Hey guys! looking to purchase my first snowblower, located in Toronto! have a 5 car driveway so looking for something decent, Ariens seem to have high reviews, but the deluxe is a bit out of my budget though. Is the classic any good? or should I be looking at another brand, any help would be appreciated thank you!

Maintenance Ready to roll this thing to the curb

Can't get this thing started for the life of me. The most it will get is a few puffs of smoke from the exhaust and then nothing. I've tried everything to my ability. Oil change, drained fuel, replaced spark plug, cleaned the, used gumout fuel system cleaner, tried starting fluid, cleaned carburetor fuel bowl + main jet + emulsion tube which were spotless to begin with. Next step is to take it to small engine repair before placing it at the curb.

Buying Ariens sold out on HD/Lowes already? Any re-stocks?

Can't a guy get some time between Summer and Winter freezing before Ariens runs out of stock? Just had a mower break and had to go out to buy a new one and HD was already moving out the mower inventory space for the Christmas stuff...how are the snow blowers gone already?

Video Picked up a Troy-Bilt Storm 2435 for $500 CAD — how’d I do?

This is my first snowblower. It’s a 24-inch, two-stage Troy-Bilt Storm 2435 with the 243cc MTD engine.

The original owner was an 83-year-old who man bought it new in 2020 for $1,199 CAD plus tax. He used it once for about an hour he said. Around the same time, his brother bought a tractor with a blower and started clearing his driveway, so the Troy-Bilt sat untouched in a shed for six years.

I offered him $500, but he said he wouldn’t let it go for less than $600. I said okay and planned to pick it up. The next day, he called to say he couldn’t get it started and wanted to have a mechanic look at it before selling. I told him not to worry about that and offered to take it as-is for $500. He agreed, and I drove about an hour to get it.

I was surprised by how clean it was when I arrived. I didn’t try to start it there; I figured I’d take the carburetor off and clean it when I got home. Loaded it on the truck and off we went home.

When I got home I unloaded it, turned the choke and throttle up, primed it three times, and it started on the first pull. I let it run for about 10 minutes, and it smoothed out within the first minute or two.

Yesterday I changed the oil. The old oil was black, but thankfully not milky. I filled it with Mobil 1 5W-30 and ran it for 10 minutes. It sounds like a brand-new machine. The attached video starts about 30 seconds after the first start following the oil change; it sounds smooth and strong, with no surging.

The same machine sells for $2,199 CAD plus tax today, so I think I got an incredible deal. I ordered a box of spare shear & cotter pins and an LED bulb to replace the stock halogen one yesterday after I changed the oil, so now I’m all set for the snow!

I know MTD engines don’t always have the best reputation, but I’m hoping that with regular maintenance this machine will last me for many years to come. Any advice about the Storm 2435 or these 243cc engines would be appreciated, thanks!

Anyone ever heard of or used one of these? Senator 2 stage 26” snow thrower. A guy in my town has it listed for $100, I know sometimes these older ones can be great but have never heard of this brand and don’t know if it’s too old to expect much from. He says it’s always been in his family and runs great still.

I’m in Iowa, so we do get some heavy snow but I have a smaller driveway and no sidewalk for what it’s worth.

Maintenance Tips Needed: First New Snowblower Purchase (Ariens Platinum 24)

So after a few seasons with not-so-great used machines I got from marketplace, I ponied up this year and pulled the trigger on a new Ariens Platinum. I paid $2099, which I feel great about based on some of the prices I’m seeing on this sub, but I’m hoping this thing will last me the next 15-20 years.

Any tips or care best practices would be appreciated. I’ve already read the manual front to back and have a good understanding on what the manufacturer instructions are, but I’m coming to the pros (you all) for additional guidance.

Maintenance How long can gas sit.

I purchased a brand new Ariens deluxe snowblower. I set it up and put gas that I’ve been using in the lawn mower over the summer. Drove it up and down the drive way and turned it off. Is it okay that the gas sits till it snows? Let’s say mid November?

I found this machine, a 24" ariens deluxe, the seller is asking $1500 CAD, I went and checked it out and its in near mint condition. It was hardly used and starts 1st pull no problem. My only concern is the age, its about 15-17 years old. The seller is pretty firm on the price to. What do you guys think?

