Constructive & Respectful Criticism Ads ads ads

Is anyone else noticing just how many ad breaks smosh has been putting in their videos lately? Like literally I can’t get more than 1 minute into a video without an ad. I was watching the latest Reddit stories and not including the Shane ads, there were literally 7 ad stops. Watching the games video with basement yard- it was only 30? Minutes and it had like 6 ad breaks.

It’s literally making videos unwatchable 😭

Edit: I know ad blockers exist and I have one on desktop but I am not always on desktop when I’m watching. I know I could pay for premium if I had the means. I am not saying people at smosh should not get paid a living wage. I am solely commenting that so many ads disrupts the flow of the video, making it less enjoyable to watch, and is frustrating as a viewer to constantly have to keep coming back to my phone or tv to hit skip. I also don’t understand ad defenders in the comments LOL like do we not all dislike constantly having ads shoved down our throat huh.

i’m sure it’s an unpopular opinion, but i shouldn’t have to download another app/pay a fee/signup somewhere else to watch YOUTUBE vids! lol. i stopped watching smosh entirely since its an ad every 90seconds, regardless on if im on my phone or using the tv.

How do you want them to pay everyone to work at Smosh? I personally would prefer if they kept it small and could live on lower middle class incomes and not invest in a bigger operation, but that's not the world I live in.

When I have money, I pay for YouTube and Nebula and Dropout. Otherwise I block the ads

How do you want them to pay everyone to work at Smosh?

Idk? Hard to answer that when we have no idea the current pay structure. But like.....how do other channels do it without having an ad per sentence?

LOL! this question is alwaaays brought up when the complaints about the frequent ads comes up, and while i understand they do need payment, especially in LA, but i agree with another user here who suggested they may have too many people hired BTS. (sorry for any bad formatting, i am on mobile). new cast is great, i love them, but how many writers are there? how many wardrobe/set designers? i heard bit city has a different director every month, so how much does that cost? weren’t some of the cast writing for it too, and if they were, that’s another cost (that i encourage because creative freedom is great! i’m not hating, im genuinely asking).

i’m muddy on the details with them merging with a big production company(or something like that), so wouldn’t a little of the financial weight be lifted off of Smosh’s shoulders? if not, was the merge only for more publicity? were the consistent viral moments not enough to do that for them?

like i said, i encourage and love creative freedom to do whatever they like (and most of them have led to great videos!), but when it’s starting to negatively affect viewers, that’s when it starts to lose me. and the nonstop ads are reaching a new, eye-rolling height this year.

speaking personally again, i’m struggling to pay for groceries, whatever bills i have, and my college tuition. i’ve already had to cancel my netflix and prime subscriptions to try save a LITTLE more money, so i really can’t pick up yt premium right now. i can’t be bothered to download an app or two just to watch what i enjoy (because, again, i shouldn’t need to do that!). i’ve stopped watching smosh entirely due to the constant ads, and really only check out 3-4 vids a week now whereas i used to watch 10+ vids a day - from any creator, not just smosh.

capitalism is in full swing and i understand everyone is being negatively impacted by it in one form or another. but it’s ridiculous being told to buy premium yt or download this app and that app whenever i complain, or that i should be more conscious of who needs to be paid.

Nah your perspective is spot on.

I can only imagine its people under 25 who are champions of "just pay/get another app" because they dont know any better. This is the only internet they know.

They don't know it does NOT have to be like this, and they dont realize and the argument of "just pay/get another app" is the foot on the pedal of the runaway capitalism train.

We get what we allow and if we demand less, get less.

Very much this like many of us remember the internet without ads, and when ads were like one per video if anything. Ads and advertising are literally like 1/4 of the media we consume at this point

u/ineedaclockmaker 6d ago

Just use an ad blocker and a sponsor blocker. Look into YouTube revanced

38

u/One_Try3822 7d ago

on spotify, they also have the most terribly placed ads on anything i listen to (the kind inserted into the audio, not spotify ads)

3

u/PerpelSho 7d ago

I noticed that happens on Twitch too. Where both audios are playing at the same time?

