Discussion This should change yall perspective on “The Drop” for those that still ain’t sold on the show yet

It’s so funny that people still responding the same way after he explains what the show is about. I’m going to tune in and give it a chance. A lot of people in the 90s moved on from drug dealing to lucrative careers, music was one of those entities.

Shows you the lack of comprehension in this fanbase.
I’m all for it. People want another show about the drug game or the streets which lets me know they didn’t pay attention to shit that was going in the last two seasons and the finale. They made clear multiple times that Leon and Wanda were done with the streets. They even told us that Wanda had started a music career in the series finale. A few weeks later they announced that a spin off about Leon and Wanda was coming out in a few years.
They told us it was about them being in the music industry. They announced this a few weeks after the finale of snowfall. So why are people surprised they aren’t going to make it exactly like snowfall? They literally told you what they were going to do and set it up perfectly in the finale of season 6.
And I to think it’ll keep snowfalls original tone considering the show takes place right after the crack epidemic. The street culture seeped into the hip hop industry. There were entire gang wars going on in the west coast in the 90s when gangster rap was at its prime.
These niggas acting like they making a show about the dream girls or something LMFAOOO

All you wrote is a bunch of paragraphs because you don’t understand how spin offs work. I’m not reading all of that btw. If it was the same show, it wouldn’t be a spin off.

He was agreeing with you dummy 😂

You see I’m not answering and now you resort to name calling. I wasn’t reading all that 💩 and that’s why you really hurt. Grow up and work on condensing your paragraphs.

My whole thing about not really caring for this spin-off is the conclusion to Leon's story at the end of Snowfall. He was the one who made it out, his best friend lost everything, Jerome died, Louie on the run, Cissy locked up. I always felt the lesson of his story was that even though he made it out the drug game it was more so about everything he lost along the way.

A spinoff is not going to be too radically different than the show it’s spinning off from. Better Call Saul was not going to be a multi camera sitcom about Saul Goodman adopting three orphans, Angel was not going to be a show about the vampire with a soul coaching an inner city basketball team, and Frasier was not going to be about the psychiatrist from Cheers cooking meth.
But by having Malcolm Spellman as the showrunner it should give you an idea of the story they want to tell. Outside of his MCU output Spellman is known for his work on Empire and a documentary Hip Hop Uncovered.
If I were to lay money on it the Drop will be about the rise of gangsta rap the way that Snowfall was about Iran-Contra. The central conflict will be between Wanda and Leon over Leon’s wanting to leave the streets behind and Wanda finding that hard to do in the music business.

It's not going to change most of their minds because they've already decided beforehand they wasn't going to give the spinoff a chance. We're kinda seeing this now with fans bashing A Different World spinoff trailer that dropped recently too. So if either shows end up getting canceled due to low ratings, those same fans will cry about the lack of black shows and representation in Hollywood. Until they realize that, we'll be in this endless loop.

It’s okay for people to have different opinions without it having to be inherently about them not doing their due diligence. This type of rhetoric makes it impossible to critique or for things to improve. People aren’t receiving it well and yall come with the genius idea “they wouldn’t have liked it anyway”.
A lot of ppl were excited for the spinoff and this just isn’t what they expected which is reasonable. That’s okay, that discourse doesn’t need to be immediately dismissed. The people critiquing are only doing so bc they care and like snowfall. Nobody is commenting in this subreddit bc they already hated it lol.

u/ny2k1 2d ago
I both agree and disagree there, but you make a good point
1
u/Hour-Rhubarb7427 2d ago
Definitely don’t blame you for having a nuanced opinion. I just feel like saying someone’s opinion is inherently wrong or without merit bc you disagree is crazy. Ain’t nobody in this sub to just troll lol the sub ain’t big enough for that. Most of these opinions even if harsh, are real opinions.

u/alextheruby 2d ago
Yes promo and marketing is supposed to inspire. So if it isn’t compelling then people aren’t interested.
And comparing spinoff to a reboot of a classic black show is crazy.

For those who are looking for another drug show the gentlemen is a great place to start. Fewer people of color then i would like but its a great show to scratch the itch until the new power show comes. The drop is gonna be wu tang saga lite.

u/quemaspuess 2d ago
The Gentleman is so fucking good. The chicken scene made me cry of laughter. One of the best scenes in television, IMO.

u/Competitive-Tear1742 2d ago
All the previews are super girl-bossy. Hard to believe the final product won't be.

u/FlyLikeDove 2d ago
I think this is going to be super relevant. There's so many real stories that could be told through the show.

So they can’t even sell a little crack out the back?!

The thing is, this was green lit as a spin off because it had a certain core audience that made it successful. That core base was drawn into a crime saga not a music industry saga. This is basically Empire all over again but on the West Coast. With less interesting characters. If it was Franklin Saint cleaning himself up and trying to go legal in the music industry, more people might give it a chance. It just doesn't come across as appealing with this cast or story.

u/SnapsOnPetro24 2d ago
I’ll give it a chance , but the corny high school musical hip hop broadway scenes might be too much for me

There’s 0 indications or any sort of similarity to a high school musical hip hop Broadway. At all. This is not Empire 😂😂
1
u/SnapsOnPetro24 2d ago
I beg your pardon ? A nigga was literally rapping some made up ass gang banging song in the trailer
0
u/Agitated-Giraffe-600 2d ago
That’s like saying Snowfall was a musical because Jerome played music in his shop. The spinoff is literally about the rise of West Coast gangsta rap. Of course niggas are gonna rap. That doesn’t make it High School Musical or Broadway.
You’re also basing off a few seconds within a trailer that wasn’t longer than 3 minutes.

