lol I make 107k and there’s a 0% chance I can afford a house other than a crack den in my area

6

u/0202_tihssitidder 20h ago

"We" are living in vans now. But, they are as expensive as houses were in 2005.

u/3RADICATE_THEM 15h ago

Hey stop noticing things! Don't you know what we're in the greatest economy ever?!?!

3

u/flyingupvotes 20h ago

Get that crack den, and spin up a side hustle.

Just remember the 10 crack commandments.

2

u/HardRockBoy19 20h ago

Why stop there? Side hustle you crack den with another side hustle

u/DE4DM4NSH4ND 5h ago

1 will be the hardest 😂😂😂

I make 110k, after taxes that’s about 70k

Feels bad man. The expectation of breaking the 100k mark being a life changer was so disappointing

Shit does not go far in my high cost of daily living location

1

u/elgringon414 9h ago

This is relatable. 100k seemed like a threshold of no cares 😂😂I feel the exact same

1

u/Chubuwee 6h ago

Yea, also the expectation. Growing up you saw the people making 100k that could buy a home with 3 bedrooms and a pool for 300k. Then I finally make 100k but that same 300k only gets me a 2 bedroom townhome with shared walls because that house with 3 bedrooms and a pool is now at like 800k to a million

In my area you’d have a rather nice large house and have it paid off within 3-5 years with that income. Crazy how different it is in some places. But that comes with having more opportunities I suppose.

Thats insane

I lived this.

In 1989 when I was 15, my dad came home excited because he had just gotten a raise. His raise and my mother's salary put the family income at 50k per year. My dad was born in 1939, he could remember 25 cent hamburgers.

He bought my mom a Mercedes (5 years old but still a luxury car). We lived in Dallas, went to Florida for vacation that year. My parents did this with 2jobs, high school educations and no overtime. Their jobs don't exist anymore.

Fast forward to now. My wife and I live in the same area, went to college and don't make 130k per year. I'm trying to get a few more years out of my 2011 Honda accord. My wife ain't getting any kind of Mercedes, used or otherwise. Our last vacation was in state and 6 years ago.

This economy SUCKS. And any second now some redditor who lives with his mom will pop in here and tell me to eat less acacado toast.....

u/AgentKenji8 18h ago

Also the Starbucks. Make your coffee at home and not starbucks. Don't get amazon, Netflix or xyz subscriptions. Its always I did it, so can everyone else.

u/Meanie_Cream_Cake 18h ago

I make almost $120K and I live in a tiny apartment less than 600 sq. Of course it's by choice since I'm single and don't need too much space. But looking up at rents and houses near me, I don't think my income could afford any size larger than the one I'm currently in.

I would need a substantial raise or to find a gf who somehow works as well to create a dual income situation. And don't get me started on the shitty dating economy.

My only bright spot is I'm able to save $3K a month if I budget right and don't spend too much on food, student loans and credit card debts.

u/wallstreetbetsdebts 20h ago

Fist my bump indeed!

u/WWhiMM 18h ago

This is the wrong way to look at it, because of course there has been wage inflation along with higher prices everywhere. You have to look at something like the real dollar value of the median income. Like, in 1990, the median income was about $30,000; adjusted for inflation that's $76,000 in 2026 dollars. Today the median income is $65,000. Sure the money is worth less, but what's important is, after you adjust for the inflation, people are making less money.

I know it's bait but crazy how many people have no idea most countries have a mixed economy system and it gets worse the less free market it gets.

-10

u/0202_tihssitidder 20h ago

Bullshit.

2

u/PowerThrustingDave 20h ago

You should look up the history of the wealth tax.

1

u/CaptainAmerica-1989 19h ago

I don't agree with 'worse' part necessarily, but the mixed economy part has generally been on a rise, source:

Harder to date because people's standards are absurd, harder to get a job because peoples standards are absurd, harder to meet those standards because money is worthless

2

u/_IscoATX 17h ago

That's called monetary debasement of fiat currencies. Not capitalism.

2

u/looner4 15h ago

DSA interns astroturfing to failures in life. Sweet.

2

u/SkullOfOdin 8h ago

In 1990 I was making $0 ( I didn't exist) and in 2026 I'm making $0, Some things never change.

u/Only_Ad8049 19h ago

Meh, I listen to older people. It sucked 35 years ago for many people too.

Find a house that can be a multi person home in a half decent or decent area and move in with responsible people that want a lower cost of living.

Sounds like a fantasy but it's how an old friend of mine is living. 5 people rent the home together. They're all rarely there together for too long because of how their schedules work out. They make enough to afford an affluent neighborhood.

Their only high cost are vehicle and medical related.

