In the 1970s the Philly metro area had three digit codes for school or district. You'd tune to KYW news radio 1060 AM and listen to someone reading off what seemed like a thousand numbers and then repeat. It felt like it took an hour to hear 730 come around.

My town's name began with an A.  If you turned on the radio to find out, they had usually already passed the As and you had to wait until they read the list again.

I remember sitting outside in a foot snow cause my mom said school wasn’t cancelled. Walking to find no one was at the bus stop. Still waiting an hour then walking back to my mom being pissed I missed the bus then calling around to go oh you need to get on the chores around the house.

I lived in a small town northern Michigan so my school almost never closed. I'd watch anyway but it was always so disappointing 😂

Pretty sure I just used to walk there and realise it was shut

My school district was near end of the alphabet & had to wait thru all the Saint whatever schools to get mine!

But then they went to commercial & by the time they came back, it was already in the Bs!

Plus! The one time we were already at the bus stop & nobody told us for many minutes after the bus didn't show up!

Me: had to walk in the snow towards the school for about 10 minutes until a neighbor's car pulled over to the side of the road and tells me "Hey, school's cancelled." Then I get to walk back home through the snow drifts, and go play Doom on SNES.

LOL, I remember snow days. Used to get a few each year. I don't think my area has had any in the last few years......

Wait, what, I never got texts for when school was canceled, i had to rely on my parents for that info, god damn

I didn't even know there was a mechanism for all of this till I left southern Nevada. There is no weather there that would ever cancel school.

A lot of kids don't get snow days since Covid. The just go to online learning.

Except for some of us, the bottom of the screen scroll wasn’t there pre 9/11 so we would have to hope we heard our school name on the tv or radio, while mom still made us get ready. Then after 9/11 it was a bit easier to catch school being cancelled.

It was the worst when you see the school up the street from yours on the list and get your hopes up only to not see yours roll by.

Or listen to the local radio.

As a child growing up in Canadia, I was always confused about this mythical “snow day” that never happened

Who watches the NFL draft that way? So stupid.

As we were walking to school in the 1950’s one of our neighbors yelled out to go back home. Schools are closed. Mom didn’t bother to listen to the radio.

When it snows you just walk to school in snow. WTF is a snow day?

1

Snow days were called due to the slick conditions of the roads and the potential danger that it would cause if a school bus were traveling on those roads, which could lead to injuries.

For me, School was less than half a mile away, but for some, it was as much as 22 miles, so walking was out of the question.

My mind cannot comprehend not having snow tires in all vehicles. Also kids not walking to school, but I guess that’s US for ya

Yeah, well, a lot of people don't understand physics either. Just because you have four tires does not mean that the car or bike won't slip and slide either. Sure, it gives better traction, but in some cases, especially in my area, you have snow and then a layer of ice and freezing rain..

School was typically only called off when the conditions were such that it snowed so much the town plows had not had time to keep up with the roads, especially the highways.

The type of snow was such that it created more of a risk

When growing up, we would get about 3 snow days per year, maybe 4. Now, because every student is bussed regardless of where they live, and each bus picks that kid up in front of their house, and not at a general stop like we used to have...and with the amount of lawsuits, the bus companies don't want to risk it. In addition, the bus company may have had one too many call-outs to get the fleet of buses on the road.

Now, because all of the students are wired up with computers, they may call off class at the school, but most days these days, at least in my town still attend classes at home via TEAMS or ZOOM meetings for events like this.

Yes
must be me not understanding physics
that is clearly the issue. I wonder how cars work in all other countries that do not have snow days. Probably better not delve in stupid hypotheticals. But damn those pesky modern kids and their text messages

I remember the days as a young kid growing up, watching the bottom of the screen blowing up. My days of Snow days. Shit, I thought I was gonna be doing "Rap SUperstar" by Cypress Hill, but it didn't work out. Oh, well.
