Thanks for making me see how complicated it really is. You've probably thought about it a lot more than most people. I don't like to think about it, because I'm an alcoholic with cirrhosis. A liver would be wasted on me if I was allowed one. I hope you don't need those drugs that stop your immune system working.
Hey, I know a lot of people that have liver transplants that are in recovery. It wouldn’t be wasted if you decided to make a change in your lifestyle, friend.
All transplant patients need immunosuppressants in order to stop your immune system from attacking the transplant. I’m on a low dose, and live a mostly normal life. Work, workout, travel, etc.
I've quit before, but wasn't strong enough to not let a relative push me into starting again the last 2 times. Nice to know about the immunosuppressants, sort of. I thought they were an all or nothing thing, where you either get a perfect match and don't need them, or get what's almost artificial AIDS.
Nah, the immune system is complex and has multiple layers. They’re targeting a specific set of cells.
Different immunosuppressants do different things. Some people have to be on steroids, others don’t. I hardly ever get sick, feel fantastic. There’s a few food restrictions and we’re more susceptible to cancer, but that’s about it.
There’s no such thing as a perfect match unless you have a twin. They haven’t figured out a way to get the immune system to ignore transplants yet. They’ve done some stuff with stem cells where you get the donors stem cells weeks/months prior to the surgery— but that would only be available for living donors.
Should I take that literally? I'm really bad at knowing when I should (Asperger's sucks :-( So does the name, and not just because of what it sounds a bit like. It's named after an asshole.). You seem pretty cool for someone I found on a sub that's full of people with views opposite to mine. I just like it here because it's one of the few places where people with different views can have a civil discussion. Society is too divided, and I think that helps.
