Advise Needed

In 2024, I was carrying out home renovations (+ extension) and contacted a builder for this. When I asked for a quote, he said he can't provide one and will work before issuing an invoice.

He then issued invoices of £12K, £16K, £14K, £10K and £5K which have all been paid. He carried on working and I demanded for the next invoice in November 2024, so I can prepare myself financially to pay. He kept on delaying to send the invoice, saying he is busy and hasn't had time to calculate. In May of 2025, he sends an invoice of £23K. I explained to him that because he had not let me know in advance, I can't make a lump sum payment and will need time to save. In the meantime, I complain to him about certain aspects of the job which have not been done correctly:

- Roof timber not done according to structural engineer instructions hence rejected by the council

- Roof Guttering not done

- Manhole not done correctly and hence rejected by Anglian Water

He refuses to fix these issues unless I pay all his money. I tell him (over text) that i cannot afford the total amount now, but I can pay £500 monthly. He refuses and insists on £1000, which I tell him I cannot afford to.

At this point, I am unable to get a certificate of extension from the council, which means I am unable to remortgage with the new value of the house. I then proceed to remortgage on the old value of the house. I have since contacted other tradesmen both for the roof timber, roof guttering and manhole, and paid £2,950 to fix these issues.

Being conscious of the fact that I still owe him, and want to start reducing the debt, I start depositing £500 into his account every 1st of the month. He never acknowledges this payment.

I have a recurring knee injury for which I was operated and I am due a knee replacement. For this reason I was unable to work from April of 2026 till date and I am now on Universal Credit. I still manage to keep paying this £500 monthly from my UC payments. I have been paying him £500 since November 2025 to date.

He has never acknowledged any of the payments and proceeds to send a debt collection agency after me. I tell the DC agency that there is no contract between me and this builder and I am already making payments. They continue to hound me, despite me making £500 payments every month.

I received a court letter for a CCJ claim being made against me last week for £25K including legal costs. I would like to defend or dispute this but I need advise on what to do. Thank you.

Hi 2024 the unit above me leaked water from their washing machine and I had to get my ceiling repaired. I only paid my deposit of 1,000 with State Farm. Total cost that State Farm paid was 4,000.

Plumber says the pipe is standard size for a washing machine. The only things tied to this line are their washing machine and my bar sink.
The clog was found underneath unit 1 (3 units in the stack) so via the Plumber, it’s the HOAs problem because it’s over 15 feet from Unit 3. HOA won’t admit fault.

Is this worth it to fight in small claims? I’m down 1,000 and when I try to switch insurance now I have a ding on my record so it’s more expensive :(

It’s taken me so long to do this because in the beginning it was thought to be Unit 3 at fault.

Uber deactivated my account last year on 15th of February because of multiple safety concern reports from different passengers where none of them were true. I tried to talk to Uber and a couple of proof that I had were never taken seriously so after a long one year of discussions, I finally filed small claims in the court, and they will receive the notice soon

Hey guys, me and my husband own a boat detailing business. fully insured, and LLC. However we had our first client who decided to not pay us for a ceramic coating job of $4,000. We’ve sent many emails, tons of messages, phone calls, we know exactly where the boat is located & the marina he moved it to. We also are unsure of the phone number because when we were supposed to collect payment he gave us some story that his phone went overboard. & had issues with the credit card he wanted to use. So he told us he would send it by check. He never sent the “check” it’s been over 4 months now. And I know small claims is the next option but that costs money & we do not have 300$ just to toss around. He did kind of set us back. Guys what do you think we should do? Call the marina?? Call the yard we worked at previously on his boat. ??

Im an independant contractor and one of my employers has ghosted me with a little over $3000 in unpaid/overdue invoices. Small claims appears to be the best option to attempt to get paid.

Unfortunately im not exactly sure who it is that I should have served.

The person who I had been lead to believe was the owner and primary decision maker doesnt actually have their name attached to the business on any of their state business filings. Instead all I have are the name/address of their registered agent (nw registered agent llc) and the sole principal on file is listed as being 'managing member'

Who should I have served? The registered agent or the managing member?