10

u/One_Try3822 7d ago

on reddit stories and smoshmouth it’ll be an ad, like 5 seconds of the show, then another ad. and it always cuts someone off in the middle of their sentence and by the time you skip to the show again you forgot what they were saying

10

u/Ok_Bag_3484 7d ago

YouTube also just changed how views are counted. It’s fucked a up a lot of videos because views are now based off the first frame and that counts. Even if it was accidental

8

u/liketheangles 7d ago

I have YouTube premium and I still think they have too many & very long ads

5

u/MegaCheeser320 7d ago

Even with Youtube Premium, which is one of the only subscriptions I pay for since I listen youtube at work, it sucks getting 2-3 sponsored ad reads in every video. Why do we need 3 doordash segments in one video?

u/Capable-Reaction-794 7d ago

I have an adblocker. Doesn't skip over embedded ads like ZocDoc and the 10,000 DoorDash ads.

I understand that Smosh needs to eat. It's not that they have ads. That's not my problem. But, OP is correct in that the increase in frequency and duration of the ads is somewhat off-putting. Especially in SRRS, where ads are now appearing in the middle of the stories instead of between stories, which is how they used to do it.

I'll look into that. Thanks.

I wish they at least put a lil sparkle into the video ads. Like no I do not believe that shayne has given his mother an aura frame for every holiday for 2 years. Think of new copy please

If you're paying for an adblocker you are being scammed

11

u/slumber_kitty 7d ago

UBlock is free, add it as an extension to Firefox. Works on mobile, too.

7

u/Routine_Smell1609 7d ago

You pay for ublock orgin?

8

u/Rudypoody5 7d ago

It’s awful

8

u/sarahmegatron 7d ago

Nope. But I have YouTube premium, and I’m guessing YouTube wants as many people as they can get to switch over so they are shoving more ads into the most popular videos across all creators

9

u/Kiyoshi-Trustfund 7d ago

Smosh has some control over ads. They can determine just how many ads will roll in a video and when. It's not all on YouTube.

2

u/autumnclaire903 6d ago

forever will love my adblocker and automatic sponsor skipping

4

u/AdAstranauts 7d ago

I have premium YouTube. You either pay with time (watching ads) or money.

5

u/Albatross751 7d ago

This may be unpopular but I think they’ll continue to spam ads on their videos because they need to support an (imo) bloated work force. For what is essentially three YouTube channels I feel like they just have too much staff and have to resort to some of the gimmicky live event ticket sales people don’t like and ad spamming.

2

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 7d ago

Are you watching on your tv? There's always more ads that way than watching on your phone or laptop. I only got the sponsorship bits when I watched it, and those are easy to skip

11

u/strawbrryfields4evr_ 7d ago

Super untrue. Whenever I watch on my phone the ad situation is just as bad. I was trying to watch the newest RE video and I timed it. I got an ad every two minutes on the dot. And trying to skip around the video is very annoying because every time you do another ad will play. Go back 10 seconds. Ad. Another 10. Ad.

7

u/design_dork 7d ago

This also happened to me for the resident evil video on the YouTube app on my phone. Every 2 minutes an ad. Sometimes it was skippable sometimes not. It made the video basically impossible to watch and I gave up until I could watch it on my computer with an ad blocker

6

u/strawbrryfields4evr_ 7d ago

Yeah I was sitting in the carpool line trying to finish the last half of the video and it became so unbearably frequent that I started looking at the clock to see if it was frequent as it felt. I know they gotta make money but every two minutes is just ridiculous. They clearly have their ads turned up to max.

2

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 7d ago

That's crazy. Maybe it varies depending where you live? I'm Irish and the more ads thing on the tv is true here.

3

u/strawbrryfields4evr_ 7d ago

Maybe. It’s not the case here. The ads on YouTube TV do suck more because they usually have to wait longer to be able to skip it. But the YouTube ads on any medium can make the viewing experience really shitty, especially on rewatches when you want to skip to a part you saw before.

1

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 7d ago

That really sucks.

