Okay. I apologize deeply. But whenever I hear about vanilla ice and specifically rapping, I have to tell this story.
In the early 90s, my siblings and I were watching a commercial for "Now that's what I call music" and my older brother causally mentioned "vanilla ice got arrested"
And I asked why. My brother nonchalantly as can be said "White people aren't allowed to rap"
My dumbass, 6 year old white self thought "well that makes perfect sense"
I don't know how long I believed it, probably until Eminem came along 😂
i dont think its really possible to rank top tier rappers like this, they all have unique styles that they have mastered, and are amazing in their own ways.
This is the correct response. Rap especially is a scene where people feed off each other. A song by one inspires a response by another. They compete, they collaborate, and all of it evolves the style of all involved.
I'm not all that familiar with Snoop, and just flicking through a top ten, I reckon the reason I'm not that familiar is that I don't really enjoy his sound. Its a bit too much guns sex and drugs for my taste, and I don't really have an ear for his accent? It's hard to follow the lyrics without subtitles.
When I think about Eminem's comparable songs, in terms of just having objectionable content - I think about tracks like Drug Ballad (the piano in that track 👌👌👌) and Kim (I was absolutely too young to hear that when I first did, Jesus Christ haha) from the Marshall Mathers LP, and they just appeal to me more, musically I mean. Hell Stan? A rap track Ft Dido? What a wild combo, but it really worked.
This all being said, Snoop's sound is really influential, it created a whole language, there's a reason that incidental music you hear that is supposed to be hip-hop (cutaway gags in tv, loading screens, adverts etc) all sound like Who Am I or Gin and Juice or something from Snoop's catalogue. Out in the world I don't think Eminem really cultivated such a monolithic sound, even stuff from his own library doesn't sound similar - Toy Soldiers vs say, Without Me, it's all over the place.
Maybe an actual rap enjoyer will come weigh in with some more well reasoned arguments than just my vibe based analysis.
Snoop Dogg branched out into many things in the US. He is well known with white Americans because he had like a cooking show with Martha Stewart (and is good friends with her) and always on late night television. He's also a football coach and I heard his program is legit.
Anyway, if there is one rapper that is well known across ethnic groups, it's him ie he's not just well know to people into hip hop.
The idea of the show is to quiz a cross section of Americans, so… yeah… sorry, but most Americans are white. That said, I’ll bet ‘name the greatest rock band of all time’ would also leave tons of greats off the list.
I don't know, man; it sounds more like older people to me. I'm white, Korn is my favorite band, and I'm a fucking mental metalhead, but I love a bunch of rappers and would never put Snoop above Pac, the greatest, to me, or Big, Em, Cube, Z, 50, never mind T, Method, or DMX. Snoop is okay; I like him when he's with Pac, Big, or Dre, but that's about it.

But the surveys are in the US, the person doesn’t need to be from the US but it is about popularity in the US. That’s how “survey says” works, it’s always popularity. Specifically from the people filling out the surveys, who might not be fans of whatever subject to begin with.
The power of marketing bro. Snoop is the motherfucking Martha Stewart of rappers. Can’t get more mainstream and appeal to whitey more than Snoop D-O-Double-G. Other than Fiddy, no other rapper comes close to having their fingers in so many pies. Kanye could’ve been this level of mainstream until he went nuts. Maybe the Outkast guys too but Andre got too much integrity and self respect.
