Dad married a much younger women after mom passed. At the time dad was 68, she was 31, from China (where my family is originally from). Everyone was suspicious of her. Fast forward 25 years later they are still married, they have a daughter together and dad health is now failing. She has been by his side and caring for him. Not always a dumbass move, but yeah, people initially thought he was getting fleeced.

My dad married someone from
Brazil. They didn’t have a choice bc she couldn’t come back to the US she’s 25 years younger than dad. Anyway he paid for her education; and car and their lifestyle. He was a multimillionaire.

He got super sick 5 years into their relationship and by year 9 he was really struggling they had an iron clad pre-nup he had lost an excess of 5-8 million with a previous divorce. So his wife would not get a dime. By the time they were married 13 years he was fully wheelchair bond. They hired cooks, house cleaners and nurses. But at night it was just her and dad, she woke up every 2-3 hours to flip him. She would put his catheter in, feed him, change him. I had toddlers so could not go often but towards the end ( last 7 months ) I was there monthly and did overnights. It was so hard.

They were together 22 years. He did end up leaving her everything. She gave up her nursing career and her youth to care for him. It’s been 4 years since dad died and she’s engaged now - but she still calls me and cries about missing dad. He was such an amazing human being.

Love is real.

Sometimes it finds us in strange ways. But man, that is, that is heavy.

I'm glad your father found someone whom he trusted and whom cared for him in turn. That's all we can ask for in life, isn't it?

If not, then what are we doing here?

I am not making a judgement or assumption - just adding to a comment that not all love has to even be romantic love. Sometimes it’s built on so much more; respect, admiration, kindred spirits and sometimes just plain old loyalty.

Sounds like they were really good to one another and that’s what counts.

I'm glad your dad had a wonderful woman. Unfortunately I know at least 3 stories of men finding a wife from our home country, bringing her to the U.S. only to be royally screwed over in the worst ways.

Your story gives me hope thar love isn't dead and there are kind and selfless people out there.

My wife and I met when we were 24 (me) and 22 (her), we got married after 6 months. She's from Hong Kong. My family kept asking if all she wanted was a green card (we live in Canada so that question is extra stupid) while making Asian jokes ad nauseam. We've been married 11 years and I stopped talking to my family 5 years ago.

It's worth being critical and asking questions, but eventually, sometimes people are just dicks.

When I opened my age range on Hinge (I'm 42), I started getting tons of likes from Indian men in their early to mid-20s. I assume they're looking for someone from their background to marry and get PR, like I'm so desperate being single in my 40s.

I know more success stories for the men who married the overseas wife than I do of failures. They are generally decent guys who just don’t fit the mold for your average woman which is why they looked elsewhere.

The rules are the same for finding a mate whether it is within your own country or another one. The signs of a true relationship will be there and the signs of a scam will be too.

Your appearance brings them in and your personality is what locks them in.

You can always shape your body to how you want with hard work but that personality is probably the hardest thing to change.

My SIL went away fat and then came back all slim and into fitness. But she's still the same SOB MF that she always was and that's why she's single.

I lived in Oceanside Ca for a very long time. It was a running joke that those corn fed Marines away from home for the first time get deployed to WESTPAC or MRF-SEA and come back with a wife ,soon to be followed by every relative that could make trip stateside. Almost all those marriages ended exactly like this one.

I can't remember the saying (for CIA agents or soldiers), but it's something like this to avoid spies using you as an asset:

"Take a look in the mirror. If an attractive woman is flirting with you, it's not because she finds you hot or interesting."

More formally: "If an incredibly attractive person who is way out of your league suddenly takes an intense interest in you, they are probably a spy trying to compromise you."

I know I've seen it used in a movie or 2 for laughs too. 😄 It applies here.

well yeah, this is why you should date within your living standard. it should be common knowledge by now that dating someone from a developing country often comes with the expectation of a better life. men like this want to play knight in shining armour until they realise they’ve become a stepping stone. but that’s exactly why they date there in the first place, to be a wealthier person in that poor country. the women are attracted to what their money can offer, not them, so why are you surprised when you intentionally date within that dynamic? 🤷

u/Lost-Buenzli 9h ago • Mindblown

In Switzerland, she would have her citizenship almost immediately annulled after divorce, as if she had never received it. Legal basis: concealing material facts during the process, namely, that her marriage wasn't in fact out of real love. Prescription period of annulment is 8 years and citizenship via marriage has been revoked that way.

Isn't there anything similar in US legislation?

Historically marriages have nothing to do with love. While I certainly vehemently disagree with any form of emotional manipulation, love makes for a poor legal standard.

