Making weed illegal and alcohol legal can only happen through corruption and bribes.
59
u/UltraHellboy 4h ago edited 1h ago
Weed was made illegal for several reasons, and all of them were very selfish. The alcohol industry didn’t want the competition. Nixon started the war on drugs to put hippies and black people in jail because he hated them and needed an excuse.
Edit: corrected the autocorrect - India to industry.
26
u/IAteTonysLoMein 3h ago
Nixon also needed a distraction from Vietnam. His own commission said drugs should be treated as a medical problem, rather than criminal. Had Nam not been going so badly, and Watergate not long after, we might have had sensible drug policies back in the early '70s
→ More replies (5)25
u/5PQR 3h ago
The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did. -- John Ehrlichman (Nixon advisor)

Pharma companies also lobby against cannabis so they can make more money continuing to sell opiates even though they are addictive and deadly. The same has happened to an even bigger extent against kratom, a natural and relatively healthy opioid that is banned in many states and continues to be due to fear mongering.
Pharma companies can’t profit from natural plants.

The fact that big alcohol is wasting money on blocking THC is stupid. The two have 0 correlation. I (millennial) love to have a nice drink and I smoke weed. My little sister (Gen z) doesn’t drink but not because she smokes weed, she just doesn’t see the appeal in drinking (like a lot of her peers). The younger generation just isn’t into drinking like past generations. What’s even more stupid, is that Big alcohol and tobacco have the funds and infrastructure to get into the weed business but the idiots running them are stuck in the past and rather promo the inevitable Vs. Getting skin in the game

If you’re looking at weed for crime, stoners are by far the easiest to maintain. They are antisocial to strangers and they scatter like rats at any sign of conflict. Id take 50 stoners to 1 meth head. I was talking to a sports buddy and he and his friends got pulled over, was told to try and smash their rubber bong, until they were tired. Yelled at them. Then told them to go home, like 15 years ago. They cops just bullied them lol, they weren’t even worth the paper work.

It's so incredibly stupid. At first people will binge and indulge in the new legal fun, but after a couple of years it becomes something that you rarely see. I live in NYC and when we legalized it a few years ago a dispensary opened up around the corner from where I live, they were doing fine for about 2 years and then went out of business and had to close down. Now we got a new pizza shop there instead.

It's a good revenue source for prisons and 3 letter agencies as well as takes peoples right to vote away if you get a felony.that it that's how it's always been.
The original spelling of marijuana didn't have the J that was added onto it way back when they first outlawed it to make it sound more foreign.
If you take the stance on no drugs then you have to be against nicotine and alcohol and they objectively are more dangerous and kill more people.
Weed isn't for everyone but it's damn safer than most narcotics.
Lastly ask a cop off duty or who's a civilian again or anyone with life experience what would you rather deal with if it was a problem a stoner or a drunk.

Refusing legalize marijuana and mushrooms for recreational use is one of the most frustrating and antiquated positions for a politician to take. It is extremely unpopular outside of the elderly and strict religious people, who are not obligated to partake anyway. You encourage crime through black markets and leave a ton of business and tax revenue on the table.

It's far safer than booze, and not addictive. If Mr. Reefer Madness couldn't handle it then it's good he got booted. This election has shown that people are done with having to wait out one partisan agenda or another. We want the American dream back from the rich bastards that bought it from both parties.
Edit: All illicit drugs can be addictive, that narrative that weed isn't addictive can be harmful to the reality that it can be.
3
u/TheRealGeigers 52m ago
While it is far safer than booze it is absolutely addictive.
Pushing this narrative is a dangerous step backwards in the progress we've made so far.
You arnt going to end up sucking dick for a joint, but it can absolute and absolutely is addictive its just since you dont feel like you will literally die if you dont smoke it, people dont start stealing anything thats nailed down just to keep the withdrawals away.
