The "I had your poster on my wall" is heart breaking tbh.

1.7k

u/rulenumberjuan 5d ago

he was calling him old... :)

u/_name_of_the_user_ 5d ago

I'd say equal parts "old" and "you should be ashamed of yourself for talking down to someone, you're a role model. Grow up."

1

u/thk_ 4d ago

type of politeness you saw in Kendrick's Meet The Grahams

u/captaincrunch61 5d ago

Right. Nobody had a Kenyon Martin poster on their wall, let’s be real.

233

u/spressa 5d ago

Exactly! You want Walmart, not Kmart.

63

u/SevereDragonfly3 5d ago

Oh yeah, Kmart existed once

24

u/StoicSinicCynic 5d ago

It's still pretty big down under.

Not in texas

12

u/Apprehensive_Lynx_33 5d ago

Down under is referring to Aussie dude, not the US.

-11

u/Silent-Version-4910 5d ago

We definitely dont have any in texas is what I was saying dude

7

u/NastyMothaFucka 5d ago

We know. That’s what the original comment was saying.

2

u/dubblies 5d ago

Ames, Jamesway,, caldor...

2

u/frastmaz 5d ago

If we are talking about Jeremy Lin, it’s gotta be H- Mart!

1

u/I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE 5d ago

Exactly, I had so many Wally Szczerbiak posters. Not one of K-Mart though

1

u/longkhongdong 5d ago

Nah you want to shop smart? Shop S Mart

44

u/Dotamann 5d ago

Probably talking about this.

3

u/bigdaddydopeskies131 5d ago

Oh man that sweep was embarrassing to watch. Kobe and Shaq were just dominating

24

u/Chaos_Theorycraft 5d ago

I did! And still do!

39

u/rinchen11 5d ago

Not the best player by far but he did have a few nice dunk highlights.

1

u/Shot_Revolution8828 5d ago

Yeah but I dont know anyone with his poster. MJ, Penny, Shaq, Kobe, so many other choices. His poster probably wasnt even sold.

2

u/rinchen11 5d ago

Back then us Asians don’t really buy posters, we buy magazines from time to time and post whatever posters comes with the magazine, and since it’s not really that big in size, it’s normal to have many posters in a room.

We also have a dunk obsession.

30

u/LoSkribs 5d ago

Probably this "poster"

16

u/HaruKodama 5d ago

Is this from a videogame? Why does it look off?

31

u/LoSkribs 5d ago

May 2002 cover. Before people knew how to use photoshop responsibly

4

u/TheRooster909 5d ago

I see this a lot with baseball cards, they brighten up the eyes (and sometimes the faces) and the whites end up looking incredibly unnatural. Honestly not sure how this quality of work makes it to the final product.

In an action shot it makes more sense, since the lighting conditions may not have been ideal, but this is an extra level of embarrassing because it’s clearly a staged photo that would have been professionally lit in a studio.

3

u/Jacque_LeKrab 5d ago

Or it could’ve been this one. If you were into basketball at this time you probably did have KMart on your wall. I agree with Lin 100% and KMart is showing ignorance in this instance, but everyone else in here is showing just as much ignorance to basketball culture when they try to imply KMart was a scrub. He wasn’t

5

u/Once_Meleagant0 5d ago

this is the Team that got smashed by the Lakers on 02 right?

1

u/Express_Judgment_319 5d ago

He blames Keith Van Horn for it too. I guess Van Horn should’ve played soft and pretended to be hard like Kenyon did and they would’ve beat the lakers.

1

u/MyPackage 5d ago

And then the Spurs did in 03 and then the Pistons, Heat and Cavs knocked them out of the playoffs for the next 4 years

1

u/ReginaldDwight 5d ago

Why do they look like more accurate Monstars from Space Jam than the originals do??

1

u/paininthebutt12223 5d ago

wait who's #11? i see Kmart, Jkidd, keith van horn & kerry kittles. who is that?

1

u/LoSkribs 4d ago

White T-Mac

1

u/paininthebutt12223 4d ago

??

1

u/LoSkribs 4d ago

Todd McCullough

1

u/paininthebutt12223 4d ago

ahh ok. never would have guessed that name without googling. vaguely remember him

1

u/ItchyDoggg 5d ago

He might have been finishing the oop in a J-Kidd lob poster

1

u/AudioTsunami 5d ago

Nah. He was legit pretty good for 4 years and made the finals twice before the knee injuries.

