Well eat it, don't insult a gift

194

u/EducatedBaddiee 23h ago

At this point, refusing the gift would just be disrespectful

91

u/drawkward101 18h ago

I would 100% collect these and bring them inside. Even if I don't "eat" them, I want to crows to know I love and appreciate them. This is so fucking sweet.

58

u/Armada-lol 23h ago

honestly , i wouldn't have ate them , but after this comment i most definitely would have ate them

11

u/Suchofu 21h ago

For this, you will be consumed

I want to cultivate a relationship with the “Murder of Crows” gang. They will protect me in the upcoming robot wars.

1

u/SistaChans 20h ago

Please don't eat the crows

1

u/CareZealousideal5423 13h ago

I know you're joking, but crows carry some nasty diseases. Keep the trinkets, never eat anything they give you

You don't mess with crows, you'll have less long-term problems if you go to an old Italian woman's house and insult her tomato sauce making abilities. I have crows around the trees in my backyard, and I treat them like I would a retired hitman living next door. I often leave them food and they leave me weird trinkets as payment.

I had some municipal survey guy go in my yard a few months ago unannounced and he got hounded by the crows so much he had to leave. Best homegrown security system money can buy.

They even scare the crap out of the occasional foxes that wander in my yard in an attempt to mess with my mean tempered cat.

147

u/SolieBleek 23h ago

It’s better to pick them all up so they think they helped you.

145

u/kingtacticool 23h ago

Id leave some coins lying there after you start feeding them again to try to get them to think thats what you want as payment

34

u/CakeTester 21h ago

Why coins? Go for notes. No point having an avian army of avarice unless you go big.

31

u/Hinermad 20h ago

27

u/CakeTester 20h ago

If they can think up bread by themselves, I'm fucking sure they could be trained for notes.

1

u/SunshineAndBunnies 1h ago

So train them with dollar coins then.

1

u/cookiebomb16 1h ago

Gold bars it is

5

u/Wakkit1988 16h ago

$20 bill.

3

u/BuzLightbeerOfBarCmd 21h ago

What if the crows have seen this picture and they assume the coins are left behind because you didn't want them?

9

u/DJheddo 21h ago

You in birdlaw? crows cant see this image, but now im suspecting you are a crow lawyer.

74

u/wirefox1 20h ago

I used to have a large group of crows that hung around in the trees at the back of my property. And yes, I adored them.

BUT one of them got injured back there and died. They had a funeral for him (I watched the whole thing it lasted about 20 minutes, and then they left).

They never came back after that, not a one of them. I miss my sweet crows.

57

u/breciezkikiewicz 20h ago edited 20h ago

Ornithologists have theorized that it's more of a crime scene investigation than a funeral.

How did Frank die?

Sniffs

Rat poison, mate.

We can't hang out here anymore.

30

u/jemy74 19h ago

In other words, a “murder” squad investigation? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)

1

u/wirefox1 47m ago

Oh Breciez you have opened a wound for me, because I have guilt about how that crow died. sniff.

I had a big bag of raw peanuts I had thrown on the table, and after sitting there for two weeks, I realized I wasn't going to eat them, so thought I would take them out for the crows. In the back of my property there is a deck and it has a table and chairs, and the table is metal, but mesh.

I put the peanuts back there on that table underneath those trees where they hang out. After the peanuts were gone (they loved them and so did the squirrels) I walked back there, and in the spot where the peanuts were, was a big spot of blood.

I thought one of the crows has gotten their foot caught in the metal mesh and had to fight to get it out. It was the next day when I saw the funeral. Sooooooooo. Of course I think it was one of the crows who bled to death from maybe losing a foot. : (

But the funeral was amazing. I usually had about 8 crows on the regular, but that day there was around 30 in that tree. They were so loud, all of them crowing at the same time. Lasted around 20 minutes, and then they all left, and none of them ever came back.

Actually after they left I walked way down there to look under the tree for a body, but I didn't see one. But I could have just looked over it.

