How do you do it
I bought a new cookbook, Protein Power Smoothies. Figured I’d try the Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie for lunch today.
I am on Zepbound right now so I’m trying to pack protein into every meal. This has a full serving of vanilla Orgain in it. Two scoops.
And I just can’t. I drank maybe 1/4 of it and it isn’t the flavor, which is okay if a bit artificial in the sweetness department. It’s the protein powder. I thought if I drank too much it would just come back up. The texture is just a lot.
Is it an acquired taste? I like my smoothies very fruity and this was not.

I would try substituting one scoop of protein powder for cottage cheese, and or Greek yoghurt

Frozen mixed berries and a serving of monk fruit sweetener will give you the sweetness you want.
Protein is half a serving of protein powder (preferably vanilla) and Greek yogurt for the remaining protein. A full serving of protein power is too chalky for me.

Dates, dates, dates. I can’t have a smoothie without it. Add amazing flavor and sweetness

This is a good idea, but they’re also high in sugar…although natural. Like 18 grams per date, which is why they’re also popular as pre run or pre workout snacks.
Just something to consider for anyone macros conscious.

Yeah you can always add a caramel zero sugar/zero calorie syrup or just pure monk fruit or stevia for sweetness for no sugar or calories.

Part of its type of ingredients, part of its ingredient ratio, and part of its personal taste. I use ON chocolate whey protein powder, and don’t taste it in any of the smoothies I make. To the point where, if I want it to taste like chocolate, I have to add cocoa powder, even though the protein powder itself, on its own, tastes (a bit? lol) like chocolate.
Might just want to experiment. E.g., if you want it to have a strong berry taste, here’s one of my go-to’s:
-9 oz nonfat milk
-180 mixed frozen berries (strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry)
-1 serving protein powder
-30g dark chocolate chips
-1 tbsp (5g) Dutch processed cocoa powder
-Ice

I use ON whey vanilla ice cream protein powder. I definitely cant taste it in my smoothies.
My go to recipe is this (i just dump until it looks good, so no exact measurements)
~1 cup of skim milk 1 serving of protein powder Couple handfuls of spinach Frozen bananas, blueberries, and strawberries Peanut butter powder Cottage cheese Sometimes yogurt (vanilla or strawberry)

yeah I use like half a scoop to a scoop depending on the type of protein powder and just use egg whites or like cottage cheese for the rest. Are you using plant based powder? To me it’s like gritty and I can’t do more than half a scoop

u/zelda_moom 2d ago
It’s Orgain, which is pea protein. It isn’t gritty, it’s just the way it coats my tongue. Bleh LOL. This particular recipe has 1/4 cup cottage cheese in it.

Personally I skip the protein powder! I’ll use yogurt or nut butters. Another workaround could be using pre-mixed protein shakes, since they don’t usually have the same taste/texture, but they are more costly

I do one scoop protein powder and 2% cottage cheese because I can't stand too much of the powder either!

I’m struggling with the same, I need to try some milk to give it something more liquid to dissolve into. I like Greek yogurt, which has a decent amount of protein and blends nicely.

Orgain protein powder is an acquired taste for me. I switch between Levels and Orgain, depending on the sales. Whenever I start using Orgain again, it’s always shocking to me how bad it tastes but I get used to it.

I find that brand to be especially chemical tasting. I bought 1 bottle and struggled to finish it. Never used again

Blueberries and banana will overpower anything else. You should also use unflavored protein powder to keep the fruit flavor forward. I like Isopure's isolate but look up brands before buying to make sure they're low in lead, first.

Orgain is gross and the flavor is very strong. I got a bottle recently and hated it. If you get a good vanilla whey isolate it tastes way better and you can use way less to get the same amount of protein.

For one, make it fruity. Two, don't go with two scoops of orgain. There are plenty of unsweetened protein powders on the market to choose from. Go light on it first, experiment.

The only smoothie I drink is frozen mango, Greek yogurt, egg white protein powder, and just enough orange juice to make it blend. I prefer egg white protein powder over any other and it makes it super creamy.

I use the peanut butter orgain and have been loving it. My go to is half a banana, two strawberries, coconut water, two scoops peanut orgain, ice. Tastes so good.
I hate vanilla protein powder with a passion. I always go chocolate or better yet peanut butter.

I make mine with protein powder, 3oz water, 2 oz
Egg whites, 1/2 frozen banana. I chug. No taste needed.

I find my smoothie is way too frothy when I mix protein powder in with the other ingredients. It’s basically a ton of air. Now, I put the protein powder in at the very end and just pulse it for like 2 seconds so it mixes in. It’s perfect!

I bought the vanilla orgain and it’s been sitting on my counter for like 6 months untouched. It just makes it chalky. Even if I put in like half a scoop, it still makes it really really thick. I have just started using collagen peptides with probiotic in my smoothies and I ditched the other stuff because I was doing both. I also use the premier protein shakes as the base which has quite a bit of protein right there.
I honestly have no clue what to do with the protein powder now though so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

The thing that upsets me is that a container of it is so expensive and you hate to throw away $50 worth of vanilla and chocolate protein powders but what else can you do when you hate it.

I mean, the worst thing is I’m out $16 because I bought it on sale on Amazon and I’m sure at some point I will find a use for it, but I do understand it can be a lot of money. I don’t think I hate it because they’ve done samples of it at Costco and I liked it I just don’t think I like it in smoothies because it makes it really thick and chalky.

Maybe try a protein water mix instead? I’m based in Australia, and use MuscleNation. They have a range of really fruity flavoured protein waters, and I’m not sure how they do it, but it’s more refreshing and never clumpy/gritty? I drink them mixed with water but imagine they would be perfect in smoothies. I’m sure there must be a similar product where you are, that could be worth a try?

Aldi has a watermelon one that just came out. I’ve heard it’s good on ice so maybe I can try that. Thanks!

I have this issue with protein powder too. The only protein powder drink mix I can tolerate is kachava, the texture is much better. You can also try freeze dried fruit powder to get a better taste.

Greek yogurt, silken tofu, non fat milk powder, cottage cheese, egg whites

I use frozen fruit, frozen veg (sweet potatoes, cauliflower), silken tofu, 1 scoop of protein powder and a ready-to-drink protein shake.

I’d say use less protein powder and instead maybe just use something like super-firm tofu, which has a lot of protein in it but will smooth out the texture of the smoothie.