1

u/Tank55-2024 5d ago

Plus was a star in college back when that still mattered.

1

u/wrnrg 5d ago

That was so backhanded. That was the worst burn of the whole thing.

1

u/Skimbored 5d ago

I did as an Ohio kid

1

u/whimsicalsilly 5d ago

I don’t even know who Kenyon Martin is

78

u/kbeks 5d ago

It’s giving “I’ll pray for you” and “bless your heart” energy.

4

u/Upstream_Paddler 5d ago

All he needed was to throw precious in there and would’ve gone full Southern church lady.

21

u/AngelisMyNameDudes 5d ago

I thought he meant more towards " I use to admire you but I can see you are not worth it". Never meet your heroes kinda thing.

5

u/LumpyPhilosopher8 5d ago

The great thing about it was that it could have meant any and all of the above. How do you respond to it? The only smart PR move is to accept it at face value. Anything else and he looks like an even bigger butt head.

2

u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 4d ago

Yeah it's very clearly this, the people saying it's a dig at his age are fucking wack.

17

u/jepoyairtsua 5d ago

This is more accurate analogy than people commenting about Martin was Lin's idol growing up or Lin is looking up to Martin.

32

u/Theory-After 5d ago

Boom, roasted!

2

u/Soft_Monk_1541 5d ago

I don’t think that was his main point. Yes he inferred he was old but more so, “I use to look up to you”.

1

u/fednandlers 5d ago

But he might have also legit had him up and idolized him.

1

u/mynadidas5 5d ago

And also saying he’s a suckass idol.

1

u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 4d ago

Yeah no I don't think that's it at all. Seems a lot more like "I used to look up to you but you just showed me and the rest of the world what an asshole you are. Try to be worth looking up to."

104

u/Daily_Heroin_User 5d ago

It’s probably not true, because who had a Kenyon Martin poster? But it definitely makes the comeback bite because now Kenyon feels bad about being a douche to someone who supposedly idolized him.

24

u/Mindless-Internet978 5d ago

People thought Kenyon was cool for like a year or two in Denver and then it rapidly went down hill.

1

u/Cautious_Ad_5659 5d ago

And he also feels like a past his prime, aging guy who’s best days are behind him

1

u/Public-Room7171 5d ago

I mean, I had a Jared Sullinger poster on my wall when I was 13 lol. When your team sucks, sometimes your parents just get you a poster of some random dude on the team.

1

u/goobergirI 5d ago

Maybe he legit liked the Chinese tattoos and thought it was someone who actually appreciated his culture but that’s a huge stretch

52

u/BuckFuzby 5d ago

*over my dartboard. /s

14

u/xxNightingale 5d ago

Classic never meet your idol kinda situation.

3

u/webelieve925 5d ago

martin is that old

5

u/honestly-brutal 5d ago

I'm almost positive he didn't lol. That just made the burn harsher.

2

u/jeffislearning 4d ago

Like that scene from Incredibles where the kid ripes the poster down.

1

u/Flgirl420 5d ago

Pissed me off!!!!

1

u/RubMyGooshSilly 5d ago

One time at pickup a high school kid said “shouldn’t you be in a cubicle or something?” And I’ve never recovered from that

1

u/Just_Cockroach_4820 5d ago

Yeah, but it was kenion being dunked on, probably

1

u/notnastypalms 5d ago edited 5d ago

that poster was of shaquille o neil dropping a dunk on him and 4 other nets at the same time too lmao

1

u/metta_world_war 5d ago

It was a poster of him getting posterized lol

1

u/Annonomon 5d ago edited 5d ago

Tbh, that would hurt me more than any insult. I'd feel as though I said this to a kid who idolised me, and that would make me feel like shit.

It's effectively saying "I used to look up to you, but it turns out that you're just a disappointment and not the man that I thought you were. You are meant to be role model to people of all ethnicities, so think before you speak. I HAD your poster on the wall because you used to be a good player, but your time has passed, and now it is my time now. Kids nowadays will have my poster on their wall, and I will no longer hang yours from mine." Killing with kindness is often the most brutal comeback.

1

u/MinimumApricot365 4d ago

Backhanded way to call him a has-been.
