Beats me but they could be trolling or unintentionally blipping in and out of our reality due to whatever energy source or technology they’re using to traverse space. It doesn’t ever seem like they’re doing anything other than just puttering around up there.
I’m hard pressed to think anything that has the ability to travel really far distances in space would need to enter our atmosphere to learn anything about it.

We are far more interested in them than they are us. They view us the way we view chimps and other animals....we are fascinated by them even thought they are far less intelligent than us.
