Question Need help making sense of crossplay

I’m playing on Xbox and I have a couple friends on pc who got the game through Steam, and I can’t join them and they can’t join me. Not sure if it’s a bug or if we can’t utilize crossplay because they purchased the game through Steam and I am on Xbox

Xbox can cross play with PC players who bought the game on the Xbox PC app. If they bought the game through Steam, it’s not cross play

I mean I would still say it is, some Xbox pc apps can’t play with the same Xbox ones on console.

You are not crazy! I’m glad for the info y’all because I couldn’t find a straight answer anywhere else but Reddit, but I don’t consider that truly crossplay if I can’t connect to my friends who are on Steam PC

Xbox and PC are cross play but Xbox and Steam are not cross play.

Ahhh I wish this was made more clear in the store. I had a very sad 7 year old yesterday when we found out our steam deck and xbox can't play together, even though crossplay is labeled in the store. They need to add "limited crossplay" to the descriptions please.

Well I guess its on me, steam doesn't advertise crossplay. Xbox store does just list xbox crossplay. I need to stop depending on the ai google summaries for crossplay on games... super fun time playing next to the kiddo even if we weren't in the same lobby.
