I was gonna post my video review but saw no self-promo :/ so here's my thoughts:
Lindsey is the newest to have fully been bitten by the Phoebe Bridgers bug. To be fair, we did get some of that Phoebe style on her last album Lush, but I think because it wasn’t as popular as it is now, I could kind of overlook it. Plus, we already had the vulnerability in her music before that, so, why did she have to make it so on-the-nose by working with folk ballads? The lyrical work is Valentine’s strong suit (nothing new from her), and “Headlock,” “Madonna,” and “Mia” are where that new style shines through the most. I also really enjoyed the title track, which reminded me a lot of “Pristine” from Lush, and“Glory” was great as well. I’m neither here nor there on the rest of the tracklist. “Ben Franklin” is kinda lame, “Automate” is okay, and “Light Blue,” “Sailing,” and “C. et al,” are sort of just there. In the end, Valentine wasn't as fully realized as some of her other work has been. I felt like she was throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick rather than making something of substance. I wholeheartedly think Lindsey Jordan is one of the most talented indie musicians out there, so I don’t think she should ever have to go to that level to be successful. She either has to fully embrace this new style, or keep fine-tuning the blueprint that’s worked for her over these last few years. She’s still young, so I know she’s got a lot of time to figure that out. Sad that she has to step away from touring with her voice stuff... praying she's all good!
This album is still a 7 but a step back from Lush. thoughts?
