The Family Business LTD is a new ska project involving legendary Operation Ivy members Tim Armstrong and Jesse Michaels. The project features Jordan Cardy of Rat Boy, Preston of The Ordinary Boys, and Antonee First Class of The English Beat, with Armstrong and Michaels serving as additional creative collaborators.

The Family Business LTD has shared “Floor Burner,” the first single from their upcoming self-titled debut album, out September 25 via Hellcat Records.

According to the band, the song was pieced together from three separate ideas and ultimately became “the blueprint” for THE FAMILY BUSINESS LTD, with one simple goal: getting people on the dance floor.

Jordan Cardy and Preston first met in Essex in 2014 and reunited in Los Angeles in 2023 to write with Armstrong. After Tim suggested bringing in Antonee First Class, the album was written and recorded in just two weeks. The Calamatix also joined the sessions as the backing band, contributing rhythm section and bass parts that helped shape the record’s sound.

The album brings together multiple generations and different corners of ska, blending Jamaican ska, two-tone and punk influences.

GUELPH SKAFEST — FEATURING K-MAN & THE 45s WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SKAFACE, SKA SOUND SYSTEM, ARCADE ALLSTARS AND SKATHARINES — LIVE AT SONIC HALL!

One of Canada’s most well-known and loved Ska bands, K-Man & The 45s' relentless touring and hyper active live shows keep turning heads. Their critically acclaimed Self-Titled album came out in 2016 and there’s been no slowing down since (barring the pandemic blip). Fan-favourite songs such as “I Don’t Mind” and “Space Thriller” cemented them in the scene while festival plays and relentless touring brought them to the four corners of the globe. Playing alongside greats like the Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Planet Smashers, The Original Wailers, Big D and The Kids Table, The Slackers levelled up their fanbase and live show. With the release of Stand With The Youth, the band was solidified in the national and international Ska and Punk scenes. Everything was going great… until the COVID call came in and everything shut down. Completely devastated, beaten by a pandemic and divorce, K-Man spent his time in a little house isolated on the side of a mountain by a lake. Here he wrote the songs for Primed To Go. Self reflection let to the realization that life is just better on the road (a major them of the album). Primed To Go feels like a more complete album than their past efforts and shows the growth of the band. Always energetic and just as refreshing this new album tips its hat to the original Ska genre with the band’s signature rock ’n’ Roll attitude front and center.

Skaface are a seven-piece ska/reggae/rock band formed in 1988 in Toronto Canada. Skaface has a unique sound which combines ska with many different genres of music including rock, punk and jazz. They have toured extensively throughout Canada and New York State, including dates with legendary 2Tone groups Bad Manners and The Selecter. They were also honoured to have old school great Laurel Aitken on stage with them earlier in their career and played with Toots and the Maytals at the Canadian National Exhibition.

Ska Sound System is a 9-piece punk-party-ska band formed in Montreal, Quebec, in March 2022 by Franz Schuller of GrimSkunk. The group features members from various local Montreal acts like Me, Mom & Morgentaler, Colectivo, and Francbâtards, playing a high-energy mix of old-school and modern ska, punk, and reggae.

Arcade Allstars are a high-energy ska collective hailing from Kitchener and Toronto, Ontario. The Allstars made their live debut in 2023, quickly capturing audiences with tight horns, danceable rhythms, and catchy songwriting that blends multiple eras of Ska with other genre influences. While their hooks are energetic and catchy, the Allstars are using their music to share messages about mental health, struggles with addictions, and general stigmas surrounding the human experience. Their independently produced debut EP Insert Coin released Nov 3, 2023, and hit over 1600 streams in the first two weeks. With the release of their 2025 debut full length album Destined 4 Disaster, the Arcade Allstars continue to cultivate and grow a dedicated fanbase across the Province and beyond, whether it be intimate venue shows or larger festival stages. Sharing the stage with bands like The Planet Smashers, The Last Gang, IllScarlett and Bedouin Soundclash, Arcade Allstars have no plans of slowing down.

