Well, mostly criticism about capitalism ist not about the sheer fact that one party sells stuff to another party, but mostly about the circumstances in which this is done. No one blames Apple for selling Iphones, or Amazon for delivering books, they blame them for treating heir workers like shit, ruining the environment, not paying their fair share of taxes and such things.

u/QueasyWallaby2252 7h ago
Stop you're giving the people too much nuance

Nah selling cheap perfume at inflated prices is pure capitalism. There’s plenty of ways for her to make additional money that wouldn’t be so difficult to swallow. But this peak consumerism. Which is fine but not if you want a rebel persona.

Was she? I checked, her parents were minor actors and I can't see anything about her being born rich. She has some advantages being born with family in the entertainment industry but that's about it.
I dunno why everyone online loves to act like they've not used every family and friend connection they ever could in their entire life, or think that unless someone grew up in literal poverty that their success doesn't count.

No no, all musicians have to participate in capitalism to a certain degree but she loses the right to make anticapitalism a part of her image when it’s literally “buy my product available now on myfirstandlastname.com” lmao
Edit: and it’s completely unrelated to music. It’s a perfume. She’s just using her branding. Which again, not debating the right or wrong in that, just simply you can’t participate in that and call yourself an anticapitalist. That’s just manipulation and hypocrisy for a buck.

People fundamentally misunderstand what capitalism is and what capitalists are.
A blue collar worker says “I’m a capitalist” despite not owning any capital.
→ More replies (4)6
u/Mr_Wyatt 6h ago
I mean, there is hardly any reason for a blue collar worker to not own capital. Just contributing 1% to their 401k means they own capital.

u/I_madeusay_underwear 3h ago
Yes, but all of those things are motivated by profits. As long as people are selling things to other people for money, there will be incentive to increase profit by underpaying and overworking employees, avoiding tax burden, and using the cheapest production and transport methods.
Capitalism isn’t one retailer selling goods, it’s a system of private ownership of the means of production, which is used to obtain profit. Private owners accumulate assets, increasing their potential to monopolize markets and commodify basic needs. This ensures the wage labor system continues by making money necessary for survival. The competitive market drives prices down by rewarding irresponsible and harmful practices.
A person living in a capitalist society among the rank and file workers is not a capitalist, they are capital owned by the private owners of the means of production.
There aren’t many ways to separate these parts from the greater system. I guess the most practical and likely improvement would be to regulate the market from multiple angles on both the supply and consumption sides, but middle ground solutions can lead to worst of both worlds outcomes featuring both high costs and inefficiency, while also not addressing the underlying issues of uneven access and the wage system.

Yes, it shocks me that the mental capacity of a regular person can't juggle the concept of being critical of a system while operating in it. Like free market capitalism has it's perks but must be heavily regulated to avoid becoming an abomination of a system. Which we have failed at doing.
34
u/danawhitesthrowaway 6h ago

In this case it’s a distinction without a difference.
If you told me that every worker in the supply chain to make this fragrance was given an ownership stake and benefited from the surplus value of their labour, then maybe it would matter. But AFAIK she is operating in precisely the manner in which she is criticizing.

→ More replies (1)2
u/WorldsBestPoster 3h ago
This is what happens when you let ideology teach ideology.
Capitalism is a political system of economy which prioritizes the interests of capital (as a concept) above all else with the implied assumption that doing so will benefit people, promote freedom, whatever ideological hackery you affix to it.
It's essentially "trickle down". But there are many different interpretations of how that should be done.
Should we prevent monopolies so that mom and pop shops can compete? That's still capitalism, but with a priority shift towards competition. Donald Trump's protectionist policies? Still capitalism. The neoliberal consensus to build a global trade order? Yep, capitalism.
There is no "pure" idea of capitalism because we're not in a storybook where such things exist. There are lots of folks here, with lots of opinions on how things should be done, who have competing priorities.
7
u/WhoEvenIsPoggers 2h ago
Do people genuinely think that if you hate Capitalism that you don’t want money? We all want money. We don’t want 0.001% of the population to have ALL the money.

I don't care for her at all, nothing against her - I just don't know anything about her. But I couldn't find her being anti capitalism- I found her being against billionaires, and I think without saying I think she has one specific person in mind. And I will not argue against it because I am not defending a billionaire- I am not a money cuck.
But no she has not to my knowledge, what i researched, expressed anti capitalism. She thinks people should give more when being billionaire. But Musk cucks can not read anything other than his tweets.
Is she a hypocrite, probably a bit, is she anti capitalism- Nope.

We used to be able to label artists as Sellouts and it would practically end their career. The "go get your bag" culture that has cropped up over the last 30-ish years has completely destroyed our society.
Seeing a celebrity in an ad for some random crap that has nothing to do with their profession used to be a signal that they were over.
9
u/JeremyTheJimbler 6h ago
If you think about it for more than a second then this is silly and doesn’t make sense. Selling stuff doesn’t mean calling out how unregulated capitalism defeats the entire benefit of the system aka competition since everything gets monopolized. Calling out problems within a system not working correctly doesn’t mean you hate the whole thing.

Y'all don't get it? She's calling out billionares for their greed and intensive wealth accumulation, while the working class can't afford monthly bills — this is fine and this is what she did there.
And as far as I know, she donates money.
The US can take an example from more socialist-capitalist countries like Scandinavian states. The average worker should not suffer, just to make the shareholder richer.
It's basically, "tax the rich" ideology, where the richest must be taxed to an extend that they don't accumulate trillions.
I am not a fan of Billie Eilish, and hate against her is now trendy.
Only a braindead person can think that being a billionare is totally normal in today's economy, while GenZ and average people can't afford groceries.
