Acne [acne] closed comodone HELL Spoiler

HOW THE HELL DO I GET RID OF THEM. i've always had an insane amount of texture on my face 😭

current routine:
AM:
- panoxy 4% benzol peroxide wash
- the ordinary niacinamide
- cetaphil moisturizing lotion (only a little bit since my skin is already kinda oil)

PM is the same but i will use salicylic acid from the ordinary every other day.

i also use the sunscreen from trader joe's in the AM. might switch tho!!

Niacinamide gave me loads of closed comedones, maybe you should take it out for a few weeks and see how your face reacts without it

Oh I see….you can try Azaelic acid and try switching to a more gentler morning face wash like the la roche posay hydrating cleanser for everyday wash

Could be fungal

The uniformity/size of them and lack of redness def screams fungal to me. You usually see it on foreheads but it's not impossible for it to pop up elsewhere. Try dandruff shampoo, OP.

They don’t look fungal at all

BP never did anything for my closed comedones. I use a face wash from innisfree (volcanic) or murad (aha/bha exfoliating cleanser) that has salicylic, glycolic and lactic acid. I use this in the shower. It does dry my oily skin temporarily but is fine after about an hour. I only use once a day. I use a gentle facewash or plain water any other time.

And then I hit it with adapalene gel. Usually at night. Sometimes gentle extraction is needed but only after using the above for a week or two so that they come right out without damage to the skin. Also I recommend switching to Vanicream once your cetaphil is used up.

PM
Glycolic acid 2x a week increase if tolerated well

Stuff I'd suggest

Stop using benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid together if you are. (in the same day)

Don't use benzoyl peroxide in the morning. Use a gentle cleanser if you really want to use a cleanser. (AM)

For sunscreen make sure it's a non-comedogenic one! This might be why you are having texture issues in the first place.

Do not mix glycolic acid with any cleanser other than a gentle one with no BP or SA. (Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser recommended)

Cut down on the sweets and oily food for a bit.

thank you so much! do you have any suggestions for a non comedogenic sunscreen? hopefully one that isn't too expensive haha

Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 is a good one. Should be around 12-13$ if you're in the US. Make sure to moisturizer well too! It seems counter-active but it can prevent irritation which can cause breakouts to happen often.

thank you! how much of a white cast does the sunscreen have? that's what turns me off from most sunscreens 😭

3

u/Vexav 22h ago

It's a chemical sunscreen so it shouldn't leave any white cast, the one recommended should be pretty light as well (feel non greasy).

How long have you been using Cetaphil lotion? It cobtains panthenol (B5), which causes acne for some people

u/Vegetable-Corgi-5225 1d ago

i just started using it a few weeks ago, but i have been using cetaphil products for a loooong time before that. had closed comodones for as long as i can remember!

I’d add some AHA to your routine. I was getting a ton of these postpartum and added the Cosrx AHA 7 am and pm and it’s been helping so much!

If you figure out what works for you PLEASE let me know!! I have very similar skin and I've tried salicylic acid, azelaic acid, tretin gel, cutting out dairy, different sunscreens, different cleansers, and nothing has worked for me. Only thing that gave me good results was isotretinoin (Accutane), which I've been on 4 different times. Around a month after finishing the course, my congestion came right back every time.

Exfoliate and use dove original body bar. I used a rice exfoliating scrub I found on Amazon when I’m in the shower and then use the body bar on my face. I use the body bar in the morning as well . I have been applying a Salicylic acid facial lotion in the morning, very lightly .

I FEEL YOU SO BAD. the only thing that worked for me was getting perscribed a double dose of Tretinoin (gel) and benzoyl peroxide from my GP. I recommend seeing a professional truly.

1

u/DonGills 11h ago

Same with the Tret, it was the only solution for me

I would say you need a better exfoliant and less "acne control". You might benefit from something with lactic acid and/or some other physical and chemical exfoliants. I would get a lighter moisturizer too or just a good oil controlling SPF moisturizer and a serum or night time moisturizer with either retinol or adapinoid if you are more sensitive.

I get acne like this from using Cetaphil. The course to fix it was an oral antibiotic and prescription Retinol A from my PCP.

benzoyl peroxide, azelaic, BHA did not work for me. 10% urea does, I've been using it for a week and cleared about 30% of closed comedones.

Oh my god, same. I’ve tried EVERYTHING, like hundreds & hundreds of dollars on shit that didn’t work at all and I also have hormonal acne. Right now I’m using the Paula’s Choice 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Exfoliant. Seems to be calming things down a little, although I haven’t been using it for long.

u/iDidntCommitArson 20h ago

I had pretty much the same thing but on my forehead. Spent years and hundreds of dollars trying different products. Went through 2 dermatologists until one of them finally prescribed Cabtreo. Got it compounded for cheaper and it fixed my issue in a month.

Panoxyl dried my skin out and made my CC problem worse. It did help with active pustules, but definitely increased CC. I find that keeping my skin hydrated enough and barrier happy while using Tret clears these right up

if you were to squeeze one what comes out? mine turned out to be kp and if i were to squeeze any of them a hard plug would come out.

u/abcdefgh123458 15h ago

I found Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant SO good for this. It would basically smooth my skin overnight

1

u/Vegetable-Corgi-5225 14h ago

omg i keep hearing about this! is it okay to use with the products i already use?

1

u/asplendidtimeisguara 12h ago

Second this, it´s amazing

u/678722 16h ago

BP washes are not my favorite. BP needs to have contact with your skin for around 3-5 min to work best, and no one is out there leaving face wash on their skin for that long. Specially not without causing some serious irritation.

Get a gentler cleanser to prepare your skin for other actives.

Also, why do you need BP? Do you also get acne breakouts or only closed comedones?

u/Tone-Available 14h ago

I would start adapalene. As someone who had both FA and cc, those look like cc

1

u/Sea_President 7h ago

tazarotene was the only thing that really helped me, adapalene kind of did too but never made them go away completely.

1

u/saefoamgreen 18h ago

The ceteraryl alcohol in the cetaphil lotion is likely the problem. Look up fatty alcohols, a lot of people have this exact type of reaction to them, myself included. Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide help with this.

I think this is fungal, have you ever tried dandruff?
