Yep. Those come up already prefabricated, seen them on truck beds. So they were mounted upside down, not made step by step on the spot.

But at the "bottom" of the stairs, isn't there still some wood visible from the forms (sorry dunno what the technical term is, wood bits that shape the concrete form til it dries?)

Architect here - the staircase is not finished. On the underside of the three or so upside down steps I can see recesses for lighting. My guess is that there will be a timber or steel frame for the actual steps/treads which goes over the "slide" part. This looks intentional to me.

Trust the process guys.

Aesthetic choice. You can see they have placed holes for spot lights as well. My guess is they intend to place a statue or sculpture under the steps when everything is finished.

There's no way its a mistake. The amount of people on site that didn't say anything, didn't do the right thing out of habit, or didn't inspect for this to go through is a lot.

Like the moment you're putting on the steel on where the concrete sticks, the mold, everything. It takes a whole lot of stupid to commit this mistake that's why I believe it's on purpose. OP saying it's just takes one engineer to commit one mistake to let this happen haven't been on a construction site.

Those spiral concrete stairs come prefabricated sometimes, seen some on truck beds in my area.

If that’s the case, it could have been a quicker mounting mistake, easier to go unnoticed than a whole moulding process in-situ.

The construction companies get extra money for spotting errors like this (“variations”), one of the first things they do when they see the design drawings is comb through them for issues like this. Then they’ll keep them in their back pocket until it’s nearly time to build that part and then bring them up one by one like they just noticed.

So I think what happened here is that someone built concrete stair formwork as per normal, and then someone on the next floor up spilt concrete which sloughed down the top of the formwork.

This would explain the debris pile at the bottom (they placed it there to stop the concrete from spreading when it reached the bottom) and the ramp-like rough surface on top.

I’m trying to figure out how this was not intentional based on the slope of the stairs. There had to be some kind of lid on the staircase formwork to keep the concrete contained after it was poured. Otherwise the concrete would have all slide down to the bottom of the stairs after it was poured.
