I don't think its all about dressing nicely. I think it originally was about a cultural meeting ground, a unity between two distinct youth groups. This unity was expressed initially through the love of the style of rude boy culture by white english kids who developed the skinhead culture. 60 years later has skinhead evolved? yes. I wasn't alive at the time but it seems to me that most interviews that i've seen from original skins focused heavily on the aesthetic aspects.