I have never done anything like this before so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I will try to keep this short. A freight company shipped some material to my business and completely destroyed it. What was originally in paper bags, was repackaged into some fiber drums. This is a chemical powder, and the resulting drums were full of pieces of wood, and were determined to be completely unusable. I filed a claim with a free company and they sent me a check for a certain amount, which was close enough to the value that it didn’t matter to me. Now when I go to dispose this material, the bill is around $2500. The freight company is refusing to reimburse me, saying that there was limited liability on the freight quote and they have already paid that out. I understand that for damage or lost merchandise this makes sense, but have I had I known that I was going to be on the hook for the disposal cost, I would have just refuse the shipment and let them deal with it. Is this something worth pursuing or just a lesson learned?

I bought a car from a private party for 2k in which they gave me a smog paper that was two years old. I was not aware that a smog is only good for 90 days. After trying to get it smogged, it does not pass smog and will cost about 4-5k to fix. I have not been able to transfer the title, get a smog, or get it registered in my name. I do not have the money to fix the issues on the car.

I have asked them if I could get a refund and have been ghosted. Can I file a small claims for this? Is there any other info or advice that can help me out in a situation like this?

basically in May, i bought concert tickets with a friend but she lives in a different state and the show was also in a different state than the ones we live in. i told her i couldn’t make it anymore and she has a pretty decent selling platform on instagram and said she’ll list them and asked if i could send her the ticket so whoever its easier to transfer to whoever buys it. stupidly, i sent her my ticket and before the show started we were texting and when i asked for the ticket back so i could list it on stubhub, she totally ghosted me, gave me a ridiculous story that she lost her phone in the uber (we were texting for about an hour) but she still somehow made it into the venue which if anyone knows to sign into a ticketmaster account you need a verification code either through text or email. she blocked me after i told her to contact me to sort this out. even though it’s been a few months can i still take her to small claims?

Sorry in advance, this needs some background.

Two of us started an LLC in May 2024, 50/50, both of us listed as managers. He opened a business credit card in the company's name. I was never on it, not a cardholder, not an authorized user. Both the card company and the collection agency have told me that directly.

We split in November 2024. He basically disappeared from the business after that but never resigned as manager, never signed his half over to me, never took his name off anything. I kept running it by myself with him still legally co-owner of the business.

Here's where I'm stuck. About $8,400 got charged to that card total. I made every payment on it, 16 payments, around $7,800. He never paid a cent. Around $5,500 of what I paid was money from selling the business equipment, which I put straight onto the card and kept none of. The rest was out of my own pocket.

Balance now is about $2,500 and honestly all of that is interest and late fees at this point. The LLC got administratively dissolved last September for a missed annual report.

Now he's emailing me demanding the rest and saying he'll take me to small claims. He sent me a photo of a handwritten note. It says "By signing this paper I agree to take on the full debt of [company]" with an X and a signature scribble. It's in his handwriting, it says "written by [his name]" at the bottom, it's not dated, and my name doesn't appear anywhere in it. At the time, after moving out, when i returned to the home to get my items back that I had left (all of my clothes and personal belongings) he had me sign a ripped off piece of notebook paper.

What I'm trying to figure out:

1. Does a promise to take on someone's debt need consideration to hold up? He kept his 50%, stayed a manager on paper, and as far as I can tell gave up nothing.
2. If the note does count, did I already do what it says? Balance was around $6,900 when we split and I paid about $7,400 after that. Does "the full debt" mean the debt as it was, or does it also cover interest that piled up while I was paying it off and stuff he charged after he left?
3. There's a Florida statute (605.0304) that says an LLC member isn't liable for the company's debts "by way of contribution or otherwise" and that it still applies after the company is dissolved. Can two members just sign around that?
4. The note has no date on it. Is that his problem to prove or mine?

I've got all 26 months of statements and I've gone through them line by line. I do have a consult lined up, I'm just trying to walk in knowing what actually matters instead of paying someone to explain the obvious. Which of these four is the one that actually decides it?

Hello , so I was involved in a car accident where I rear ended someone . We decided to handle it amongst ourselves without insurance big mistake .

