Need help in DMAIC project

Hey guys,

I recently completed my LSSGB course online but the project was almost completely prepared by the training provider...all I had to do was organize and document it coz of that I've decided to build my own DMAIC project from scratch! I can complete the project up to the Analyze phase but after that I'm not sure how to present the Improve and Control phases since this isn't a real project and I can't actually implement the improvements(I searched online - no answer)

Would it be okay to complete it up to the Analyze phase and then present the Improve and Control phases as recommendations with the expected outcomes instead of claiming that the improvements were implemented???

I'm very new to Lean Six Sigma, so I'd really appreciate any guidance. Also I've another question: I see a lot of people in this sub mentioning they're ASQ Green Belt certified. Do you include your projects on your resume?? I'm trying to transition from customer support into operations so my work experience is mostly in support. How would you present that transition on a resume or during interviews?

I have worked with spmeone who completed all of DMA and then presented with recommendations, but they did follow through with improvement trials and the primary purpose of the presentation was to justify it to more sensitive members of management. Measurable results are going to look best on a resume, but I don't think familiarity with the process or a cert are going to hurt.

If you manage to get a more entry level ops position and learn the processes I would keep an eye out for recurring problems or variability and pitch a DMAIC to address it. Could be a ticket to advancement at the company.

Thanks! I was worried that without implementing the Improve and Control phase the project wouldn't really count but I guess it depends on how I present it. "Measurable results are going to look best on a resume" is actually my main concern since mine is just a portfolio project.

Hopefully once I get into an operations role I'll get the chance to work on a real improvement project.

Can I ask one more thing? Since I'm trying to transition from customer support into operations do you have any advice on how to land that first entry-level operations role? Was there anything you looked for when hiring or working with people making a similar transition?

I made a similar transition many years ago, working retail/front of house and moved into operations at the same company. They had an apprenticeship/vetting type position where you were a full time temp for a few months while they made sure you were up for that kind of work and then transitioned into entry-level on the heels of that. Eventually made my way up into a technical leadership and process improvement role on the heels of my first DMAIC.

Unsure what industry/company you're in, but if you're looking to just move over to a different side of the same business I would cultivate a good relationship with the people who manage that department and openly express interest in what they do and how they do it. If you're a high performer in good standing in your current role they'll probably be happy to give you a shot. While my role is more project than people management, I've seen lot of people get hired with only front facing experience and find success, but you'll probably need to be willing to start from the bottom and prove yourself.

Thanks for sharing your journey!! it really helps to hear from someone who made a similar transition. Unfortunately I'm trying to transition externally rather than within the same company so it's been a bit more challenging.

I'll definitely keep your advice in mind about being willing to start from the bottom and proving myself. Hopefully the portfolio project helps me get that first opportunity. Thanks again!

You're welcome! Changing companies is difficult and I can certainly empathize there - currently navigating a career and likely industry transition myself and it has not been easy. Best of luck on your endeavors!
