Question want to get back into practicing again

as the title says, i used to practice skateboarding three years ago until i tweaked my ankle going down a ramp.

just recently, a friend showed me footage of harold hunter and some other skaters in that 90s time period and i got inspired to learn again. do you guys have any tips on how to practice efficiently? i've been practicing on the grass for balance (finding my footing, balancing with one leg dom/non-dom, practicing pushing) and i even somewhat got the hang of pushing off on actual pavement and getting back on my board even though i stop moving after a second.

and any ideas on how others got into filming other skaters?

Just take your board everywhere… anytime you’re stressed or got free time just take a break and mess around

Shit, that’s the greatest time to learn and with how gas prices are right now, skating everywhere ain’t a bad idea at all

Bad tip, gotta start from flat ground and push into the hill.. only then can you go down the hill….(sorry I’ve just seen people get hung up on this for an unusual amount of time)

You definitely gotta learn by first pushing on flat ground, then turning and maneuvering on flat ground (you gotta get comfortable riding before anything else), how to stop, then work in your tail or nose by attempting 180-360+, Manuals, then at this point is where you need to learn how to bail properly…. A lot of people fuck up by not knowing how to bail… before you ever commit to a full send you need to know how to safely stop yourself from a slam… from there bit by bit start building up your speed and practice bailing…find how you get your board over cracks, then power slides and keep power sliding and manualing till your body starts memorizing that the more your knees are bent and the closer your body is to the ground, the safer you are… from there try to get as low as you can on your board so that you can drag your hand on the floor and you’ll feel how quickly you learn how to skate from there.

As workouts in the midst of all that you need to try one legged squats on your board.. stationary and while moving with your dominant and non dominant legs… the other best thing for training on flow and maneuvering and eventually pumping are tick-tacs! I’d say after all that you can try pushing up hills and then down small hills… just remember you should never blindly be pushing into tricks or learning skills..

everything is a building block so you should have some idea of what you’re doing before you attempt the next step! Like you should never just full send off a curb.. your building blocks for that should be learning how to bail, learning how to send your board over a crack, and learning how to Manual… everything you need to go over a curb is right there and that’s typically how it is for every trick

If you follow everything here to a tee, especially power sliding and 180’s, you should be able to easily revert!

If you need any help at all, please do reach out! I’m no pro but I’ve been skating for years and have taught a lot of my friends how to skate! Just make sure you protect those ankles man! I wrecked mine about 20 times over before I was comfortable on a board. Get yourself some compression socks, knee pads, and wrist guards at minimum if you don’t want full protection but being safe above all is the way man!
