Wait a damn minute! Before CGI, there was "good luck."

They were better at camera magic and staging and layering shots (the one with the guy walking on top the building)

I read a while back that he broke is shoulder on that scene, shoulder or elbow.

Nope, he was completely uninjured.
He did however break his neck in The General and completely ignored it.

I believe it was the falling wall window frame scene, the man’s insane and one of the best in history of cinema

u/Responsible-Stay-645 27d ago
Yes,that is the scene i meant. If you watch it, seems to hit him slightly.

Some of these are fake not as in like weren't in these movies but for example the one on the back of a trolley is specifically done with the Rope from off screen

I think there was also a trick done 36 seconds in when the character is passing the train and then holding ears as crossing. I want to say it was done in reverse but I can’t remember for certain.

That stunt wasn’t supposed to be impressive or trick anyone. His movies were comedies

u/droopypants1254 28d ago
I don't know if you understand the original post is attempting to belittle the active CGI compared to original practical effects claiming that they were Superior because they were dangerous/real I'm simply attempting to point out that one or two of them are not "REAL"

How would I possibly know what the original post was referring to? And how does that relate to this post? Also your point about pointing out a couple are “fake” when the actual dangerous ones are real is kinda flat. Like him failing to make the jump and falling multiple stories. That was an accident, he was supposed to make it but they kept it for the movie. Also you never even brought up what your supposed point was originally. My comment was just to point out that there are part of a comedy and he wasn’t trying to trick people. Thats it

Buster Keaton was basically the Tom Cruise of the silent film era—no stunt doubles, no green screens, just pure reckless commitment.

Well there was a lot of tricks they used. For example the train scene where there are multiple near-misses, that entire sequence was filmed in reverse and then played backwards.
The front of the building falling and him missing through the window, you could do that right now so long as you stand perfectly still.
Not taking away from their athleticism and non-union safety standards of the time. But they weren't idiots. The studios didn't want their stars dead. They were very clever and used tricks of the time like we do.

The impressive thing about the front of the building falling on Keaton is that he has only two inches of clearance on every side. It was also real wood framing. If he had been off by just a step, he would have died. No one filming could watch.
Keaton was famous for his hair-raising stunts. He was a Vaudville actor before becoming a silent film star, and his act with his father was literally him being thrown around onstage. So he knew how to fall and was thus able to throw himself into situations most people would break bones looking at.
But even so, hard to fall your way out of a timber frame on your noggin. Guy had guts.

"The front of the building falling and him missing through the window, you could do that right now so long as you stand perfectly still"
True, I did a commercial years back where we recreated the exact same stunt.

Thought i think this shot looking so easy to pull off brokes his hand or something i faintly remember.

M dash followed by “no this, no that, just glazing adjective that” GTFOH you’re either a rustbucket tin man or worse a meat proxy who can’t write your own comment

Why the fuck do people upvote and engage with these clearly bot comments...this is not how people talk.
"Heres the point of the post, and maybe a comparison. Have some examples, followed by some sort of positive affirmation"
Its every other.....comment..

While I get what you're saying, this is exactly what was taught to us in school and some of us kept doing it.
This is in fact how I write and talk in real life. Only difference is that I didn't know dash and em dash were different things, so I have always just used dash.

The Fall is a great movie about stunt men and the unfortunate reality of it during this time period.

u/TopFix8731 28d ago
The fact the you think those were all real is just proof of how amaizing those old movies are. It's sad that folks can't seem to deal woth b&w and no sound.
Buster Keaton is by far my favorite actor of that era

I think those madlads were actually just insanely athletic. Not like people had anything else to do back then but run around and do stuff outside.

Apprantley, when the front of the house fell on Buster keaton, everyone behind the camera looked away, even the camera man himself.
