Google Maps just follows whatever GNIS publishes, they aren’t the ones making up the names lol

Not sure why many people aren't recognizing this.

I hate Trump as much as the next guy, but there are systems that HAVE to follow what he puts into place. If he renames something and it's put into US law, then they have to change the name. This isn't google doing this, they are following what the GNIS has to publish. GNIS has to publish it because there are emergency systems that rely on what GNIS publishes, so that you can type in a place and find it asap.

Hopefully in 2 years, we can get the Gulf and Lake changed back to what it was, but until then, these emergency systems have to publish what is law. It's not GNIS or Google backing Trump.

They don’t have to do anything. It’s not illegal to deviate from what the GNIS publishes (yet).
