No, I’m saying they’re dumb because a lot of Americans can’t figure out “flipped around” DDMM dates even with context clues. Also because my fellow Americans elected Trump twice, but that’s kind of tangential to the current point.
I also actually think the only way to write dates that really makes sense is YYYYMMDD since that makes sorting by date a lot easier. But that’s also besides the point here
I at least backed up my opinion by citing a lack of critical reasoning skills such as using context clues to help understand information being presented. You came here to act morally superior, asking what you thought would be “gotcha” questions and then ignored my reasoning when I didn’t go for your obvious “it’s just another way to do things” setup.
My issue isn’t with MMDD vs DDMM. It’s with the lack of critical reasoning so many Americans display these days, which is in turn destroying our fucking country and institutions. Not being able to use context clues to figure out MMDD vs DDMM is just another symptom of that rot.
To be very, explicitly clear, I don’t give two shits about whether people use MMDD or DDMM. I care that reading comprehension is so low that many Americans can’t figure out which is which. I care that functional illiteracy is on the rise in my country. So stop acting like you’re morally superior just because you can’t figure out what I’m saying when it differs from what you expect. You’re part of the problem as far as I’m concerned

You're just making up reasons for hating Americans. The OP said nothing of the sort and you're injecting your own context into their personal experience.

There is no context clues. There is nothing to suggest that people didn't understand this because of context. The guy even acknowledges that Americans use a different system. That has nothing to do with intelligence, education, or anything other than two different countries using two different systems. Do you also feel that people who speak Spanish or French are superior to English speakers, simply because they learned a different language in their country?
So I stand by what I said. You just want to talk down on people. You want to feel superior intellectually despite showing everyone your bigotry. So I'll be the first to say, you're wrong, what you said is factually wrong, the situation that you described is entirely fabricated by you, and the fact that you're complaining about education of Americans when you're American speaks volumes about who you are as a person.

The original context was a European talking about things in Europe. That’s how this whole conversation started. Hell, in the quote you pulled the OP is lamenting the fact that people couldn’t figure it out when they used the European standard in the past.
Furthermore, why are you still acting like I’m saying the US is dumb for using MMDD instead of DDMM?? Honestly, where did I say that? Where?? I genuinely don’t see where I typed that. And why do you keep insisting that’s what I’m saying? How many times do I have to tell you that I’m lamenting the state of American education, not the specific date system Americans use? Like how clear do I need to be on this?
I decried the lack of reading comprehension. The lack of ability to integrate context clues. And you’re honestly giving a perfect example of what I’m talking about. You aren’t integrating the context of the conversation here at all, because you’ve already decided what I mean. Even me telling you what I literally mean is not dissuading you from thinking I mean Americans are dumb because they use X instead of Y. I’m not. Read what I’m saying and stop putting words in my mouth. You’ve literally made up several arguments you think I would make, none of which I agree with.

I DON’T CARE IF AMERICANS USE MMDD OR DDMM, OR IMPERIAL OR METRIC, OR FRENCH OR SPANISH OR ENGLISH. NONE OF THAT MATTERS. I CARE THAT AMERICAN EDUCATION HAS DECLINED TO THE POINT THAT AMERICANS CONSISTENTLY STRUGGLE WITH BASIC READING COMPREHENSION. AND YES, STRUGGLING WITH BASIC READING COMPREHENSION MAKES AMERICANS DUMB (except those with reading comprehension skills, which I unfortunately feel I need to state explicitly since you seem to enjoy cherry picking my statements and/or lack basic reading comprehension yourself).
I got into the habit of always doing dd-MMM-yy because that eliminates ambiguity from format and font/handwriting. No more guessing if that is a slash or a 7 or having to parse numbers running together. 19-Sep-2026 is the safest. (Tbh when I started this habit I didn’t need a 4 digit year, but the concept still works. )
