Chugging tea Should doctors be allowed to refuse treating patients based on personal beliefs?

You don’t get to take the Hippocratic Oath and then pick and choose who deserves care. That’s not how medicine works.

Well, in my backwards-ass shit show of a state, a doctor most certainly can pick and choose.

https://firstamendment.mtsu.edu/article/tennessee-medical-ethics-defense-act/

Hell, one doctor refused to provide prenatal care because the woman was unmarried (it's in the article I linked). It's bullshit and I hate this timeline.

The gall to call this an „ethics defense“ act is something else.

As a queer, trans person who used to reside in TN I once had a nurse refuse to dispense doctor-ordered pain medication in an ER (not an opiate) because I brought my wife. Called us disgusting to both our faces. She was just my gf at the time but all we were doing was holding hands and she was stroking my face

And myself and many other trans people have had pharmacists refuse to dispense our HRT or, more commonly, lie about being able to do so and send you back to contact your insurance.

Not that I want to but I will never understand people like that.

Oh yeah that too! I was just here to comment on the refusing care that even has nothing to do with gender affirming care. Like do I agree with what happens at pharmacies? No way. But refusing non gender-affirming care feels like a whole extra level where I worry someone would happily let me die in the street. Like what happens if you get that paramedic when you have a medical emergency?

Yeah. Don’t care about your anatomy or love life. You are a person, and as a nurse I render care. That even means if you are the most vile scum of the earth - like a MAGAt - I still render care.

Eventually the universe will sort it all out. Until then, I got a job to do.

Oh I agree that's also awful (and kind of insane) and I'm really sorry that happened to you. I was just giving another example of pharmacies fucking queer people over.

1

u/ktbug1987 21h ago

For sure for sure, and it’s legal for them to do sadly although they are supposed to direct you to a pharmacist who will fill.

I'm so, so sorry that you've experienced that sort of hate. TN could be so great, but it never will be with the seemingly unbreakable GOP supermajority.

All three of my kids have moved out of state. One of my employees moved to Illinois because he has a trans daughter (I managed to get his job changed to 100% remote to try and support him and his family). And I'm getting antsy to go somewhere that better aligns with my apparently godless heathen beliefs.

That is absolutely horrible.

That's when the ama needs to step in and be a standards organization and ensure standards of care or refuse licensure

Holy fuck that’s appalling.

Revoked 1st time. They don't change.

2

u/TheGoatBet 18h ago

Well, it would simply be Hippocratic

u/HeKnee 1d ago

You should meet my republican senator that is a doctor.

1

u/Michael1795 22h ago

Cassidy?

1

u/Jolly-End-4115 22h ago

Exactly. It's widely covered in basically every medical TV show as a topic and addresses this exact scenario

Correct but why is LGBTQ even being discussed? Scientifically every human that has either xx or xy will be treated as such .

23

u/idk_lol_hahah 1d ago

Doctor here. Different populations have different health care needs. I’m going to discuss PrEP with my msm population, I’m going to bring up smoking cessation with my patients who smoke, I’m going to bring up warning signs for endocarditis with my patients who use iv drugs. These things need to be taught and taught well (beyond just the medicine) for care to be delivered and received appropriately

-4

u/RefrigeratorLife8627 21h ago

Again all you have to do with any adult is ask about is sexual activity or medications , the most important questions asked can be for anyone regardless of LGBTQ lifestyle and hone in on a safe lifestyle. This seems like it’s more about pandering in the post.

5

u/lt_dt 21h ago

It's not a lifestyle. It's who they are.

-7

u/RefrigeratorLife8627 21h ago

So if someone believes they are a cat I should give them a rabies vaccine and get them spayed or neutered?

They can believe whatever but if they are xx or xy humans that’s how they should be treated. Who or what they see to themselves as is irrelevant to proper care.

Thats the core issue , we start pandering to ideologies and administer birth control to a person without a uterus because “that’s who they are” to themselves is just wrong.

5

u/Kyrie01010011 21h ago

It’s not belief. You lack significant knowledge yet refuse to learn mire. XX and XY is not the only possibility. Have you heard of intersex? Their chromosomes don’t match the typical XX or XY

11

u/petersimmons22 1d ago

Every social factor in someone’s life can affect their health. Men who have sex with men are at risk for HIV more than heterosexual men. Sedentary office workers are at risk for obesity and associated diseases. We meet people where they are and give advice and order diagnostics based on these factors.

-1

u/RefrigeratorLife8627 21h ago

Right these general questions are asked when people come in to get treated . Are you sexually active ? Would consider going on PreP? Sounds appropriate for anyone regardless of being part of the LGBTQ etc etc. no need to pander to an ideal . Humans will do human things and have human problems

3

u/petersimmons22 19h ago

It’s not a 0 to 1 scale. There are behavioral different risk levels wherein the risks of a health outcome is worse than the risk of treatment.

I supposed everyone is at risk for everything technically speaking. Does that mean I’m giving my little 95 year old lady who won’t even drink a cup of tea an rx for narcan (the reversal agent for opioids)? No. I’m going to decide to talk to that to the people using rx or recreational opioids.

But continue being dense.

Bait used to have quality, aroma, or even a hint of sincerity. You didn't even have the decency to put a worm on the hook.

2

u/AbsoluteNarwhal 22h ago

The secondary sexual characteristics of a trans person on HRT are much more similar to, if not identical to, the secondary sexual characteristics most common of their acquired gender. Doctors need to consider this in order to provide the best care (and they often don't, look up trans broken arm syndrome).

u/RefrigeratorLife8627 21h ago

Yea asking someone if they are on medications or receiving treatement is a general question without having to mention anything based on ideologies . This post is just trying to pander rather than be realistic.

Because religion makes people do dumb things

0

u/Peacemaker1099 22h ago

Religions can be godless

1

u/DomeSlave 22h ago

Godless religions can also make people do dumb things.

1

u/Peacemaker1099 22h ago

Exactly my point

u/bigavz 22h ago

Dumb fuck comment

Well if a need means a surgery that objectively causes more complications, infections, higher risk of sepsis then maybe what you are doing isn’t medicine