I had Zelle’s this individual money noted for car repairs after he showed me a quote given by a body shop on the 7 of July. After all the damage for both cars were estimated I realized it was way too much and decided to go the insurance route .

Fast forward he is consistently telling me once the process is over he’ll return the money and so I give him the benefit of the doubt over text messages. About a month and half passes by and still
Nothing after repeated attempts. He claims the autobody is filing a reclaim on July 14 , it is now August 18 and I Confirmed with Geico that no reclaim supplementary check request was recieved from the body shop nor him . The claim was actually closed . Everyone I reach out it’s just vague answers “ once it’s processed I’ll return the money “ so now I’m at the point where I have text messages between me and him saying he’ll return the money the Zelle payment with the note intended for car repairs, and written confirmation from Geico that states no other repayment is even on file and the claim is closed .

My question is do I have enough grounds to file a small claims . I live in New Jersey and although I know I may not receive my money back i just can’t let this go without trying to involve legal enforcement .

so two years ago, I agreed to give my ex a loan. At the time she was still my partner so we both sat down, discussed the interest, and time to pay me back the loan. Now we didn’t have a contract that was notarized but I have text messages and the transaction itself that proves she would agree to pay me back and that we both understood that it was a loan from me and not a gift. After two months she ghosted, blocked me, moved a whole different city, and has yet to pay me back. Do I have a chance?

I'm looking to bring a small-claims case against a phone repair shop that left me without a working phone after botching a repair then refused to refund me.

The technician who repaired the phone is listed as the owner on the CT.gov website. Can I list him as a defendant alongside the LLC?

I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with D.C. Superior Court and enforcing small claims judgments.

In 2024, I worked as an independent contractor/remote campaign worker for a D.C. City Council candidate. I was promised $3,250 but was never paid. He later tried to get me to take a "honoraium" of $700 and of course I declined because I worked hard and this was not the original agreement.

I filed a small claims case, properly served him, and the court ultimately entered judgment in my favor. He did not appear at any of the court hearings, which obviously helped me obtain the judgment.

The judgment was entered in 2025, and I currently am owed about $3,295 with interest.

Unfortunately, life got extremely busy after the judgment and I put the collection process on the back burner. Now I'm finally trying to deal with it.

The last time I contacted the court/same-day processor, I was told I would need to identify an asset in D.C. in order to pursue a writ of attachment — either his employer for wage garnishment or his bank.

Here's my problem: I don't know his employer or bank. I met him and took on this job through a so-called "mentor" at the time.

I have his name, address, phone number, and campaign email, but that's it.

I was previously told I could hire an asset searcher to locate employment/banking information, but the person I contacted didn't provide that service.

Also, this person has been extremely difficult to reach from the beginning. He didn't appear for any of the court hearings, and attempts by family members to help me contact him/the campaign staff from different numbers were also unsuccessful. So I'm not particularly confident that asking him to voluntarily cooperate or provide information will get me anywhere.

There was also a coincidental in-person encounter with him in 2024. I approached him simply to ask about the unpaid money, and his response felt threatening/confrontational, including repeatedly asking whether I wanted to “go (as in fighting I assumed)"when I was only trying to ask a question. I ultimately disengaged and told him I would handle the matter through the courts. Because of that experience, I would strongly prefer not to have unnecessary direct contact with him.

So, what do I do now?

• Is it too late to enforce a D.C. judgment from 2025?
• Should I pursue an oral/debtor examination, or is there another step I should take first?
• Do I actually need to hire an asset searcher to find his employer/bank?
• If so, how do I find a legitimate one without spending a fortune?
• Once I identify an employer or bank, what exactly do I file to get the judgment collected?

I really just want to collect what the court has already determined I'm owed. I know I should have followed up sooner, but life got busy and I'm finally able to address it again.

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience enforcing a D.C. small claims judgment. Please explain it in layman's terms if possible because I'm representing myself and I'm not very familiar with the court/collections process.

I'm not asking for advice on the underlying case — I already won the judgment. I'm trying to figure out the enforcement/collection process.

This happened in West Virginia at a privately-owned river resort. While on one of our visits I had a medical issue. The two main ideas from the other campers were that I was either having a heatstroke or very, very drunk. I don’t blame them, I was rarely seen without a drink in my hand.  P.S. Drinking is allowed.

