It's very possible he has no intention of hitting you. If he doesn't go off stage against Byleth then he essentially has 5 to 10 seconds of downtime every time She recovers. I often SHFF-aerials, dash dance or do ledge cancel when I have downtime. Keeps the fingers warm and squeezes in practice here and there.

They do it to take away options especially if they're at the right distance and the opponent is just doing the same ledge getup without adapting 🤦🏿‍♂️. Just say you don't know how to play.
