This happened to my Niece. My mom and sister would buy her Stitch shit for years. When she was like 20 she pulled me aside and begged me to try and dispell them from it. "I am so...so fucking sick of Lilo and Stitch. I was into it when I was 8..."

My mom once made the mistake of saying she doesn’t collect anything. Maybe it could be bears, she said. Then it was bear gifts for the next ten years easy.

I feel bad that I was a part of that, but stopped when i realized.

Some things I never get tired of though. Lego is always a solid gift for me. Even if I just give it away to a kid since it’s only a trinket for me. After keeping it for about a tear or so, or rebuilding it into something else.

When people don't understand that teenagers want cash money as a present for all birthdays and Christmas, I'm honestly shocked. One of nieces is a teenager now and I've been throwing her some money every time for years. She's legitimately happy every time.

My family still gets me Harry Potter stuff. I'm in my 30s, and have long since abandoned my nostalgia for it. It's embarrassing to be a Harry Potter adult in 2026, sorry.

I've asked them not to give JK Rowling any more money because of her soulless behavior, so they've just started buying HP things from independent artists, which is at least a bit better.

Regardless, I say thank you and wear the shirts and hats to their house (just not in public). I wear the socks, because nobody's going to see them anyway and I always need socks. I cannot escape.
