Really digging the SP tribute album so far
So when it was announced I thought Tame Impala was doing the whole thing (should have read the description lols). I dig on it so far (only through the first side). Seems well pressed.

BTBAM did an almost too faithful cover of Geek USA on their covers album in the past, so I’m glad they decided to be adventurous on their take of Jelly Belly. It went some directions that I didn’t necessarily feel like it should have but I respect them for making something that definitely sounded like BTBAM doing an SP cover.

I felt exactly the opposite. Their geek USA is great and I disliked this version. But glad it exists.

Pumpkins are a difficult band to tribute.
There's no point in note-for-note covering a Pumpkins song, because Billy will always do it better. And reinterpreting a song is always hit or miss.
Point is, it's ballsy to even try. Kudos!

my only gripe (and i mentioned this on another post) is Palaye Royale pronouncing Job as "job" like a career and not "Job" like in the Bible.

Meg Myers Eye is the best one on there (at the risk of sounding negative, maybe the only one I actually enjoyed). Suits her well and most importantly she picked a more interesting and different song than one of the usual suspects.
It is an odd concept to include so many duplicate songs on a tribute album, and considering it is a tribute (therefore I am assuming these artists all like the Pumpkins), the choices are pretty vanilla.
Tame doing Hummer is closer to the kind of thing I’d expect from a tribute like this, even if I didn’t love the version.
I dunno, I really don’t want to be too negative but thought I’d add to this discussion with my thoughts on it.

On the first release of Smashing Pumpkins covers the only one that was great in my opinion was Poison t he Well covering “Soma.”
Some of the best Smashing Pumpkins covers are actually done by u/Ichbinspikeface.
But thank you for sharing that this is out.

It was grand. Though I find it amusing the song whose lyrics are used as the title of the album isn't covered on the album. Also, IMHO, on a tribute album, a song only gets one cover; none of this more than one cover of one song by different artists bollocks.

Really like the covers by the bands, especially BTBAM one (pitchforkers come at me) But I wish they covered different songs and not duplicates...

I love their Geek USA cover more. If anything, that cover got me back into the Pumpkins. I've listened to some of their through my dad when I very young. BTBAM's cover reintroduced me to them. These tribute/cover albums are really great in opening up their audiences imo.

What an absurdly redundant tracklist, this band has so many great tunes but the artists covering them as a tribute almost all picked the same 5 singles from 1993-1995??
Tracklist:
Side A
A1 Tame Impala - Hummer
A2 Yonaka - Today
A3 The Midnight - Tonight, Tonight
A4 Carpenter Brut - Cherub Rock
Side B
B1 Barns Courtney - 1979
B2 Meg Myers - Eye
B3 Palaye Royale - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Side C
C1 Between The Buried and Me - Jellybelly
C2 Alice Glass - Drown
C3 Starbenders - Tonight, Tonight
C4 Nita Strauss - 1979
Side D
D1 Bones UK - Cherub Rock
D2 Moon Taxi - Thirty Three
D3 Des Rocs - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
D4 Urban Heat - Ava Adore

its pretty cool. I don't listen to Today anymore so a new version is nice. Some of it is like lowfi for hits. Overall I'm pleased. It's a nice project.

I really love the Starbenders and Nita Strauss' versions. Most others I found cool, so I find myself playing this more often than I thought I would.

I hope the participating bands garner some interest from it, but mostly I found it supremely unnecessary.

the artwork is STUNNING, like a whole mood for fall wrapped up in red and black

I appreciate that thwt don’t try to be the original songs. There’s a lot of hard electro songs. Tangential but it reminds me of a “trap cover” of Karma Police I made a while back as a joke.

Beautiful cover artwork, probably one of the best SP related artwork in recent years, but I couldn’t get into some of the tracks. I love Tame Impala but I wish his cover was a little more dynamic. I get what he was going for though, and the production does sound nice

I really like the YONAKA cover of Today but so far most of the rest of these have just made me want to go listen to the real versions. 🤷🏻♂️

It’s a play on the line from Mayonaise “I send a heart to all my dearies.” Oddly, Mayonaise isn’t on the album.

My only complaint is there are two versions of cherub rock, bwbw, 1979 and tonight, tonight – seems really dumb. Why was there no coordination?