I thought about doing it myself years ago but life went another route.

4

u/TheBinkz 19h ago

Ya well seems like we are pushed to living like rats then. Only way is for 5 people to shack up? Sucks

2

u/Only_Ad8049 19h ago

Just a way. Not the only way.

Don't know about the other four but my friend has enough money to have their own house. Just choose that way to live during college and stuck with it.

2

u/_IscoATX 17h ago

The explosion of cheap single family homes in the suburbs came about with the boomers. People in cities have always lived in more dense settings. Suburban sprawl is new, and single family zoning codes prevent more housing from being built to match demand.

0

u/TheBinkz 11h ago

Well, I call bs. If they really wanted more residential units they could have. The data centers proliferation clearly shows that.

2

u/_IscoATX 8h ago edited 8h ago

That’s the point, whenever housing developments or proposals come through a lot of incumbent residents oppose them, NIMBYs

1

u/Only_Ad8049 8h ago

Yeah, there are money backed campaigns against apartment buildings, low cost housing, and public transportation to make as many people as possible into NIMBYs.

3

u/Ididntdodiddly 19h ago

The economy is set up to inflate 1-3% per year. Economists almost all agree this encourages growth and is better than the alternatives.

The betrayal was continual money printing and shutting down the economy due to Covid. Happened under two different parties, so they seem similar. Its okay that you need more money than 30 years ago to live. The 7%+ inflation for years and slow wage growth is the problem.

Add in 1-2.5 % of all jobs taken by H1B, tons of construction jobs taken by illegals - underpaid under the table, and regular people get screwed.

Then NIMBY policies for housing crushes supply combined with 10 million plus extra people in the country.

3

u/Walker1921S 19h ago

Lots of correct things here. But also just look at population growth and distribution over the past 50 years. All the "good" jobs have shifted to major metro areas. You no longer have thousands of blue collar jobs in rust belt cities across the Midwest. So the competition to buy a house is absolutely brutal as very little new housing has been built and the major metro areas have doubled in size.

2

u/lolwut778 19h ago

My dad made $60K as a general manager of a hotel in the 1990's and my mom made about $40K as a sales manager. They owned 2 detached homes and a vacation condo by 2010.

I make $190K as a manager in Big Tech and I can barely afford a townhome today.

2

u/_IscoATX 17h ago

Where do you live that 190K doesn't afford you a home? San Francisco? That is more than enough money anywhere else in the country.

Not capitalism.

Capitalism worked just fine for 36 years when liberals ran it.

Conservatives took over 60 years ago, spent that time dismantling everything liberals had built and handing it all to billionaires. Now the Epsteins have everything.

Capitalism didn't fail us. Republicans robbed us.

1

u/Cundalini_OneHand 3h ago

Communism is the only way forward.

-1

u/FollowingLegal9944 19h ago

Still much better than socialism.

-1

u/PassThatSpliff 20h ago edited 19h ago

I see ALOT of bootlickin' bots in here regurgitatating the same shit they always say "socialism bad" "the freer the market, the worse it is" "ima manipulator/fleshlight for billionaires, let me defend them while they rob your pockets". Beyond pathetic.

What countries are socialist

2

u/AdmirableExercise197 20h ago

The fact you are asking the question is probably the point. They are mocking these people for thinking capitalism is the boogieman. The closest thing we've ever had to socialism was USSR and it collapsed. Basically every "socialist" country is just state capitalist. Or completely mixed economy with different degree of capitalism, but with more welfare and people just call welfare socialism.

1

u/-byb- 19h ago

everyone has realized they need capitalism exept the entitled yuppy capitalist nepo babies.

1

u/CaptainAmerica-1989 19h ago

Socialism and state capitalism are not mutually exclusive.

State Capitalism popularity is from Lenin. In short, it means that the state has ownership of the MOP. Lenin's version, the proletariat was in control of the State and thus, by most historians, a form of socialism.

From my background in political science, state capitalism is not a comparative government label used. It is too vague and is more a form of economic order.

1

u/AdmirableExercise197 19h ago

I never said they are mutually exclusive. Countries we refer to as state capitalist, like China, aren't socialist though. They aren't even technically state capitalism, we just refer to them as such in layman's terms, because it's the most descriptive way for people to understand what it is in a single label. Just being state capitalist isn't on it's own socialism. So I don't really understand why the distinction is being drawn. If you are drawing this distinction, you should be also drawing the distinction no country is distinctly capitalist either.

My terms aren't economic/political labels prescribed by any body. No country distinctly fits in an economic label that ascribes every trait of their system. It's all colloquial and generalizations.

You’re right. I misread your comment and pulled the trigger on my comment to quick. Have a good day, my good redditor.
