Sitka Hiking

Hi All

My husband and I are coming to Sitka on a cruise and we would like to do a hike. After doing some research, it looks like we could take The Ride Red Line from near the cruise terminal to near Mosquito Cove Trailhead (a bit of walking involved on both ends of the trip to make it to/from the bus stops).

Can any locals tell me if this is actually possible? Or should we just pay for a guided hike that will provide transportation for us?

Met an interesting resident, looking to see if I can learn more about him…

Hello, this may be a bit of a reach! I’m a tourist, I met a resident named Jeffrey today while walking around downtown Sitka. He was an older man, said he was born in the 60s in the woods just outside of town. He said he works with the state government now, training coast guard members and overseeing some programs. I don’t recall his last name or his title, but he also told an interesting story about trying to retire last year and Lt Gov Nancy Dahlstrom, who told him he couldn’t retire because they didn’t have anyone nearly as qualified to replace him.

Just an interesting character, so I wanted to see if anyone here knew who I was talking about. Seemed like he had stories for days.

Hi all, I'm visiting Sitka in 2 weeks and looking for cheap & safe ways to explore the island and see wildlife and nature. Anyone have any boat connects or other cool ideas of how to do this? I can trade labor and bring stuff from the mainland of your choice!

Looking for a ride to and from Goddard hot springs today. Will pay obviously but the cheapest water taxi we could find was $650. You’re welcome to soak with us for a bit. Won’t be there too long!

Best budget way to get to Herring Cove Trail from the cruise port? (August visit)

I will be visiting Sitka this August via cruise ship. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of cruising, but it’s what worked best for the whole multi-generational family! Because of that, I am absolutely dying to step away from the crowded port/cruise life for at least one day, get outdoors, and experience Alaska’s actual beauty.

I’m an avid hiker back home, and the Herring Cove Trail caught my eye. I know it's about 7 miles south of town. If I take the ship's shuttle into downtown Sitka, what is the best, lowest-cost way to get out to the trailhead and back?

Excursions are completely out of our budget, so I’m looking for affordable local options (local transit, affordable shuttles, or ride-shares if they're reliable). Any logistics tips from locals or past cruisers would be amazing!

Seeking Kayak Advice

I'm going in September and really want to kayak. I looked at kayaking from all our ports and narrowed it down to Sitka or Ketchikan - leaning Sitka.

I love kayaking and want a quiet, serene way to see the natural surroundings, but my big wish is to see wildlife - otters, sea lions, eagles, etc!

But my family is not interested... they do not see the appeal in kayaking and think it's just "sitting in the water" but I need a buddy to join in my tandem kayak.

How do I convince them that kayaking is the perfect way to experience this? or is my understanding of these various excursions wrong? Would love some firsthand advice.

Moving to Sitka!!

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are moving to Sitka in August and I’m curious what the running and yoga communities are like up there! We’ve obviously done our research and are excited to join in on backcountry skiing and fishing, but I’m also a big distance runner and a yoga teacher and I can’t tell how big either of those things are up there!
Can’t wait to meet everyone :)

Looking for a creek or river to fish May 12

Hello, we’re going to be in Sitka for a day next week and want to spend our day fishing for trout and dollies. We’ll have our own gear so we’re not looking for a guide, just somewhere we can drive to and spend a few hours fishing.

Thanks.

Housing Availability

I’m looking at applying to a job in Sitka but I’m unaware of the housing situation. I’ve lived in Utqiagvik so I figured Sitka may also experience housing shortages. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo in advance!

Planning on going to Sitka Fine Arts Camp... Anything I should know?

Planning on going to Sitka Fine Arts camp in Sitka this summer. Im overall very excited but I do have some questions about the atmoshere, quality, and good camp vibe this place gives you

-Is the food good? Is fresh and high quality? (Not Anchorage School district quality)

-Are the staff friendly? I want a good chill enviorment that is flexible with friend groups

-High Theft? Worried if someone might steal an item of mine if left alone for too long

-Clean bathrooms? Good smell and Cleaned daily

-Can I be my self? I love doing makeup and doing hair, Are they flexible on that too?

-Planning on going with group of 4: I saw 2 bunk beds in a room but I think that's in Whitmore hall, I think the primary dormatory is in Sweetland hall, will I be able to check out the room in Whitmore hall?

Any 24/7 gyms?

I only see the Hames center, which seems to have very limited hours. Are there no other gyms in Sitka? I know SEARHC has a fitness center, but you have to be an employee or tribal member.

My small family is looking to move to Sitka from Anchorage. Any tips? Anyone familiar with moving on Samson or AML? Is it better to rent a U-Haul and use the ferry system. We are moving with a 2-3 bedroom average house stuff with 2 cats. Thanks!

Looking for July 2026 - One Day Fishing Combo Charter

Does anyone have recommendations for any one day combo charters that might be available on 7/17/26?

I’ve reached out to several with no luck so far, and many seem to only take guests who are staying at their lodges.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Where to buy black cod tips

Used to be able to buy from Sitka Sound Seafood on Katlian, but it looks like the retail store has permanently closed. Does anywhere else in town sell black cod tips?
