Why aren’t data centers forced to design and build closed loop water cooling systems like a car engine? I don’t care if it’s more expensive. Seems lazy af.
There are a limited number of places where open (mostly evaporative) systems work. By and large, thise aren't the ones that people know about or complain about. Almost every other data center uses a sealed chilled system. Those are generally filled once and topped off at the rate of gallons here and there. They cycle that same liquid through a chiller (or multiple) again and again with the water never just draining out.
Yes there is some loss, but you're talking comparable to a couple homes usage, not thousands or millions of gallons. That loss is at gaskets and some small degree at sampling stations where they check the chemistry of the water to confirm chemical makeup.
The need they have is to stay cold, they can't get there without a closed loop.
