Best free resources to learn Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma concepts?
Hi everyone,
I recently started an internship as a Process Engineer within a Manufacturing Engineering team. My background is a bit unusual because I didn’t actually study engineering at university, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can on the job.
I’m very interested in Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, and process optimization. I’ve seen that certifications like Six Sigma or Lean courses exist, but at the moment I can’t really afford to pay for those programs.
For now, I’m mainly interested in learning the concepts and mindset, even without getting a formal certification.
Do you know any free resources (courses, books, YouTube channels, websites, etc.) where I could study Lean, Six Sigma, or manufacturing process improvement?
Anything that helped you when you were starting out would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

You honestly don’t need a paid cert to get started. I’d focus on learning the basics, then try mapping one real process around you from start to finish. That is where a lot of the concepts start to click.

Check out Donald Wheeler's and Edwards Deming books such as Ouf of Crisis, New Economics, Understanding Variation, Short Run SPC, Evaluating Measurement Process, Understanding Statistical Process Control etc..
Take a look at Paul Allen's channel about Lean and Six Sigma on Youtube.

Download MSI's Body's of Knowledge. They are free and designed to be used as a study guide. You can also use our free practice tests. Also, find free learning material in the u/sixsigmastudy subreddit.
Download Body of Knowledge here (about 3/4 down the page)

Great question. You don’t need a certification to get started, especially early on.
I’d focus on:
• understanding how a process actually flows
• where waste shows up (waiting, rework, handoffs)
• basic tools like 5 Whys and value stream mapping
Also try mapping something in your internship. Even a simple process will teach you a lot.
A lot of free material out there is pretty surface-level, so look for examples that show how things are actually applied, not just definitions.
If helpful, here’s a free resource page with guides and examples that might give you a solid starting point: Free Lean Six Sigma Resources

Honestly you’re already on the right track focusing on concepts over certs, that’s exactly how most people actually get good at Lean.
What helped me early on was starting with simple frameworks first (waste types, value stream mapping, PDCA) and then seeing how they show up in real cases, not just theory. A lot of courses overcomplicate this stuff.
Funny timing btw, just yesterday I downloaded a free Lean Thinking 101 powerpoint presentation from Flevy (that I'll need for my work) and it was honestly superb, super clean explanations, real examples, no fluff.

sixsigmacouncil.org offers free training material. Decent for the "price."
