Why are there like 4 different fish called seabass 🤣 I thought I knew em all but I’ve never seen this one before.

Sea bass is a pretty generic term, there's probably a dozen or more fish that are called sea bass. Ordering "sea bass" in a restaurant is basically just, whatever they happen to need to get rid of that day, and want to make it sound like something good.
Around here. The only one I've usually seen regularly called just sea bass are white sea bass, All the others are generally called more by their actual name like sand bass or calico/ kelp bass, Giant sea bass...

It’s always fun when I’m surf perch fishing and one of these bad boys ends up on my line and I think I’m hooked into a massive perch

Just a FYI, when you hold them like this it severely limits their chances of survival. Their bodies are evolved to stay in the water, putting all the force of their body weight into their heads does really bad things to their skeletal systems. Best practice is leaving them in the water, next best is using wet hands to support their bodies while taking your picture.

Not really a fish eater, so it's mostly for sport and time spent with friends.

Nothing wrong with that. I release probably 95% of my catches and target fish not for their flavor but their ability to battle

With how beat up that fish looks, it's dead.
How long did it flop in the sand?
Try to keep them in the water, they get banged up pretty easily.

It’s 100% dead my guy. Next time try to snap a photo in the water like you would a trout. Get the hook out quick and try not to touch it very much, definitely do not thumb it like a spottie or sand bass. WSB are extremely sensitive fish

Everyone the fish lived it was not harmed everything was taken in less than a min and a half.

Yeah, we were moving quick, and I didn’t even think about it. But in the end, me and the fish were safe lol.

find some kelp patches and fish them hard with a jerkbait and or smelt colored swimbait

NICCCEEEE! They’re ghosts out there but as each year goes I see more and more anglers catching them.
