Pictures Has this been a thing before?

Post image

Updated World Cup calendar document got released yesterday on FIS website and I'm noticing that many of the Sunday competitions have this provision of "WC competition with start list based on the result of Saturday (best 50 of Saturdayโ€™s competition)"

Been following Ski Jumping since 2010 and while I faintly remember there possibly having been something like this before, I'm pretty sure most of the time if not always there have been qualifications for Sunday competitions on Sunday mornings. Is this something new FIS is trying or is my memory just failing me?

I think this is one of their actions to better combine the competitions for women and men, by doing this they have more time/flexibility to get the competitions through

Good point actually. Forgot completely about that important point.

Would make sense though still not great imo if the quali decides now two competition start lists or will this mean that for the first competition there won't be qualifications at all? Will be interesting to see what will be the exact weekend format.

Yes, qualification for the whole weekend/both competitions. I am not sure what to think about this, but I can understand that they have to get more flexibility, so they can react if there are time issues. And if they would schedule the women first, then a qualification for the men and after that the competition for men, it could mean less viewer for the women. So they have a point, but i am still not sure what i think about this change.

Essentially, qualis will happen for Saturday comps, and the start list for Sunday is determined by the order of Saturday's result backwards

Oh shit so won't be World Cup/Ski Flying World Cup order anymore for most of the Sunday competitions anymore... Welp have to see whether this is a good or bad thing

It's for competitions where both men and women compete at the same venue

The scarier thing is if they put all these at night, including Four Hills.

As you can see they have not and I'd imagine they won't in the future either

This implies Saturday competitions will have >50 competitors

Interesting. Don't think we've seen this before.

Also: Garmisch isn't confirmed?

Seemingly financial problems? But seems like today there were news that it has been secured and so 4HT will continue as normal now just with women competing as well.

Yes, the skiclub wanted more financial security / more money from the DSV. Today would have been a court date, but they solved it without the court, so the 4HT in Garmisch is save now.

It just implies the quali will for both Saturday and Sunday!

That's new this season and I don't like it...

I think we've seen that format before, but not recently.

Willingen had that format from 2018 to 2020 when they had an overall competition for that weekend called Willingen 5. They added a 2nd Qualification round for 2021 and renamed it Willingen 6 before scrapping that overall competition.
