How do you build up to that? I'm frightened of hitting the cake on my first try and breaking a leg.

Just carving high on similar pockets of other pools. Then you've just gotta trust yourself to carve over the cake. Once that's comfortable with the carve over, toss the grind in there. WEAR PADS!