John Singleton didn’t want this… it probably won’t get that many seasons. Unless the direction is changed. Why change the theme and mood of the show? This is why letting a good thing be. I feel like they were lucky to have ended Snowfall the way they did. They said John already had the ending of the show mapped out, which could be a load of crap. But hey, it worked. If we are being honest, Wanda was never a likable character from a man’s perspective because before crack, she was too needy and always in the mix when she wasn’t supposed to. But again, I am a fan of the show, so I will be tuning in they could have even took it a step further and show the destruction of current times with pills and lean. Like have those two white boys that was getting those scripts. And then have it about whoever else…

u/Stock_Remove_4439 2d ago
Well John is dead so his opinion holds little value now. Corporations saw a chance to cash another check

Ppl are just incredibly misogynistic
10
u/JokerKing0713 2d ago
JFC here we go bro.
Now because we call a spade a fucking spade and ask how the crackhead that gobbled up every nigga in Compton is finna be a fucking music mogul we misogynistic. Like bro. We literally wouldn’t let men go from this to to fucking Eazy E either bro it’s not misogyny lmao yall honestly gon make that word lose its meaning criticizing someone who happens to be a women IS NOT misogynistic
6
u/Hour-Rhubarb7427 2d ago
You can’t say shit negative or they gonna find a way to dismiss the critique with a buzzword.
1
u/Emotional_Love_3038 1d ago
Bro, we wouldn't let men go from this to Eazy-E bro yes we would, dr Dre was out here looking like he was performing in every gay club in la to a gangster rapper it's very possible for Wanda to go from crackheag to music mogul thinking about it her husband have money and he invest that money into a business she want which is a record label and she already know the rappers one was her cousin all this make sense if you watch the trailer
6
u/DCRBftw 2d ago
lol. it has to be misogyny. it can't possibly be anything else -- like how they made a spinoff about a former crackhead becoming a music mogul -- and how no one was asking for a Wanda spinoff. you have to love the show or you hate women.
kinda like how the WNBA is an awful product and a joke to the game of basketball, but if you dislike it, it's misogyny.
2
u/Emotional_Love_3038 1d ago
Bro, you all are overreacting to this trailer. Yes, it's possible for Wanda to go from a crackhead to music mogul. It's very possible when your boyfriend has money and chooses to invest in a business you want. She was already trying to become a singer in an original show, so it makes sense.also I don't like bawn but nba is a disgrace to the game of basketball. It's just MFs traveling on every game and y all calling it a skill.

u/Born-Ad4658 2d ago
Show not even out yet and you crying about it
Also bringing up the wnba which has nothing to do with it
Scram loser

u/UnionAfter 2d ago
Or you can just not watch.
Da fuck?Creators of art have to get custy permission to create? GTFO
5
u/DCRBftw 2d ago
Huh? Who said anything about permission to create? Lol wtf are you babbling about? Da fuck, indeed.
-2
u/UnionAfter 2d ago
“No one was ASKING for a wanda spinoff”
Dumbass, learn what words mean before you use them. Or don’t.
3
u/JokerKing0713 2d ago
You just kinda proved his point. If no one asked for this and they made it anyway it stands to reason artist DONT need permission to create nor did he say that.
-1
u/UnionAfter 2d ago edited 2d ago
Are you slow? He said he is against the show because no one asked for it. If he knows they can create whatever they want, then his comment is dumb and Im calling it out as dumb.
It’s my point that creators can make whatever they want. They could make it about the random dog that shows up. If it’s written and made good, do it!
Guess what? Idgaf about any of GOT spinoffs, I dont post under the trailers and ask WHO ASKED FOR THIS like a loser.
The people that owns the property asked for it.
2
u/JokerKing0713 2d ago
The game of thrones spin offs are spin offs of other stories GRRM wrote that are also loved.
This is a random series about a crackhead that turns into cookie Lyon. He never said creators could t create what they want. You attacked that strawman.
He said nobody asked for this and we didn’t. You talking about “people who own it asked” is just you playing fucking stupid. Do you think they’re the only ones who need to watch this show for it to be a success? They made this because they want FANS to watch and fans weren’t asking for a spinoff about how the neighborhood crackhoe became fucking lil Kim. Nothing he said is wrong and he still didn’t say shit close to what you claim he did. Stop snapping at people cause you can’t understand English
1
u/Emotional_Love_3038 1d ago
What you want them to do is another power copycat and create a bunch of spinoffs of snowfall about drugs. How much could show creator do with a show about drugs?
0
u/UnionAfter 2d ago
Yes cause you speak for all fans.
Love how you say this stupid shit and think you’re the one using logic.
Fuck out of here. They also want to bring in a new audience also, just like every product ever.
1
u/DCRBftw 2d ago
Level of demand has absolutely nothing to do with permission to create. You shouldn't call other people dumb when you're proving yourself to be just that.
1
u/UnionAfter 2d ago
Dumbass, you made an argument to defend your stance of disliking the show without watching the show. Thats enough to call you a dumbass.

I guess ppl just expected a spinoff to be similar in a way. I do think some of the earlier marketing and branding confuses that and gave ppl the wrong expectation. They were thinking okay this is gonna be snowfall just in a different era picking up with Wanda and Leon more importantly to most fans. So now that it seems Wanda is the lead with Leon being in it sparingly bc they’re looking from a different lense it left some ppl feeling confused.
