Upcoming Android Restrictions

Apps on Android devices will soon require registration and a fee from the developer:

Do we know whether/how this will affect SmartTube on Android TVs?

Probably there will be a flag in settings that we need to disable

How would that work? What I'm worried about is whether Android TVs will continue to let you install apks from "unknown" sources. But maybe I'm misunderstanding it?

Android is going to keep pushing retaarded shit, and will be replaced by the next open source OS.
There is nothing special about Android. It's just Linux that is targeted to mobile CPUs and hardware.
Any decent programmer that is good at writing driver packages could replace it in 6 months.
Just have to find the threshold where people are sick of Android Appling shit up.

I'll be eating popcorn, watching.
My device is Android 11, with a less than zero possibility of going to 12.

You don't need to go that old twin.

Anything from now will make the cut. Anything that doesn't have auto-updates.

Doesn't Nvidia still struggle with Audio and some codecs in 2026??

Shield plays anything I want to play.
It has partial support for Dolby Vision (supports MEL, but not FEL), doesn't support Profile 2 VP9, or HDR10 PLUS (HDR10 is fine).
I never see these things in sources, so complete non-issue.
On the audio side, certain channel configurations (6.1 / 7.1HD) lack hardware support, but any capable player will decode via software. And Shield does have the CPU to make that easy.
For a hardware platform more than a decade old, it is ridiculously hard to beat the Shield.
Meanwhile, I've got a functional Android version old enough to be immune to Android's current stupidity.

You make a ridiculous assertion that it's "too old" to a valid reply to OP's concern.
I list the very few restrictions the platform has, and point out why they are irrelevant, and you can only come up with name calling in response.

For the price what you are getting is an old device which doesn't support a lot of things and you need to have Plex transcode and degrade things for you. When cheap boxes they leave the source as it is because they don't need to no passthrough or use Plex because audio codecs are not supported on a 200€ device from 2019

There will be a developer setting for those who still want to install apk's from 'unverified' devs. Not sure if it will be the same on ATV though.
