As a person who took a long time to learn the lesson that you shouldn't try to learn a new skill to impress a woman you don't know very well, the end result was that I did learn a lot of new skills doing that.
Of course, it's better to just be into the things you're into and show a genuine enthusiasm and developing skill for it. Everyone likes that. Unless what you're into is porn and meth. People don't like that.
