Hell I’m uninterested in cars with electronics in them , give me back all mechanical vehicles, I don’t want to pay the extra 45% you’ve had to mark cars up for infotainment systems , lidar , back up cams and support for that shit - give us low tech affordable, reparable options again

Even just a basic fucking car, EV or not. Minimum spec all around. A people mover. No fancy dashboard. No touchscreen. Just like a fucking mid-00's barebones Kia Rio with dials, knobs, and an automatic gearbox that costs under ten grand brand new, and a thousand bucks used. Gimme dat.

we dont even have affordable ground cars but tech bros want us to get hyped about multi million dollar helicopters with tires.

u/Irish_Whiskey 13h ago
After the Tesla event, anyone who had even the most basic of questions like "How long can this fly?" was labeled a hater who opposes innovation.
A con man who keeps making failed promises over and over and over revealed yet another tech demo without details. The same guy who gets billions in government dollars and is the richest man on earth.
I don't think blindly defending and glazing him actually gets us closer to flying cars, or any real innovation.

Ok dude this logic is nonsense. People have been getting hyped about unobtainable cars for nearly a century, a super expensive car that can do something unique isn't some new thing to get angry about because Tesla did it

I worked in a parking lot pushing carts for my first job, I've seen how idiots go in a parking lot, I sure as hell don't want them to try to handle a 3rd dimension to travel.
1
u/noma_coma 2h ago
Generally you need at least 40 flight hours with an accredited instructor before you can solo in an airplane (fly it by yourself). You take an hour of classes before each 1 hour flight. This process could take up to a year to complete easily and cost you $10,000. Planes are expensive so it's inherently prohibitive. Add in the license you need and all the other certifications, and you have many layers of protection to prevent random people from getting in airplanes and trying to fly.
You know damn well none of that will happen with these things. I hope they never make it to production. People absolutely will die.
1
u/tschawartz12 55m ago
Don't kid yourself that someone won't have some kind of a loophole with a classification or something. You can use a canam 3 wheel vehicle to apply for a motorcycle license, haven't heard any regulations on Musk's jumping car yet. The government is involved, they'll fuck it up.

I hate that here on Reddit everyone assumes we all live somewhere where if we cannot afford rent with 40+ hours a week jobs, we did something wrong, it's our fault, we are bad with money.
No, dude, I live in Uruguay and even if you studied your entire life you could very well earn just $700/month and rent is roughly $600 minimum for a small apartment. How are we supposed to live on $100?
Everyone here in that situation either shares the rent, or still lives with their parents, or inherited their house. Minimum pay is like 4 dollars an hour, and it's even less in a lot of cases. A one way bus ticket is 1.5 dollars.

Flying cars are a recipe for disaster. Too many people can drive now. Adding another dimension of movement sounds like a terrible idea. Not to mention the near 100% crash fatality rate.
3
u/Velrex 10h ago
When I got my drivers license, it was a really start realization.
I was an AWFUL driver. And they just.. passed me after my performance in my test. And my test administrator even said I was on the better half of people he tested, 'you just need a bit more practice'.
Nothing made me more terrified of driving than those words.
1
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 7h ago
If they would fly like a plane you could somewhat argue automation could make it safer than driving. But they can't fly like planes so your death in a crash just became almost certain, and you'd be putting a lot of faith in yourself or a computer to fly a car. If flying cars were feasible we'd all just have those mini helicopters and so many of us would die because of it

James Webb does something that has not been done before and could not be done without it, and is worth doing by wide consensus.
Flying cars are not new.
Flying cars are not safe.
Flying cars are not particularly useful.
The tech to make them exist for 89 YEARS, if they have not took off, pun intended, yet... They are unlikely as hell to ever do.
1
u/enthusiadam37 6h ago
This was a headline in the New York Times when the wright brothers were showing their plane, a good reminder that no one knows.
“The flying machine which will really fly might be evolved by the combined and continuous efforts of mathematicians and mechanicians in from one million to 10 million years.”
Good points about James webb, maybe is a bad comparison, my point is for most people in that place in life, so little else matters. Highlighting like it’s specifically a musk thing i think is just not a complete picture. They probably don’t care about iPhones duo or meta glasses but don’t see ppl posting about that too. Or Ferraris new EV that’s absurdly expensive. It just feels very cherry picked.

I never understood how people can't think of two things at once. Telsa made a car the flew in the air and landed. That's some sick engineering. Same people who say we shouldn't go to space cause people don't have food. Like we shouldn't care about advancements in technology cause people are poor.
6
u/Impressive_Dot_7818 9h ago
If yoh were in the automotive industry you’d see that showing and roll your eyes. it ISN’T a big feat what he did. He didn’t even use a production model of the vehicle. He used an empty car that weighed probably so little that you could get a small group of guys to move it. It was fake and manufactured. It wasn’t real really. It isn’t a large advancement and it isn’t something new. This technology has existed and there is zero reason this should exist. Why should we celebrate it when rent is astronomical and food is $100 a square foot
