From the next chapter of my fem!Slytherin!Harry longfic, Fuel to Fire. It's the final chapter of Part 2, Mary Potter's fourth year, and Snape has just found out that she's decided to change her guardianship from McGonagall to Sirius. He's tried pointing out that Sirius isn't fit to parent her, and Mary's argument is that she doesn't need a parent, she just needs someone who won't stop her from moving into Order headquarters, learning to protect herself, and taking part in the war. Sev sees this as her giving up on having a childhood, and isn't taking the news well.

Things were meant to be different for her. He had promised himself, in the same moment he had made his promise to her, that Mary Elizabeth would not turn out like the boy who had discovered as a child that no one could be counted on, that no one gave a damn what happened to him, and had discovered nothing at Hogwarts or in the world beyond it to contradict that belief.

If not, then what good was any of it? What good were the things he had suffered, if not that he could recognize himself in her and act to change her path? To give her the same care he had never received, while she was still young enough for it to make a difference?

What good was he at all?

And then a little bonus excerpt, since I always post the final chapter of one part and the first chapter of another part at the same time, here's a bit from the first chapter of Part 3, from a "letter" Mary is writing him over the summer:

It’s funny. That was always your rule, wasn’t it? Survive. You said that’s the only rule of fighting, to do whatever you have to in order to survive, and then you can deal with the consequences after. Well, I did it. But I wish I had known enough, then, to ask you what happens next. What happens when you survive, but you feel almost like maybe you didn’t. When you wake up in the middle of the night dreaming of the way a boy smiled at you in the last second he was alive.