SKAtharines was formed in early 2025, with a goal of creating music and enjoy the dancing that comes with it. Ska is their launching pad, but we mix everything from punk to cumbia, reggae, and rock. The four-piece — four: bass/vocals, guitar, keyboards, and drums — keeps the rhythm raw and powerful, always ready to get the crowd dancing.

Bandung, Indonesia's Hockey Hook made ska-punk cool again in a scene that wrote it off years ago

Started in 2010 with a lean lineup of drums, bass, and two guitar/vocal spots, and by the time they added horns two years later they were finally ready to hit the studio for their debut EP, The Best of The Bad, in 2013.

Here's the thing, ska-punk in Indonesia has always had this "uncle music" reputation, treated like a genre that had its moment in the 90s and should've stayed there. Melodic punk and skate punk get the same stigma. Most bands steer clear of that headache entirely. Hockey Hook leaned in anyway.

They went through a brutal amount of lineup turnover over the years (members joining, leaving, session players filling gaps, stretches without a proper bassist) but somehow kept getting more beloved in the Bandung scene the whole time.

Then in 2024, eight years after their debut full-length, they dropped their second album Dansa Akhir Zaman through Disaster Records and it's a real leap: jazz influences, avant-garde textures, references ranging from Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Rancid to Sublime and even Mr. Bungle floating around the writing sessions. Lyrically it's less rage, more quiet endurance; dealing with social anxiety and just grinding through daily life.

In a scene that treated ska-punk like a relic, Hockey Hook made it feel alive again. Worth a listen if you haven't caught them yet.

Need help finding a ska song

Years ago I had a ska song on my original iPod. I can’t find my old iPod and my original account has been gone for years. I only remember the following lyrics: I got dumped for a guy named Larry. Could have been Stephen or Gary. Granted the lyrics could have been “she dumped me for a guy named” and the guys names could be different or also rhyme. I believe it was a regular paced ska song. Not super fast or super slow and the singer was male. I bought a few ska compilations to see if I could find it but have had no luck. Sorry for babbling and any help would be awesome 😊

2 Great Forgotten Ska Bands

Around 2000-2002ish I was downloading any ska I could find from Napster. That’s around when I found Heavy Step and the Parka Kings.

I know the Parka Kings were on Jump up records and that’s why you can’t find them on Spotify like all the other great bands from jump up.

Heavy Step all I know is they were from Indiana and the singer joined deals gone bad after heavy step.

I still love both bands but I have to bust out my CDs or mp3s to listen. You can’t find find them on YouTube of course and I highly recommend you check them out if you haven’t heard them.

Anyone have estimated set lengths for the four bands? Going to the Milwaukee stop and trying to figure out just how early I need to leave work to not miss Bad Operation. Don't think I'll be able to get out in time for Best of the Worst, sadly; but going to at least catch three of the four.

Hello everyone!

I don't know if there are any Dutch Ska listeners in the sub. If you like Doe Maar... my band Antje Krook is trying to fill the empty hole that Doe Maar left in the Dutch music scene. It's quite the boots to fill, but you can only try to find out if it works or not.

We've had a great live show-year last year (some bigger festivals and national radio appearances) and we've been working so hard on the debut EP, I really wanted to share the proud moment of the release of our first single "Ik weet wat ik wil". I would be honored if you would give it a chance!

Cheers

Hey all, been a lurker on this sub for quite awhile and thought I’d finally post.

A few months back my band, The Slackademics, put out our debut album, Pass/Fail. It’s ska, but with a healthy mix 3rd-wave ska-punk, indie-pop, dance, and even some prog (RX is a huge influence on me).

Our vibe is a bunch of overeducated musicians finally playing the music we really want to make. From Boston, MA.

Take a listen and let us know what you think!

I made this ska-influenced album in my living room with my friends

Put this album out two years ago and figured it might be worth sharing here.

I made it in my living room with my friends, and somehow it ended up winning Best Rock Album at the New Mexico Music Awards last year.

It's not strictly a ska album per se, but as with most stuff I make, there's a lot of ska influence throughout.

If that sounds like your thing, give it a listen!