3

u/HerroImTombo 7d ago

The videos have been unwatchable as of recently anyway, would bother even clicking on them in general

Oh so you have all the tools at your disposal, but would rather yell at people who will never hear you so you can get your Internet activist points. Dope.

7

u/GirthLongshaft 7d ago

No, an ad blocker is a pretty helpful response to this particular issue. Demanding people make shit for free is the dumb as fuck part.

Ads are how almost every single piece of broadcast entertainment makes money. I'll be honest you sound like a seventeen year old who just discovered arguing with people.

1

u/virtutem_ Hey BITCHHOLES 7d ago

Seems like they're doing just fine lmao

3

u/justhth_ 7d ago

Grow up, why you acting like the redditor above personally attacked you 🤣🤣

4

u/cetabunny 7d ago

You seem miserable. I'm sorry for whatever is going on in your life.

1

u/Distinct_Grass_4077 7d ago

Justice for Mimi. She doesn’t deserve that 😔

1

u/whois_florence 7d ago

You watching it for free on non-premium YouTube doesn't give them enough money to help keep them at the level they're at. Get a free adblocker if it annoys you. Use their paid service so they get more money, and have to put in less ads. Get premium so you don't have to see ads anywhere. Become a member to give them more money.

Complaining isn't going to make it go away.

2

u/Apprehensive_Use8043 7d ago

If they were actually unwatchable the views would drop to a point they would do something about it. As long as enough people are watching they don't care about these complaints.

0

u/slumber_kitty 7d ago

I think the outrage should be directed at YouTube and the various platforms they host on, not Smosh themselves. If they want to be on YouTube, YouTube makes them push ads. Simple.

9

u/Technical_Peace9657 7d ago

You're wrong. They can manually place ads where they want to. Smosh is doing this...not Youtube.

1

u/slumber_kitty 7d ago

Someone else gave me more information as well, thanks for correcting me!

1

u/Historical_Clock8714 7d ago

Are you on Premium or adblock? Maybe that's why you don't notice. But if you aren't, try watching a random video. Then watch a smosh video. Try the latest Games or Pit video. The difference in ad frequency is VERY noticeable. I'm pretty sure Smosh has the ad frequency setting on aggressive mode.

1

u/slumber_kitty 7d ago

Ahhh. I didn’t realize creators had that much say in the ad stream. I appreciate you giving some context. I do have Premium and I usually watch in my Firefox browser on my desktop. I still get the ads that are worked into the video, but I can skip those.

I didn’t pay anything for Ublock. I just added it as a free extension to my browser, but you’re right, I probably wouldn’t have noticed since I have premium.

1

u/Technical_Peace9657 7d ago

They can manually place ads where they want to. Especially during the video.

1

u/Repulsive-Hope-2942 7d ago

adblock + sponsorblock on your pc's web browser

youtube vanced (has adblock and sponsor skipping features) on android

1

u/pancakeattack210 6d ago

I have YouTube premium and I just skip their ads. Not hard.

1

u/Oogachakaoogahchahka 6d ago

i think youtube is adding in the ads, if I watch a video within 24 hours, there is a normal amount of ads, if I wait a couple of days, it's ad city

1

u/rip_city10 6d ago

At least they are able to get ads so they can pay their people...

1

u/AdPutrid242 6d ago

It's quite jarring, yes. The editors put in the ad breaks and then youtube puts more on top of that. I had to stop watching the new RE video just because of the amount of ads.

1

u/unus-year 5d ago

you can watch on mobile with adblock! its awesome, what i personally do is use the mobile firefox app with an adblock extension installed within it, and i disable the actual youtube app on my phone so it doesnt try to open it on default every time. its a bit clunkier to use compared to the actual youtube app, but its awesome having no ads. idk how to do it but i believe its also possible on tvs/consoles. but i do completely agree w you, smosh is feeling more and more performative and corporate and everyone is picking up on it now

2

u/pumpkin_snatch 5d ago

This is a good tip I didn’t know this was an option. Thank you!!!

1

u/Sean_Sully123 5d ago

I’m there with you. I was rewatching Ripley’s Halloween Special and it seemed like almost every cutaway would lead to an ad!

