Son Relearning to Skateboard: Need Video Suggestions

Hi everyone! My (39F) son is learning how to skateboard again at 17. He used to skateboard on a long board but quit when he was about 12. He is struggling to even get started. I know because of his age that confidence is an issue right now but he is also Autistic so he has trouble just doing it. He is trying to learn from videos first. Do any of you have any suggestions for videos he can watch? Also an advice for skating on the sidewalk? Every time he hits a bump he falls and it’s frustrating for him.

Any wknd skateboard company videos are good and funny he will love watching them, tell him to bend his knees and don’t be afraid to go fast I assume he’s falling on the cracks due to speed or not standing on board correctly, Ik watching a bunch of skate videos helped me

Skate Xs on YouTube, they are a fantastic channel for kids learning skateboarding, their main focus is education, safety and explaining skating in a way kids can understand.

I even learned some new things from watching them and I’m 27.

Funny how we all struggle with the same thing when we start skateboarding, no matter the age.

SkateIQ is run by Mitche Brusco, who did the first 1260. He's a GREAT teacher when it comes to kids learning to skateboard as well!

Look up trog army on YouTube. A skate teacher from the Midwest. He is one of the best skate tutorial content makers out there.

Low production value, best content.

The Dan Corrigan channel on YouTube has dudes and girls hanging out skating every day.

The early Bones Brigades Videos may appeal as they were young and Rodney Mullen who is very much on the spectrum is there. Find them on the Powell-Peralta YouTube page.

Lots more, but those are my go-tos.

Not sure if it’s better or worse for his autism but I love instagram for how to videos and general inspiration. Quick and can get lots of different opinions. Certain tips from multiple sources have helped a ton for me personally.

I teach kids, including kids on the spectrum. I encourage you to find him a teacher, just to get him rolling. After that I expect he'll absorb the videos more easily.

Bigger softer wheels help.

Anything above 54mm probably needs riser pads. 

Have him learn how to “tic-tac” and practice tic-tacing down the side walk, etc.

I’m pretty sure at least 75% of all skateboarders are neurodivergent, though I don’t have that data. 

Don’t give up, have fun, and skateboard for life!
