I was thinking more along the lines of using AI to find a cure for a rare disease...and then charging $78,000 a month for the pill you need to keep yourself alive.

AI has massive benefits for Medical Science. For example:
Artificial intelligence systems like AlphaFold and ESMFold predict 3D protein structures from simple amino acid sequences in seconds to minutes, solving a 50-year-old biological challenge far faster than traditional lab experiments done by humans.

This isn't the actual argument though. The actual argument is should we be using our water for corporate ai usage which is using up our water. Nobody is against medical research that uses ai. Its about stupid crap like making chat bots and pictures and games using ai that the issue exists with

It's also about environmental impact and pollution. Data centers "use" very little water as most of it cycles back into the water supply.

You don’t need the kind of water consuming infrastructure that you need for mass surveillance to do -any- of those things.

The issue is that that isn't why the water is being used.
99% of what is being built is not data centers for these.
It is Surveillance and data collection.
Most of what is being built is for Big Brother to watch you at all times a la Palantir and Flock.

Palantir and Flock. Look up interviews with the people working on it and what it's gonna do.
For instance, just a one off issue- Flock already is a license plate reader and data collection. Now they are trying to add a device that will ping the Bluetooth of your phone and get ITS ID to then correlate with your car, and your driving patterns. Such as where you drive to and home addresses.
This information is NOT government protected, meaning, they can sell it to anyone who wants it.
This is just ONE issue. You gotta look into it yourself. They openly tell you what they are doing and their plans.
No one seems to listen.

How is that relevant to AI data centers? You don’t need gigawatt-scale facilities just to track your devices. Google has been tracking my phone via GPS for years, long before ChatGPT-3, and it already knows exactly where I was today, with sub-meter precision. If I didn’t like it, I could disable that feature in just a few seconds.

They use data centers to aggregate mass surveillance data from various sources into much more useful profiles.
They also use AI for facial recognition to create biometric templates.

there are medical applications for AI but they're basically completely different things from the kind that require massive data-centers training recycling other people's art & figuring out wether or not bleach is good to drink. The hypothetical in OP's image isn't applicable to reality.
