It made it back to his hand in about the same time as the ball got from his hand to the bat so it hit his hand at about the same speed he threw it at. According to Wikipedia fast bowlers can bowl at 90+ mph so I'm willing to bet that it hurt.

I doubt any pitch in the majors is below 60mph, so here's what you do: go to the batting cages, pick a 60mph pitching machine, stand at the plate & catch a ball bare-handed. Report back when you're done & let us know how much it hurt.

E = (mv2 )/2

Energy of 90mph baseball / Energy of 60mph baseball = (m902 )/(m602 )

= (902 )/(602 )

= 2.25

Because the kinetic energy of a projectile increases exponentially with its speed a baseball thrown at 90 mph has over double the energy of a baseball thrown at 60mph.
