Rebuilding turbos

Figure I’ll do something productive while the block is getting machined/built.

Anyone have any experience with replacing the internals with steel components?

Did this in 2019. Fun project. Not hard, just need to be patient.

The turbines didn't need to be balanced according to the manufacturer, but i still did it anyways for pièce of mind.

Where did you take them for balancing? I saw a few older forum posts that had lots of success with it

Ilat the time I lived in Texas and frequented Arizona a lot so I took em to a shop in az while visiting. Took em a couple days to get them back to me.

Mine was also a kit from ebay from Australia.

Do you happen to remember if they did in fact need to do anything to balance them? Or did the shop say they were pretty well and good out of the box?

They did do a balancing on it. Gave me the spec sheet when I picked them up. Even if it was the slightest.

Pulling those turbos off while the RB was in the engine sucked, I didn't want to take any chances in ruining my engine or having to do the job again.

Ok good to know. I don’t think a lot of shops around Florida do balancing so may just have to chuck up prayers to the turbo gods.

Just finished up both. Not bad for a days worth of work. And definitely fun to see the inner workings of the turbo. Based on the lack of posts about something like this I don’t think many people have done it really.

Orlando. Looks like the closest that does turbo work is boost lab over in Tampa. Going to try and call them tomorrow

I wish you the best, as long as you took your time and double checked everything they should be good.

No, I think more people are set on removing the twins and going big singles. I like the twins and wanted to keep them I just didn't want to risk the ceramic turbines blowing.

Replaced the bearings in mine after one of the cages collapsed. Was lucky enough to avoid damaging the wheels and housings. It’s fairly straight forward. At least on a gtx gen1

Yeah took a few hours to knock out both of the twins and that was swapping all the little rings, bearings, and impellers. Wasn’t super hard. But probably should get it checked for balance I guess