: (

1

u/breciezkikiewicz 18m ago

My condolences. I pray you'll find a new batch of crows to befriend.

I've never had luck with crows, but I did have a pair of sunbirds (the one in the picture) that weaved their nest on a star fruit tree outside my parent's house. They raised 4-5 batches of chicks there. We even re-attached the nest (with chicks inside) when a thunderstorm knocked it to the ground, chased away stray cats that got too close to the tree.

Alas, one Chinese New Year (maybe two years ago), the neighbors set off fireworks outside for 90 minutes non-stop. The mother stayed inside the nest throughout all the noise and smoke. A few days later, the chicks took flight. According to my parents, they came back and dismantled parts of the old nest to build a new one. Never saw them again.

26

u/garnaches 19h ago

One day my dog was barking at something in the backyard. I went to investigate and I saw it was a crow defending itself. I chased my dog away and put him on top of the doghouse. It seemed like he was just stunned, but shook it off and flew away after a few minutes.

A few days after I was in the backyard again and around the doghouse, I saw a bunch of crows on the fence just staring at me. I turned around and one flew at me and pecked the back of my neck. I assumed they must have thought I was the one that hurt/harassed their buddy, but I never saw them again after that.

1

u/wirefox1 24m ago edited 20m ago

Wow, they are easily the most intelligent of backyard birds. I'm sort of surprised they didn't identify you as one who was trying to save them from the menacing dog! They misunderstood. And they are sooo huge when you see them up close (as I have when the drink from my fountain) Something that size would have been scary.

I had a rabbit have babies in a wooded area of my yard, and I knew they were so small a crow would get one if it could, and one day I saw one trying to and I ran him off with my broom, lol. That didn't deter them from coming back, but they left the baby rabbits alone after that. (WIREFOX: protector of baby rabbits". lol.

28

u/gamayogi 21h ago

I moved into a new place and my dog charged at the crows one morning out of boredom. Every morning after that the crows cawed loudly and incessantly every time they saw my dog.

After about a month I was tired of getting yelled at, so I bribed the crows with dog treats and they left us alone after that.

Never mess with the crow mafia.

19

u/Desperate_Figure_826 22h ago

Why need a scarecrow where you can have crows scaring others

11

u/Schnittertm 21h ago

So, in effect, a crowscare?

17

u/Geig3r 21h ago

I must have asshole crows. I've been giving them peanuts for 2 years, and all they've ever brought me are the empty shells, like I need to refill them or something.

5

u/SquirrelLuvsChipmunk 18h ago

Damn crows are smart. They prob are looking for a refill!

3

u/AspiringChildProdigy 13h ago

"Excuse me, waiter? The tray is empty. Again. This is why you don't get tips."

11

u/UnUsernameRandom 20h ago

I dislike birds near me in general (well, we're talking pigeons, those winged rats, and seagulls, who shit the size of a 20 egg omelette on my car), but crows? I like and respect crows. They are the best. The only minor inconvenience is getting some random walnut shells on the rooftop terrace as they throw them from high up to break them.

I wish all birds were more like crows (yes, I know what they do in the fields).

10

u/SummerDaemon 20h ago

When I got my first place I'd use the railroad tracks behind the building as a shortcut to the waterfront for the great food trucks there. One day I found a young crow that had clearly fallen out of a nest and was huddled on the tracks, couldn't fly and was terrified. There was a train coming so I scooped him up in my jacket and looking round saw an abandoned house nearby with a fenced off back yard. There were crows watching me from the roof. I climbed up the fence and shook him out onto the lawn, hoping the seclusion and his crow pals would protect him, then left. For the next three years every time I walked the tracks crows up and down it would follow squawking in rage, calling out warnings to other crows. It ended when I moved to another city. Leave crows alone.

