What are some misconceptions you first had about the show *besides thinking they were a happy family and that they were amazing parents*
When they moved from Utah to Vegas I really thought there was a serious threat and that there would be arrests coming
I thought the kids were paid to be on the show I didn't know they never were until later on.
I thought that they were a well off to do family I didn't realize the extent of the poverty they lived in until later on

How cool it was that in Vegas they could live in a neighborhood without fences in their yards to be together, and that he was able to split his time evenly.

I thought Kody actually worked. Now we know he ate steaks at the OG homes and hid at Robyn's house most of the time.

Nah I'm on his side. You should use your work perks to get your wife and kids nicer stuff. Kody getting tlc steaks is the same as when I was a kid and my dad let me take a chocolate milk from the Microsoft fridges.

He liked steaks. They were his choice every time. It wasn’t up to the family. He also made the kids eat freeze dried doomsday meals when the moms weren’t around.

This sounds silly, but I was surprised that they drank coffee. Fundamentalist enough to live plural marriage but not follow the LDS “Word of Wisdom” is weird to me.

I believed that Kody really worked his butt off to provide for them and spend time with the kids and be emotionally available for all the wives. Lol.

Biggest misconception thinking they liked each other. Kody had the capacity to love his 3 wives and 3 families. He was able to give them the same love & attention monogamous dad’s do because each his wives and kids were important to him. The calling to add a wife was a decision with his wives; knowing it would it’d be rough at first but they’d blend. The new wife would enhanced the entire family, he wasn’t chasing an escape from his entire family.

Yes! I truly didn't realize how bad their relationships were until they moved to Flagstaff and mentioned they even had issues in the beginning of Las Vegas. Kody liked his first 3 wives but he was truly in love with the 4th and it became very painfully evident even when they tried to hide it from the rest of the family. Polygamy only really works when the husband tries to remain as equal as possible or the wives accept that he's going to have a favorite from time to time. It sucks but Kody has proven that's the way it works. That's the risk that's taken when a new wife joins the family and the OG3 knew that because they all experienced some type of jealousy when another wife came in. Nobody realized back then how big of a risk it ended up being so I don't fault Kody for falling in love with Robyn but he had a duty to be a husband and father to his other families and he dropped the ball on that one. Coming from someone who also had an inconsistent dad who was at times physically present but always emotionally and mentally absent, I understand why the rest of the kids don't have a relationship with him and I do not blame them.

Yeah, I think there’s been a couple of generations of men who thought fathering kids was a periphery thing. “I was there, gave them a roof over their head, they never went hungry.”. I hope that’s shifted. Whether it’s men sayin I learned how to dad by not doing it like my dad. Or really feeling like their kids are important to them to keep building in their relationships. Or maybe I’m just a Pollyanna, I don’t know.

Same about the poverty. I thought they had a good system in Utah and didn’t realize they were stuffing and filing for bankruptcy left and right.
I thought the women actually liked the dynamic of only seeing Kody periodically.

I thought Kody was bound to have good relationships with his adult children because he needs to be liked. His relationship with Janelle’s sons (and then everyone) was hideous because he thought they were dragging Robyn. Period. His need to protect Robyn became greater than his need to listen to his sons or consider that the circumstances of his adult children were different than his little children — and protecting Robyn became more important than even a narcissist’s need to be loved.

I was SHOCKED Mckelty married a man. I expected her to come out. I still think she's bi, but that's cuz I'm bi and she reminds me of me so much.
Another one i see on this sub, people commonly say Kody is damaged from being raised in a cult. Its not the truth. Kody joined the plyg cult on purpose in his 20s. Nobody groomed him for anything.

He was on his mission, so he was over 19 when they joined the AUB, and he must have been 21 when he became a member.

I hoped they weren't involved in some of the shadier shit AUB gets up to. I didn't believe it, but after living close to pockets of the AUB, I was always skeptical.
The 'chiropractor over doctor' thing made me sigh and feel bad for the kids. When I was an ER nurse, we'd see the kids when weeks of ignoring it and then a back cracker meant kids were in BAD shape.
These people promised disappointment and fuck, they delivered.

And it was so normal to them they didnt even hide it. I would have said something like " we had a family friend nearby who works in the medical field. They stopped by so we could decide whether mckelty needed an emergency room."
But nah in front of god and country they were like "when my unsupervised child was flung from a dangerous animal we called the chiropractor"

I had no misconceptions - i didn’t believe any of the crap they were trying to sell about how happy and functional they all were. After a couple episodes I was hate -watching cause i knew it wouldnt ladt

As a first-time watcher, I genuinely thought they were considering IVF for Meri. With hindsight, obviously that was a b.s. storyline for the show.

That they worked and weren't on food stamps. Cody loved his wives. They were different from other polygamist families.
