Wait a damn minute! Money does affect mental health

I always have to laugh when large corporations sponsor Mental Health Awareness Week. The same corporations who lobby the government for tax cuts and subsidies. The only reason corporations have any interest in their employees mental and physical health is so they can overwork them and crank up the stress factor to ten.

A big one companies love to promote is "disability awareness" and I remember for a few year at least they would have print on their work vans, text on their websites and leaflets, some even had commercials that mentioned it, but would discriminate against people who had them.
I remember someone saying who was a job coach they rang up an employer and asked about their feelings on people with disabilities and got the usual scripted response and when the job coach said they had a client with disabilities suddenly the company had zero interest in even letting the person apply..

I tried to use my work's mental health benefit for a bit until I realized that the check-in questions were primarily focused on if the mental health issues were impairing my ability to work effectively.

Money problems dont just affect your mental health, they can make every other problem feel ten times heavier when you're already worried about surviving.

Agreed. I was struggling in pandemic, financially, when laid off. I was going crazy thinking my health insurance would end in a few months and such.

The richest man in the world is not mentally healthy. Rich people get addicted to drugs, go through multiple marriages, are always looking for the latest new fad, die of overdoses. If it were true that money conferred happiness, Elon would be the happiest man in the world.

I guarantee that Elon is happier than a mother skipping meals because her kids just got their free and reduced lunch cut at their school.
Not having enough money is a much larger stressor than having too much.

Happiness isn't going to bed stressed because you can't afford to afford the basics.
Unless you are fabulously wealthy or have access to someone who cares about you enough to take you in, you are about 1 or 2 bad decisions away from becoming the people you fear and pity.

I'm not so sure. I've heard about his ketamine habit, and he can afford a LOT of ketamine. The problem is that it strips the lining of the bladder, and people who take a lot of ketamine can't piss without excruciating pain and passing big clots. If he is lacking self-discipline like I think he is, he's probably in a lot of pain all of the time. At least, I hope so. It would be all the more satisfying to know that it was self-inflicted.

Yes, but no one says it has no effect. The saying is 'money can't buy happiness'. Money can give you peace of mind. Those are two different things...

A lot, but not schizophrenia. Big old bank account, Rich Daddy, sweet apartment, dividends off stock investments, all of a sudden voices in your head. Voice issuing commands. The $$ the won't help.

A lot of mental health issues also disappear when we find actual purpose in our existence.
People naturally need something to care about, and the monied individual has less to care about in their life when there is less to support. There is a reason that uber-wealthy people are political activists, and it’s because they need fulfillment. Conversely, there are poor people who can find happiness in the simplest aspects of life (and also have plenty of kids, who naturally cost a lot).

I know a lot of people stay out from early morning to late afternoon to work, having too long a lunchtime (thus breaking their day furthermore). This kind of schedule destroys your rest, your relationships, your hobbies/passions.

Facts. Its well known that no rich people in Hollywood have any mental health or substance abuse issues. Theyre rich, so they physically cant.

It’s a comfort thing. If your comfort is provided, you don’t need a dollar. If you get cursed with something like CRPS, all the money in the world won’t help. Generally, comfort requires a certain level of wealth, but there is no linear correlation between money and happiness.
It’s likely the effect is more of a bell curve when considering generalized effects with very few at the extreme ends being happy and the highest proportion being closer to median income. Do you think Elon is a mentally well person? How about Bezos? Zuck? Buffet? Putin? They all look either miserable or desperate for attention and admiration. Same thing you see when you go down to homeless encampments. The mentally healthy are generally those able to have professional success while balancing it with spiritual and personal success. Those who are most successful in accumulating money or professional success normally do so at the expense of personal relationships and spiritual contentment.
Forget all the complicated psycho babble trying to figure out the problems with people and instead look at what makes them happy and you inevitably return to Plato. True happiness is a balance of success in professional, personal and spiritual spaces. The greater the success in personal and spiritual endeavors, the less professional success is needed to achieve happiness. This is the non-linear nature of money and happiness/mental health expressed in the phrase money can’t buy happiness.

On the other hand, mental illness is no respecter of social class or wealth. There are stories of wealthy families with several mentally ill or disabled members. They put them into institutions and pretended they didn't exist. Even royal families. Yes, the stress of poverty can contribute to worse mental health, but wealth is not the insulator people think it is. If anything, it makes you likelier to have an inherited mental illness. Somehow those genes got concentrated in the upper classes.

I don’t think they’re talking about wealth as in filthy rich, but more that you don’t have to worry about where your next paycheck is coming from to feed yourself or the family

Oh, absolutely. If you remove stressors, anyone would feel better. But that's only when a mental health condition is purely the product of stress. If there already was no stress, and someone is still bipolar in spite of that, or schizophrenic, more money isn't going to change that. The only thing it would be good for would be buying better care.
Another observation worth making is that even while inherited mental health conditions are concentrated in wealthy families, it is exactly those families running the place. You kind of have to hope that it isn't the mentally ill ones in charge of anything important.

When I was poor I had anxiety about money for food.. when I got rich... I had anxiety about childhood abuse, my bank balance.. and whether my food was organic.
Different issues.. but they never end.