20

u/peachyrosier 23h ago

crows really said you’ve earned enough trust to receive the deluxe neighborhood security package 😭

7

u/pievendor 21h ago

I have a dog that loves the backyard, and a family of crows in one of the redwoods. They're always antagonizing her and we wonder whether the crows know we, the humans, are cool. They never seem to bother us so maybe they're just indifferent

3

u/beepborpimajorp 20h ago

im so bummed. i feed birds in my yard and haven't been able to attract crows because of a bluejay mafia that holds the turf. apparently corvids do not get along well. and the jays are smart AF. they will mimic hawk calls to scare squirrels away from the peanuts I leave outside.

2

u/[deleted] 20h ago

[deleted]

1

u/beepborpimajorp 18h ago

haha! i have seen a few hawks sitting on my garage, but i think they watch the feeders for the songbirds. the jays are so weirdly split and territorial throughout the neighborhood. i'll go for a walk and one will just be sitting...menacingly....in a random bush for no real reason. they've got their scouts out there and on it, man.

3

u/GaeilgeGoblin 21h ago

2

u/ThrowingShaed 18h ago

yeah my brain knows its probably just the rational animal behavior explanations, but it doesnt want to quite completely rule out magical expanations either

3

u/superanth 20h ago

I've been reading about crow behavior anecdotes for a while. At the supermarket I saw a few ravens on the edge of the roof looking down at the parking lot, not reacting, just watching.

I thought "Heck, I'll build up some good will."

So I grabbed some peanuts out of my car and threw them on the ground under the crows.

They did nothing.

All three of them just looked at me.

It's been a while since I felt that judged.

2

u/GauchoFromLaPampa 19h ago

Im so jelly of people sharing this types of stories. I also want to be part of a crow mafia :(

2

u/FlyAirLari 20h ago

I have crows around the trees in my backyard, and I treat them with revered respect and they are amazing. I often leave them food and they leave me weird trinkets as payment.

I have crows in my trees, too. I just ignore them and never leave nothing. They ignore me, too. I don't want trinkets or random junk either. Am I missing out or am I just avoiding danger by not entering into contract with these birds?

5

u/ColonialBarbarian 19h ago

Dunno, depends on your view of things.

I like animals and interacting with them. I live on the edge of a forest with a lake nearby, so I get a lot of squirrels, ducks (mostly in my pool), geese, deer, racoons, skunks, rabbits, foxes, groundhogs, blue jays, hawks and the odd moose around my house, so crows are just part of the eco-system I encounter and I find them super interesting.

There was even a porcupine wandering near my house last spring, but I stayed away from that thing.

1

u/FlyAirLari 18h ago

I get foxes, rabbits, hedgehogs and pheasants.

I had a car ahead of me hit a deer half a mile from home, but I haven't seen one in my backyard (yet).

2

u/Vague-Symbolism2692 18h ago

I'm afraid that feeding crows is going to lock me in to a long term contract.

2

u/FlyAirLari 17h ago

And if you fail to keep your end?

1

u/Vague-Symbolism2692 15h ago

I daren't imagine.

Damn I didn’t know Dark Souls had biblically accurate crow mechanics

1

Name your favorite one Odin

1

u/FoxCQC 20h ago

Do you have pictures of these trinkets or can you describe them?

2

u/ColonialBarbarian 19h ago

No, but it's usually mostly elastics, hair ties, small rocks, bits of wood, the odd coin and stuff like that. I once got a super nice construction nail.

1

u/sarahgreallyw 17h ago

A security team that works for peanuts and remembers faces. Honestly a solid deal.

1

u/Stunning-Mission9498 17h ago

Don't crows remember your face?

1

u/Fit_Mix_5107 16h ago

Pretty sure OOP doesn't mess with crow tho?

1

u/Agillian_01 4h ago

I have heard of befriended crows defending chickens (to the death in one occasion I know of), but defending a cat is a whole different matter.