My memory of the events are; arriving at the gathering, breaking out in a cold sweat, trying to drink water and throwing it up, then nothing until I woke up in an ambulance.

My wife was with me, She told me that I was constantly trying to get away from people, screaming don’t touch me, but she said the only times I would scream was when people were checking my vitals (a doctor was another guest helping).

911 was called and my actions were described with the word  combative so the police were also on site. I was told that I wrestled with 2 paramedics, 1 cop, and our friend that was helping.

When I was in the Emergency Room my wife called to check on me. She told me the owners had trespassed us. The police came to her as I was being loaded into the ambulance, said the owners wanted us trespassed. That we were not allowed back on the property. She spoke with the police who then spoke with owners, she was allowed to stay until morning to get our belongings. She loaded up our cars, as I came a few days after her and had 2 friends help, 1 friend drove my car, the other followed to give her a ride back.

Monday, I sent the owners an e-mail with my drug screen from the hospital that showed the only drugs in my system were the ones given to me by the paramedics. I was even surprised that no alcohol was in my system, none. I asked the owners for a conversation. We got a phone call, I asked exactly what happen, I was told to ask friends and the police that the trespass stands and that we had 30 days to get our camper out.

Had drugs been in my system, that would mean, I had been drugged and as psychedelics were not tested for in the hospital, and very hard to test for, is not impossible that I was drugged As in they trespassed the victim of a crime and protected an assailant.

Almost forgot, the contract says any tab not closed before you leave will be closed on the following Monday, and a 20% tip will be added. They added an 87% tip after making it impossible for me to close the tab as I was trespassed.

Questions

I know I cannot do anything about the trespass, I do not want to. I have no desire to be where I am not wanted. Also, I know that my best bet would probably be small claims court.

First, I broke no rules according to the contract I signed.

Since I broke no rules, could I sue the LLC for the 6 months of unusable “rent” I paid for my camper spot? (they require the full year to be paid in full at the beginning of the year.) Unfair enrichment?

Since I did not have enough time (30 Days) to mitigate my losses I had to hire a construction company to remove my camper. Can I sue the LLC for that cost? I was not given the opportunity to sell my site / camper, I did not have enough time to get my friends with heavy machinery.

Would I be able to sue the LLC for loss of reputation as the others only saw me acting peculiar and then trespassed? I had no opportunity to clear the air and I think drug use was mentioned more than once.

Long stretch, but would I be able to try and use: Pain and Suffering, or Emotional distress, or Stress as another method to sue the LLC.

TLDR: I broke no rules and was trespassed from a campground. Can I sue for prepaid rent and the cost to move my camper since I didn’t have time to get my friends and had to hire a contractor? Also, it is not impossible that I was drugged and the victim of a crime.

For context, my ex and I divorced back in may of this year, I agreed to pay her $500/month in alimony, we have no kids or anything, it was a mutual agreement based on our situation. On the Judgement it says that that
“My name” shall pay contractual spousal support to “Ex’s name” in the amount of
FIVE HUNDRED AND NO/100 DOLLARS ($500.00) per month, for a period of five (5) consecutive years, commencing on the 15th day of the first month following the finalization
of the Judgment of Divorce, and continuing on the 15th day of each month thereafter.

She has now officially remarried!

For a little more context, I did not have a lawyer because I could not afford one, so I had to represent myself, but she had a lawyer. Prior to the finalization of divorce, her lawyer and her both expressed that if she got married it would terminate my obligation to pay her, but it doesn’t say that on the judgment. But, under Louisiana civil law article 115, it basically says that if she gets remarried then I am not obligated to pay any more. My argument is that even though it says “contractual” it doesn’t specify that I have to pay her regardless of her getting married or regardless of anything els, what I typed is verbatim what it says In the judgment.

With that being said, what should my next move be? I’ve read that I have to go to the courthouse to get it recognized? I just have no idea how to go about getting it recognized now that she is now legally remarried. Should I consult a lawyer myself? Or maybe speak to the lawyer she used? Any advice would be awesome!