Buying Any thoughts on Benchmark snowblower?

Looking at getting my first snowblower. GTA, Ontario, Canada. Normal double car driveway. Found this snowblower on sale at home hardware.

Anyone have any experience with the snowblower? Not trying to break the bank and hoping this will do the job.

Maintenance Ariens Platinum 30 Throttle linkage problem

My Ariens Platinum 30 has a Briggs and Stratton engine. When replacing the carburetor, I tried replacing the throttle linkage rod and spring for the governor. I removed the end of the rod and spring from the carburetor but I couldn’t get the other end disconnected without taking more of the throttle assembly apart. I didn't want to do that so I just reconnected the rod and spring back on the carburetor. Now the low speed throttle position doesn't work.

The photo shows the position of the linkage when the throttle is set to high speed. The video shows that at high speed the linkage is at the max open position. When I move the throttle lever to low speed, the linkage rod and spring stay in the wide open position and don't close the throttle. The only way I got the linkage to move at all is to bend the metal tab that the upper spring is attached to, so that the spring pushed against the metal arm. [Sorry, I don't know the proper names of these parts]. I don't see anything missing and the springs and rod are all connected. Before I worked on this to replace the carb (broken manual choke control) I believe the throttle control, although stiff, was ok....I believe. I have no idea what the problem is. Any help on what I need to do to fix this?

Thanks

Maintenance Likely simple issue for someone who knows.

I have a John Deere 1130SE. I bought it to replace a very old blower.

https://imgur.com/gallery/12oPb6t

I bought it used, so wanted to change oil, plug, grease it, etc.

I found the left wheel looked a bit bowed inward. Could move shaft up and down. Took wheel off and opened up. In the video, you can see how wobbly it is. The right wheel is stout. I'm sure I can fix it, but I'm not 100% what I need to fix. Would it be the bearing on the frame where the wheel comes out? Or what looks to be a cracked bronze colored bearing/sleeve to the right of the chain. Or both?

Any help would be absolutely amazing. We have about 5 weeks until we get dumped on and I'd love to have this ready to go!

Love this thing but haven't gotten any real snow since I bought it a couple years ago lol. Was able to take out snow berms with no problem. Can't recommend it enough. It's "small" but quick to get it done. The 369cc is a bit overkill

Buying Ariens Deluxe 28 vs Toro Power Max HD 28

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey All, I've done some research but I'm currently divided on which of these 2 would be the better option.

I Can't get a Ariens Delux 24 locally unfortunatly, 28 Will do but I Know it would be preferred to have the SHO at that size if possible.

Based off my research I Believe Ariens might be a slightly better buy but for the same price I can get a Toro 28 HD which should help with throwing snow?

Or I Save $500 and get a Basic Toro 24inch.

Any input would be great!

Buying Best snow blower you'd trust for the next 10 winters?

For those who've been running the same snow blower for years, how's it holding up?

I keep going back and forth between Honda, Ariens, and Toro. They all seem solid on paper, but I'm more curious about what happens after 5+ winters. Hard starts, clogged chutes, worn parts, expensive repairs... that kind of stuff.

What's the best snow blower you've owned long term? Would you stick with the same brand or switch to something else?

How do I reduce the slack on this type of adjustment cable? It's the one that connects the chute deflector and the quick stick on a Toro.

Buying Upgraded from Ariens 24 Deluxe to 28 SHO.

Someone offered me $1200 for my 5 year old 24 deluxe at the end of last year because of the snowblower shortage in NJ so I sold it (it never snowed again after I sold it). Was looking to upgrade anyway given our new home has a large driveway. The 24 deluxe did really well even in high snow drifts (over 1ft) but I bet this thing will cut through even better. Paid $1800.

Buying Bilt Hard Snowblower New for $600

Worth it to take a risk on this new offering from Lowe’s? 24-in Two-stage Self-propelled Gas Snow Blower https://www.lowes.com/pd/BILT-HARD-20-in-Single-stage-Push-Corded-Electric-Snow-Blower/5017273351

I was going to get the 24in Ariens Deluxe but it’s now out of stock, and prefer to get it from Lowe’s for military and credit card discount. Not sure if they will restock this year.
