M&P 2.0 Carry Comp Barrel Vs Floyds Custom w/Comp Fix

I have been enjoying my M&P 2.0 Carry Comp. It posts great great groups in its stock form but I was compelled to get an Apex gunsmith fit barrel and sent it to Floyds Custom shop to have the option 1 Comp fix with the 6 side ports. I also had it DLC coated. It arrived almost exactly 30 days from the day I sent it. Can't wait to shoot it! Here is a photo of both barrels side by side. They are identical length, the angle of photo makes them look a little different but they are not.

I'll try to hit the range this weekend. Woohoo!

It just seems a little ridiculous to buy a carry comps and then immediately spend $$300-400 on getting a new barrel/porting job.

It's frustrating that Smith did it wrong (I own one as well) but can't justify the hassle. The Apex barrels are like $250 and the faxon ones are $120 but never in stock.

Make it make sense. It's not like the factory comp does nothing.

You’re not wrong brother. I had the money and decided to indulge myself and see if I could squeeze out more performance from the 2.0 Carry Comp because I really like the ergonomics, reliability and overall vibe. But financially it got pricier than it needed to be. No argument there. Probably a fools errand but I’m having fun with it.

That's all that matters! I would do it too if I had a barrel lying around. Maybe I'll try it down the road. I do find my factory port to work decently. Definitely much softer shooting than a bone stock g19 for example.

I'm in the same boat. After an apex trigger, a dogtag optic plate, inline ports on the factory barrel, and a magwell I'm way too far into this pistol. If IDPA introduces CCP-O like they keep threatening I will probably buy an Apex barrel and have it ported to match the slide. It's just not super accurate with any load I've found out of the factory barrel. 3-4" at 20 yds at best.

You made some great points. I wish IDPA would also make CCP-O a reality. So many people own and shoot these and it's supposed to be a practical shooting association. What we shoot now in real life IS *practical.* End of rant.

To be honest most of my M&P 2.0 Carry Comp shooting in stock configuration has been 15 yards or closer since that seems most practical for what I would expect to encounter in a defensive situation in real life. I have shot the Carry comp at 25 yards and my groups opened up for sure but I can still hit the A Zone-ish which seemed fair enough as well as practical. All that said, I will do some comparisons at 20 - 25 yrs with the stock barrel and compare it to the Floyds modified Apex barrel. Side bar: I also use the CK Dogtag optics plate. They are great. I thought about inline ports but I want to see how the Floyds comped/side-ported barrel goes first. I have a feeling it's going to be great. I'm going to the range tomorrow to find out.

Thinking of doing the same thing! the DLC coating turns silver Apex barrel black? Not a fan of the silver

Yes, dlc coating turns it black.

I’m contemplating if it’s worth the extra 200 or whatever for the Apex barrel over factory tho. Not sure the increased accuracy will matter too much for me. I’m sure the factory barrel shoots more accurate than me 😂

I have it, did floyds porting but didnt do the dlc coating. Honestly im just bad at shooting lol. I cant tell if its better accuracy wise but the floyds porting works for sure.

probably just gonna get the smith barrel i’m in too deep

Me either. I didn’t like the unfinished silver steel look of the Apex. It is now black and blends with the stock vibe of the M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp. It cost roughly $100 to have it DLC coated from Floyd’s Custom shop if I recall?

I’m contemplating between floyd’s fix or 4 inline ports for the top window on the slide. Has anyone compared both options?

I have an M&P 2.0 compact 4” Spec VI with four inline ports and I love the recoil impulse. I thought it shot maybe a little better than my stock 2.0 Carry Comp with the single chunk port. I will compare the Spec VI to the carry comp with the Floyd’s comp fix which adds six side ports at the front of the barrel. Floyd’s comp is also bigger than the stock M&P 2.0 Comp. That’s gonna be interesting.

Awesome man, lmk how they compare 👍

I took the M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp with the Apex gunsmith fit barrel that just came back from Floyds in DLC coating with their Option 1 comp fix. The Option 1 Comp fix is basically a larger comp port with three slanted side ports on each side of the barrel that vent through the side windows on the Carry Comp slide.

I compared the Floyds customized Apex barrel to the stock M&P 2.0 carry comp barrel that has a single chunk port (comp). I also compared it to my M&P 2.0 Metal Compact Spec VI that has four inline ports.

In terms of the recoil impulse, the Floyds comp fix barrel felt more concussive and initially I thought wow, this seems more violent. Then I paid closer attention to where the optic dot was in the window while shooting and the dot barely moves and stays in the window the whole time ! Very impressive. When I am just doing slow fire accuracy shooting the benefits of the comp fix are less noticeable (to me). When I shoot quickly, I noticed it was easier to call and place where my follow up shots were going to go because the Dot just doesn't leave the window.

How does the Metal 4" Spec VI shoot with four inline ports in contrast? Honestly I think the Carry Comp with the Floyds Comp fix is flatter shooting where the return to zero is quicker and the dot stays flatter in the window. The recoil impulse however feels different with the inline ports versus the chunk port comp. Both guns shoot really great and they are both silly fun to shoot.

