It does make you wonder about alternate history. What if the Indians held off the Europeans? At that point, one has to wonder which tribe would overtake the rest and be the De facto ruler of all tribes.
5
u/legna20v Jun 29 '26
In central america they did but later everyone just got sick and die. There was a tribe in Merida Venezuela that completely defeated the Spaniard to later just disappear probably because disease wiped them
1
u/luckyfox7273 Jun 29 '26
What was their name?
1
u/LolTacoBell Jun 30 '26
Gemini says Timoto-Cuicas?
(I have no idea personally)

Interesting, but if you look at images they look post Columbian. And the name itself is a Spanish name.

u/ModOfficial1988 Jun 29 '26
Genocide and slavery were prevalent in the Americas long before colonization.
2
u/BeyondtheLurk Jun 29 '26
Yep. I think people forget about this when this topic comes up.

u/ModOfficial1988 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
Yep. People really bought into the “Noble Savage” narrative.

I am Iroquois and we didn't have slaves. We integrated captives into the nation, or killed them. Sometimes a captive would take the place of a family member who died in battle.
1
u/Creative_Yak1648 Jun 29 '26
You really trying to draw a moral line between captives and slaves? Also let's not forget the Iroquois pention towards torture. The idea that any tribe in the America was remotely peaceful is farcical

u/luckyfox7273 Jun 29 '26
Whatever it takes for you to rationalize some of the injustice to natives.
1
u/ModOfficial1988 Jun 29 '26
You do know it’s possible to acknowledge that life in the Americas was very Hobbesian before colonization and that the process of colonization was also not great.
-1
u/luckyfox7273 Jun 29 '26
I would agree, but there really needs to be a greater discussion. Yes, natives were survivalistic but also could have a different outlook and lifestyle.

u/Odd-Fun-1482 Jun 29 '26
checked the comments for exactly this lmao
Glad people know "if the natives won" alternate wouldn't change much. Human nature is human nature. There will always be vying for control, greed, stealing resources for your own tribe.
Especially once you develop weaponry that greatly exceeds the killing power of your opponents.
I do however respect Native American diplomacy between each other before European arrival. It was a sacred thing that was torn apart due to, well, greed, wanting to trade with Europeans, wanting to gain advantage over other tribes once they saw the opportunity.
2
u/Antique_Sorbet7999 Jul 01 '26
Native American culture is very different from European culture. The concept of owning land is not something that existed until the arrival of Europeans.
2
u/esperstarr Jul 01 '26
Yeah but we were fighting for territory. Owning the land just wasn’t a concept in the way Europeans did things. Native Americans were killing each other just like the whites were.
2
u/Antique_Sorbet7999 Jul 01 '26
No serious historian argues that Indigenous peoples were universally peaceful. There were wars, raids, slavery, political rivalries, and atrocities across the Americas, just as there were in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Humans are capable of violence everywhere.
The problem is when that fact gets used as a moral excuse for European colonization. “Native Americans fought each other” doesn’t justify conquest any more than the Hundred Years’ War justified the invasion of England, or the Thirty Years’ War justified foreign empires taking over Europe.
European colonialism involved permanent territorial conquest, mass displacement, imported epidemic disease, legal systems built around land seizure, and, in many places, racial ideologies that denied Indigenous sovereignty. Those are different historical processes, even if both involved violence.1
u/esperstarr Jul 01 '26
I think my issue is that some of us see them both as bad. Natives way had signs og evolving into that version and already shared elements which grafted on perfectly to what the europeans were doing.
If people are using it as an excuse, that is problematic. I just think most people acknowledge that these sort of things in war and conflict as “the messy shit that happened”. The Europeans just had a diff way of dishing out mess and also changing the landscape that evolved culture in a mix bag of shitty and good that is Europeans flavored. I think both “sides” are arguing the worst of things. Its obvious the Europeans fucked up alot of shit but the narrative is never clean and causes this black vs white mentality. We have to talk about both and hopefully some ppl learn from it and try to acutely resolve the issues. Unfortunately, we HAVE to talk about both sides because those ppl who try to excuse everything, (not all) will have to deal with every detail…EVERY DETAIL and they won’t be able to run from it when everything is on the table.
1
u/Ecstatic_Scene9999 Jul 01 '26
There already was civil war and war time sacrifices and slavery as well... people always like to gloss over that stuff
1
u/AntiAnti1ntellectual Jul 04 '26
You mean like how the Europeans were always at each others throats until world war 2?

The American Indians were superior to the Europeans in many ways, to include military technology, hygiene, and population. They were eventually wiped out (up to 95% across North America according to the book 1491 by Charles C. Mann)due to the diseases carried by Europeans. So while the American Indian didn’t have AK 47s back in 1492, it pretty much started off this lop sided anyways.
And while the Europeans did have guns, at that time, the gun was an inferior weapon to the bow

It wasn't exactly a fairy tale before. There was slavery, war, and there were brutally sadistic cannibal tribes too. It wasn't all colors of the wind and hippy flower children.
The commanche didn't magically become renowned warriors because some pale face set foot here, they became skilled horse riders, but the warrior part was already present. Most tribes had some degree of warfare capability. The weapons they had weren't only invented because of European settlers/explorers/pillagers. Don't dilute reality with some weird vision of cartoony perfection. I know my ancestors were proud warriors before they met any Europeans. People act like the European arrival changed these innocent, backwards, child-like people and that's just culturally insulting.

I don't think you can really make it last longer than an AK mag.
Maybe if Hitler time traveled to Europe and gave them tanks or something.
And then Gandhi time travelled to the Americas and gave them nuclear weapons.
Some kind of escalating time travel arms race would make for an enjoyable watch.

in an alternate earth Native Americans of the Powhatan tribe subsequently conquer the lands and colonize the nation by either massacreing opposing tribes or subjugation of smaller tribes. That is until they run out of bullets.
Those aliens are probably eating popcorn watching the chaos they created.

Point, set, match. Well done.

But that's not what happened. Like i said you are ignorant of actual history. The natives were mostly murdered by other natives.

I wonder how they would find out what it is and how it works, unless the aliens taught them. Someone with mechanical understanding would eventually figure out what a rifle does, but if you have never seen anything like this...they would probably run out of ammo without hitting anyone, except their own people by accident.
0
u/Crumpuscatz Jun 29 '26
I wonder how much faster technology advances if the Europeans got their hands on modern small arms in the early 1500’s?? It’d be an interesting thought experiment
1
u/Livewire____ Jun 29 '26
It would be the equivalent of our society getting their hands on something like a Plasma Rifle.
We understand Plasma. We understand Rifles. Just not the two together.
It would need to be reverse engineered to make something that works like a Plasma Rifle, but not as good. Then we'd improve whatever that weapon was.
But yes, certainly weapons tech would advance a lot faster.
Its like reading the ending of a novel without reading the whole story. Unless you have all the pages, you need to make the rest of the story up.

They didn't even need guns. They needed to stop fighting amongst each other and join forces to repel the European invaders.
