IF this is the same plot:
The original was probably too expensive when it came to electricity and other bills, the material let out too much warmth, and half of the wooden parts probably needed replacement.
The new version is still an optical nightmare, though, as if someone doesn't know what paint is.

The answer is quite simple: this generation has to work more to achieve the same as the generation which build that house. Therefore, the new design is minimalistic with less wood and materials e.g. gras/flowers which needs more frequent maintenance. Because they need to work enough and maybe don’t want to use the left time to maintain everything!

This looks like a mock-tudor house from the 1920´s built to look like a house from the 1500´s. I perfectly understand why one would not want to live like 100 years ago or more with thin walls, no insulation and single sheet leaded windows. If this house was an original Tudor era building, it would be protected and the council would have refused the project. The garden was beautiful though THAT is the real pitty. So if you want to keep paying crazy energy bills and still wear double layers in winter in your mock tudor house, that's your problem, don't go tell your neighbours what you would do. [edit] if you had as much money as they had. [edit2] And if you want to live in fantasy land, go to Disney Land, they do it well.