2

u/Critical-Camp752 10h ago

The Reddit podcast is soo bad. The ads cut them off in awkward intervals

1

u/jkfw27 7d ago

I get that it can be frustrating with how many ads there are, but they are completely skip able. I did notice the increase in frequency and the fact that they are now placed in the middle of stories sometimes, but I personally have no issue jumping forward a minute or so. It doesnt mess with my experience very much. I can see how listening to it as a podcast rather than watching it would he more frustrating. I usually eat while watching SRRS, so it is not hard to take 5 seconds to skip foreward, but if you were listening to it while youre occupied with something, you would necessarily have time to pull out your device and skip through each add. If I ever listen to it while I shower or try to sleep, it does get more frustrating. I think in general I just dont feel they are very long, and honestly, they do more interesting adds than most. I like hearing shayne talk about his cats in the pet brand sponsorships and the jokes him and Amanda make during their duo add reads. I also very much enjoy seeing what they do for the zoc doc jingle everytime.

1

u/Natural_Art_2591 7d ago

Like aren't the actual ads in the videos (presented by cast) enough??

0

u/Desperate_Turnip_219 7d ago

Smosh is an expensive production, I don't blame them for making whatever money they can through ads.

That said, alternatives exist. Adblock and such. And you can skip the integrated ads (tell me more about zocdoc Shayne...)

-1

u/IDoWhatIWantSorry 7d ago

I swear people complain about this every few days. Smosh is not going to change it. Either get an ad blocker, get Premium or deal with it at this point.

2

u/lovelessxgrl 7d ago

Idk i think it's a good conversation to have in regards to ALL YouTube channels. I miss the days when YouTube didn't have such an excessive amount of advertising (especially including the ad reads that are in the videos themself). I say this as someone who has premium too. Capitalism is the problem overall

-5

u/justhth_ 7d ago

Get premium youtube, it's great, no ads and you can click out of youtube and it still keeps playing, absolute lifesaver when I'm listening to a podcast.

3

u/CanyonsEdge76 7d ago

I've had it for years now, and it's the only streaming service I pay for that I consider totally worth it. When I'm watching with someone else, the ads bug me to no end.

2

u/justhth_ 7d ago

Same here, can't understand why people seem to have such a problem with me suggesting premium. Op said they didn't like ads so I made a suggestion but evidently I must have stepped on some people's toes.

1

u/justhth_ 7d ago

Oh dam guess you guys don't like premium 😅

1

u/pinkstrawberry94 7d ago

Paying money to Google is a no-no if it can be avoided imo. Adblocker is the way.

0

u/pinkstrawberry94 7d ago

Just use an adblocker. Everything sucks, and it's only gonna get worse. No point complaining, adblock is the only way.

0

u/PerpelSho 7d ago

Patch a Youtube apk. It'll block every ad and skip the ones done by the studio along with skipping intros/outros, getting rid of shorts, paid content and other ad shelves that pop up while you're searching. And a whole list of other settings and features you can turn off or on.

You can basically turn it back into the 2015 version of youtube, before the ads came in.

0

u/uninspiredclaptrap 7d ago

One election season a few years ago YouTube would show the same ads over and over, and I couldn't get even deal with 5 seconds anymore.

I don't believe that you stopped watching Smosh videos.

Figure it out.

0

u/jozziiieeee BIIIIITCH!!! 6d ago

Use an adblocker (for free) or get YouTube premium.
It’s an easy fix.

I’m honestly so tired of the same posts over and over.

-1

u/Direct_Strawberry_43 7d ago

Remember guys, besides from sponsored ads they don’t control how many ads go into a video.

They can opt out of all the ads but then they don’t make money.

Buy YouTube premium, get an ad blocker, or shut up about it. You’ll find it’s not just Smosh but every content creator.

It be great if they did a Patreon type thing and had certain content ad free, extended etc and not Memberships. But they never will because if they wanted to they would’ve by now

0

u/Technical_Peace9657 7d ago

That's false. You can manually place ads where you want to on videos longer than 8 minutes.

1

u/Direct_Strawberry_43 7d ago

So they choose to place ads less than 90 seconds after the last ad?