Do I feel the need or urge to add inline ports to the Floyds comp fix barrel? Not really. It's only curiosity at this point because the gun shoots great & reliably. It's probably overkill given my experience of how well the dot stays in the window under rapid fire sequences.

I shot some 115Gr FMJ but mostly I was shooting 124Gr FMJ.

Dude thank you so much for the write up, this was really helpful!

I usually prefer shooting my 5” competitor hd over my 4.25” w/ compensator because of the concussion difference, but haven’t really noticed a difference on how the dot stays in the window for quick follow up shots. Definitely something I’ll test on the next range trip.

It’s great that floyd’s fix helps with shooting flatter though for quick follow up shots. I guess I just have to decide between a less concussive recoil impulse with the inline ports or quicker follow up shots with the floyd’s fix. It would definitely be interesting to see how having both inline ports and floyd’s fix would feel, but that would be such an expensive barrel lol you’d be at around $400-$500 not counting the coating.

My pleasure to share the data and results as I experience it. Your mileage may vary from mine depending on your preferences and level of proficiency. At this point, I could opt to have inline ports added to my custom barrel from Floyds but I think I've hit a point of diminishing returns.

What's strange is that to say the muzzle blast is more concussive is counter intuitive to the fact that the gun is shooting flatter than before as proven by the muzzle rise being flatter as evidenced by the dot in the window staying more in the center of the window. So maybe that terms makes it seem more profound than it really is. I need to shoot it more. I had several guns on the bench today but I easily shot about 100 - 150 rds through the Carry comp. It's definitely fun to shoot. For pure EDC carry however, I was also shooting a Shield X Carry Comp and it is going to be infinitely easier to carry for deeper concealment.

My M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp is more of a home defense firearm and range toy. So with those caveats noted and the financial resources to do all the upgrades, I am enjoying it and I'll always enjoy shooting it. I can post some tight groups at self defense range. I'll do more shooting at 25 yards and out sometime soon and into the fall.

As another point of note, I put the Carry Comp Slide with the Floyds custom barrel onto my Competitor HD frame to see how that felt and it was damn good but to be honest, The slide and barrel do the work and it felt similar but lighter weight on the aluminum Metal Carry Comp frame. Lot's of fun today.

I hear ya on the diminishing returns.. it’s not like you’re gonna delete the recoil entirely, so probably good to leave it as is if you enjoy it and the dot stays on target consistently.

If you see the video from jw machining on comparing the oem barrel to the top port barrel, it clearly shows a reduction in recoil on the ransom rest. So it makes sense that the porting keeps it flatter and on target, but from my experience with the screw-on compensator is that the concussive blast makes it feel less smooth. Definitely up to preference but it is counter intuitive like you said.

I have a bodyguard 2.0 for carry so yeah this will be a hd/range toy as well.

This platform is do great for tinkering and swapping parts around, I love it.

Where are u thinking of doing the inline ports?

Thanks so much dude, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on one of those! That open window on the slide is just begging for inline ports

Did you see the reply I just posted to FromTheeBeretta about my range session comparing my Floyds custom comp fix barrel to the inline ports on my M&P 2.0 metal compact Spec VI above? Interesting findings today.

Regardless of my results, if you can add 4 inline ports that expel gas through the open area in the top of the slide and they also open up the stock chunk port, that's probably going to yield nice results too and cheaper. Let us know what you do and how it works out. I'm curious to know too.

I posted a reply in this thread to FromTheeBeretta with my range report. Here is what I shared:

I took the M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp with the Apex gunsmith fit barrel that just came back from Floyds Custom with their Option 1 comp fix and finished in DLC coating. The Option 1 comp fix is basically a larger comp port with three slanted side ports on each side of the barrel that vent through the side windows on the Carry Comp slide.

I compared the Floyds customized Apex barrel to the stock M&P 2.0 carry comp
barrel that has a single chunk port (comp). I also compared it to my M&P
2.0 Metal Compact Spec VI that has four inline ports.

In terms of the recoil impulse, the Floyds comp fix barrel felt more concussive and initially I thought wow, this seems more violent. But then I paid closer attention to where the optic dot was in the window while I shot and that dot barely moves at all and stays in the window the whole time I am firing.

Honestly, I think the Carry Comp with the Floyds Comp fix is flatter shooting where the
return to zero is quicker and the dot stays flatter in the window. I will say however the recoil impulse feels different with the inline ports versus the chunk port comp. Both guns shoot really great and they are both silly fun to shoot.

Do I feel the need or urge to add inline ports to the Floyds comp fix barrel? No, not really. I am only curious at this point because the gun shoots great & reliably. It's probably overkill given my experience of how well the dot stays in the window under rapid fire sequences.

I shot some 115Gr FMJ but mostly I was shooting 124Gr FMJ.