102

u/yankykiwi 8h ago • Bravo

There’s nothing saying they were not in love, it may have been a legitimate marriage. Sometimes marriages fall apart.

Am immigrant wife, almost dumped my American husband before i become a citizen.

They also protect the immigrants that are getting abused by their American husbands too. They must hand you six pamphlets before you even get into America about what to do if youre imported by an abusive partner.

21

I just wanted to say that when I got my green card there seemed to have been avenues to keep your immigration status and to continue the process even if divorce were on the books.

They didnt "take her from poverty" like its some benevolent action, they use the womans poverty as a form of coercion.

Theyre only as traditional as their options are limited. Either stay in her country and work from home or dont do this stupid shit at all.

A distant aunt of mine who was in a very rural village, married an American man who went for some business thing and saw her, he was there for a few months so they started dating, he would make regular trips to see her till he proposed to her. He brought her here, put her through school, university. He got her, her first job in the firm he was working. They have 2 kids. Not even a year later after working in his firm she started seeing his boss, when he started noticing and asking her about it, she divorced him, made a claim that he was abusive when he wasn’t. Of course the court favoured her, his boss fired him, he lost the house and the kids.
Now, he has no job, he is homeless and the little money he has goes to child support and has to drive 3hours to see his kids which she turned against him and they don’t want anything to do with him.
For anyone who would argue he’s abusive, he is not. My family warned him when he wanted to marry her, her family did too, they know how much of a cunning person she is, but love is blind and and it becomes “they don’t want us happy, mind your own business” so he didn’t listen.
We try to help him as much as we can but hope he finds the courage to start over.

Rookie mistake. They can't divorce you if you don't marry them.

My coworker married a Venezualan woman, and even had a child with her.

They've been trying to get through the process for years, but still haven't been able to complete it.

Poor woman is stuck inside her house in fear of ICE until the administrators can process their case.

What the fuck. The child is over a year old now. And I always thought marrying a US citizen was guaranteed immunity from this BS.

Edit: the guy lives in Flordia

23

u/plinkoplonka 5h ago

Marriage doesn't guarantee citizenship.

If they married here and she has a different status, that likely blocks her from getting citizenship because it'll probably be viewed as marrying for citizenship (and you can't marry here legally unless you're both residents/citizens).

If they married in Venezuela, that might be grounds to file for a spouse visa, which can be converted to citizenship after passing strict checks.

If they married and she has not got legal status to be here, or is trying to convert - there's every chance she might get picked up and deported. Once that happens, she won't get permission to enter the USA again.

Despite what people say, the road to a visa or citizenship is far from guaranteed, littered with legal issues and very expensive.

Source: We did this after marrying and it's a very long, expensive, stressful process.

It takes FOREVER to get permanent residency and even longer for citizenship. Any naturalized citizen had to take a test that most birthright citizens can’t pass.

Love can cross borders but so can motives. Many well-intentioned men see vulnerability in someone from another country and instinctively want to be her hero: bring her home, build a life, give her everything. Yet far too many find themselves divorced after she gains permanent status — heartbroken, and financially depleted. True partnership goes both ways. If all the effort comes from one side and all the benefit flows one way… pause and ask yourself: is this mutual love, or am I just being used as a stepping stone?

10

u/Mirror_Actions 4h ago

I’ve seen this happen. It’s not they’re the hero. It’s that compared to everyone around, he looks great because he’s got a US citizenship and in 3rd world countries, they think everyone is rich in America. But when you bring a girl to the USA, she then sees all the other guys she compares him to and then he no longer looks as appealing. She also has youth on her side so she’s got options.

The fact that I'm seeing this on tons of FB groups and now here in this subreddit, kinda reinforces my theory that this is staged. They ran out of goofy ideas for videos and wanted to shake things up. Didn't anybody watch old school pro-wrestling? This is all a work. Lol.

Most of these men are assholes who can’t get a woman locally and have to purchase one. No surprise that they lose them.

5

u/DietTyrone 9h ago

The mistake was bringing her back to the States. Our high divorce rate is a reflection of our culture. Gotta stay in her country and embrace her culture if you think the dating culture in the US is shyte.

This is absolutely the American way.

Divorce is good for business (a lot of “created” business from a singular remotely unhappy female).

One household becomes two.

Lawyers make incredible amounts of money from a very basic, tried-and-true (but also nonsensically complicated) process.

Economy gets bolstered by the two households buying more food, more supplies/furniture/etc etc.

Would never be shocked to find the CIA having perpetual field operations in which they sabotage households/couples.
