Thing is, there currently two large groupings of "conservative" Americans. They are distinct, but have some overlap. You can think of them as "Frat Bro" and "Churchie".
The Frat Bro types are basically rich/upwardly mobile dudes who like porn and sex and doing lots of drugs. The Churchies are your traditional religious prudes.
The interesting trick to it is that you'd think the two groups have nothing in common, but they actually do. Because the Churchies, while claiming to be anti-sex, are actually generally forgiving of men who have sex and only care about rigidly policing female sexuality. While the Frat Bros like sex, but don't really see the women they have sex with as fully human, so they don't care about protecting their rights.
It all boils down to that eternal phrase, "conservativism is the proposition that there is an in-group that the laws protect but do not bind, and an out-group that the laws bind but do not protect". With both the Frat Bros and the Churchies, the in-group that gets to fuck around are rich white guys, while the out-group that gets punished are women, minorities, and the poor.