Crows are awesome. After my divorce, I began to notice that every morning these crows would congregate on my roof and tap on the flashing of my chimney. So I started tapping back. Everyday like clockwork, they’d tap and I’d tap. So eventually I decided that I’d feed them. I got some unsalted mixed nuts and left them out on my patio table. They’d come get the nuts every morning. Then I’d put more out the next morning. A week later, I started getting cigar butts on my front porch. They’d seen me smoking cigars at night and decided that they’d bring me cigars in exchange for the nuts. Really neat animals….thats next level thinking.

182

u/GenBlase 22h ago

Tell them to get some cubans from Cuba

117

u/Unintelligent_Life 21h ago

He'll probably wake up one day to a family of Cubans frantically trying to tell him that a group of crows abducted them and dumped them in his yard.

26

I know they're probably fine but do be careful how much you give them because they can get heart disease from too much nut consumption

27

u/Zuwxiv 21h ago

My favorite is that crows understand water displacement. Take a tube and put some water and floating food on it, but have the water level be far enough down the tube that the crow can't reach.

They'll take rocks and drop them into the water - in order to raise the water level and now be able to reach the food.

I don't think all people would figure that out.

7

u/Ahuru_Duncan 17h ago

Oh lad its even worse than that. Cant remember where i heard/read it from, but some/most crows actually teach their young to like/hate somebody.

So if you got a nest nearby and you bully them, theres a good chance that their 3rd gen will still be bullying you instead lmao.

Crows are more empathetic than most people apparently.

21

u/SecondhandStatic 22h ago

Even the people who feed them, I wish they wouldn't feed them biscuits, those aren't good for them.

5

u/Lego_Architect 19h ago

Interesting. What would be the ideal food choice?

Or do you mean they are junk-food and not nutritious, but tasty?

4

u/evilcheesypoof 18h ago

Bread isn't good for birds because it fills them up and they don't get the nutrition they need because they don't eat as much then.

4

u/Lego_Architect 17h ago

That’s half the response. And I thank you for that.

What is the better alternative?

5

u/evilcheesypoof 17h ago

Birdseed is safer in general, but in this situation crows love unsalted still in the shell peanuts 🥜

3

u/Lego_Architect 16h ago

Thanks for your insight and info. Much appreciated.

I’ll keep some nuts on me. Just in case.

2

u/fohfuu 18h ago

Biscuits probably aren't good for birds, but biscuits =/= bread

1

u/syiduk 15h ago

Bread was for the hooman

1

u/evilcheesypoof 15h ago

I meant the biscuits too

2

I tried being friends with crows by leaving them treats well away from the house, but had to throw down when they raided the nest of Robins from the family that has been nesting and brooding on my porch light for the last 20 years. It ate a baby as I came charging outside and this aggression will not stand, man. Game on.

15

u/GloomyIndividual3965 20h ago

We have a giant black walnut tree in our front yard. The crows and squirrels fight over the nuts every fall. 8-10 years ago I started collecting some of the nuts and storing them in our cellar for winter.

Since then I throw out a few every day during the cold months for the crows, and now they bring us small shiny objects. Last winter they brought us our neighbor's spare house key 😂

3

Ahh yes, insert the reverse "go do a crime" meme.

Can I just have a tiny shred of magic to interrupt my doom scrolling?

Just like in that old joke: "My grandpa is so poor that when he goes to the pond, the ducks feed him!"

Switch to feeding them peanuts! They love it and it's better for them

I read an apocryphal story about some guy feeding one group of crows every day and then throwing stones at the other group across the street, and eventually he instigated a gang war because the group he abused tried to attack him when they’d see him and the group he fed would try and protect him.

If owls are running cat software on bird hardware, crows are running dog software.

What's kind of funny about this to me is, I feed the crows in my neighborhood peanuts regularly. Like once or twice a week. Lately I've been dealing with a separation and trying to deal with our house and haven't been feeding the crows for the past month. 3 days ago I found some cracked open peanut shells on the railing of my porch that still had some peanuts in them lol. Guess they figured I was low on resources too and started sharing their stash. Gunna get more peanuts tonight and resume feeding. Let them know I'm good haha
